1949 Buick Roadmaster series 70 Sedanet

This 1949 Buick Roadmaster series 70 Sedanet was recently recovered from a yard in Tucson, Arizona where it had sat for 30 years. Luckily- it was set on blocks to keep it off of the ground. As the tires deteriorated the blocks kept the occupant and trunk floors from touching the ground. The car is uncommonly rust free even for an Arizona car of it’s age. The floors, rockers, fenders, door jambs etc. are very solid, original and free of penetrating corrosion. The only obvious rust damage areas are a small hole ahead of the passenger’s door at mid body level, and a small area on the inside of the driver’s side rear fender at the leading edge of the fender skirt (see pics). The car looks to have had one re-paint in a non- original color. The green areas visible look to be the original Allendale Green paint, and the contrasting tan is part of a color change somewhere in the car’s past. The original paint is visible in the door, trunk and hood jambs.

There is no evidence of any major collision damage or repair although there are some minor dents and dings. The car is very complete and the bright work is all there. Some of the trim pieces are in need of straightening and the bumpers will need re-plated for a full restoration. But most of the major trim pieces are in excellent condition. Most of the glass has delaminated and the driver’s door glass is cracked. Interior is what is left of the original upholstery and will need to be redone- but all the interior trim is there- moldings, door handles, dash knobs and switches- and are in excellent condition.

Mechanically, the car is complete. It has the correct (and likely original) straight eight 320 cubic inch motor with Dynaflow transmission. For some reason, the valve cover was left off the motor ( and probably had been for decades) and the hood was left open- there was some water in the crankcase that may have been introduced externally. Condition of the motor is unknown and it has not been rotated. Due to the close proximity of the radiator to the balancer, it is not possible to put a breaker on the crankshaft w/o removing the radiator. And based on the water being found in the crankcase, I will advertise the car as needing a motor rebuild. All other mechanical s are that to be found on a vehicle that is 65 years old and has been sitting for 3 decades- but at least in a dry climate!

A brand new set of tires were put on to move the vehicle to Phoenix from Tucson. There are some extra pieces- hubcaps, additional wheels, a spot light and some miscellaneous items. The keys are missing.

If you have been searching for this particular Buick model for a restoration, hot rod build or a rat-rod build- this is an excellent choice. I cannot stress too strongly how solid and basically straight this car is. The money saved by not having to replace floors, rockers or sheet metal makes this car an exceptional value- not to mention the value of having original non-patched and non-repaired steel.

I invite and encourage any interested party to contact me for more pictures. I have over 100 pics of the undercarriage and will take pics of any particular area of interest on the vehicle. This is a great car but I don’t want to misrepresent it in any way- if you have a question, ask! J It is also available for inspection locally in Scottsdale, Arizona- please contact me to arrange an appointment to take a look at it.

As the vehicle is for sale locally, seller reserves the right to end the auction at any time.

Thanks for looking, and happy bidding!

Updated Buick LaCrosse, Regal to debut at New York Auto Show

Tue, 26 Feb 2013

Judging by the spy shots we saw last week for the 2014 Buick LaCrosse and 2014 Buick Regal, we knew it wouldn't be much longer until we saw both sedans receive a grand debut. Today, Buick confirmed to Autoblog both cars will be introduced at the New York Auto Show next month, but no further information has yet been released about either model.
Having been on the market for an extra couple years, the changes to the LaCrosse appear to be more significant than those coming for the Regal, but both will be getting refreshed exterior designs as well as updated interiors. The Regal's new face brings it more in line with the all-new Encore and the restyled Enclave, while the LaCrosse should get a more distinctive, upscale appearance.
Both cars will be introduced exactly a month from today, and we'll be there to bring you all the coverage.

GM recalls over 230,000 more Trailblazer-family SUVs over door electronics

Sun, 16 Jun 2013

Back in August, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall on the General Motors GMT360 SUVs (Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X) ranging from the 2005 to 2007 model years and the 2006 GMT370 SUVs (Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL) due to potential fires associated with the driver's door module. Initially limited to 250,000 units sold or registered in 20 Snow Belt states (and the District of Columbia), the recall has now been expanded to include an additional 193,000 of these SUVs in the US and, according to The Detroit News, 40,000 more sold outside the US, including Canada and Mexico.
Like the original recall, the issue is still a faulty driver's door module that can short out, which could lead to a fire. The Detroit News is reporting that, out of the 443,000 units being recalled, GM says that there were 58 fires that caused 11 minor injuries, and the expanded recall accounted for six fires and one injury. Despite the lower number of fires, the recall notice recommends that owners park their vehicles until the recall repairs has been performed.
On recalled units with functional modules, the repair consists of a protective coating being applied to the module, while vehicles with modules that are not working properly will have the driver's door module replaced. The official recall notice is posted below, and it includes contact information for customers of all five brands.

eBay Find Of The Day: 1946 Tucker Torpedo Prototype II hides a secret Riviera

Thu, 10 Jul 2014

The Tucker Torpedo is one of the great what-if stories of automotive history. Preston Tucker hoped to revolutionize the industry with a car unlike any other on the road at the time. However, due to a variety of problems, he only managed build 51 vehicles before closing shop. Over time, they have become highly sought-after; In 2012, one sold for $2.65 million at auction.
That brings us to this Tucker "replica" that you see above because it might be one of the ugliest monstrosities ever put together. However, we might extend some leniency to the creator, as the vehicle isn't actually trying to replicate the classic look of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. Instead, it is attempting to reproduce an earlier prototype from 1946 that actually features that weird, trident nose. According to the seller, his uncle built the car as a labor of love and supposedly used actual plans from Tucker as inspiration.
Underneath all of the crazy changes is a 1971 Buick Riviera powered by a 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) Buick V8. Some of the replica's odder modifications include the front fenders that turn with the wheels and the fin running down the back. All three headlights work, but the one in the middle is only for the high beams. Oddly, the small hinged sections on the roof are meant to open to avoid hitting your head when getting in or out. Maybe the seller's uncle was a very tall guy?
