SELLER REMARKS |
![]() |
You say you're tired of showing up in your early '60s Impala and seeing ten others at every show? Then how about this 1962 Buick LeSabre hardtop instead? Similar looks, Buick quality and comfort, and that incredible torque factory 401 under the hood. Isn't it time your hobby car grew up?
With just two owners from new, this is a pretty impressive car that has weathered the past five decades without a lot of trauma. Hailing from California, you know it's clean and it's had just one repaint about 25 years ago, so there's no arguing with the car it's received since then. The Desert Sand color looks as good here as it would anywhere else, and the timeless styling looks best with these subtle colors. The hardtop's shape should look familiar to Impala fans and with famous Buick portholes on the front fenders, this car commands respect at shows. Those creases and folds in the bodywork are laser sharp and it lines up the way only a good, original car can. Nice bumpers, just a few stainless accent pieces, and those cool body-colored headlight pods give it a very impressive overall look.
You'll see the Buick's big difference the moment you open the door, because there's a lot more space in there than you'd get from a smaller Impala. As far as we can tell, those are the original Fawn-colored striped seat covers, and they're in exemplary condition. The carpets were replaced not too long ago and they look quite correct, and the simple door panels are effective at creating an upscale look. There's a wide expanse of instrument panel highlighted with bright trim and a cool center stack that houses the original AM radio. The steering wheel is in good shape; those aren't cracks, that's how it was designed which makes for a very cool look from the driver's seat. It shows about 101,000 miles, and given the condition and preservation, we're pretty sure that's authentic. The massive trunk still carries its original mats, plus a full-sized spare up on its own little shelf that makes for plenty of cargo space.
Buick's 401 cubic inch "Nailhead" V8 is famous for one thing: massive torque. The muscular mill makes this luxury hardtop move like a muscle car and delivers the kind of effortless punch that you'd expect. The '410' referenced on the air cleaner is the torque rating, which was a Buick tradition for many years, as was the Buick Turquoise paint that seems to be in really good shape. Heck, this one's even still got its original generator in place! Power steering and brakes were probably mandatory upgrades when you're dealing with this much steel, and the Dynaflow automatic transmission delivers that seamless flow of power that is unlike any other car. A single exhaust system provides just a distant hum when you're cruising, and if you take a look underneath, you'll see those California-bred floors that still carry factory red oxide primer. 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps are fitted with 225/75/15 whitewall radials, so it has a factory look with more modern performance.
So if you're tired of always owning the same car as everyone else, or if you've just grown up a bit, perhaps this Buick is talking to you. Call today!

Last week, we discussed possible engine-swap recipients for the plentiful-in-every-junkyard Eaton-supercharged GM 3800 V6 engine. The Buicks, Oldsmobiles, and Pontiacs that came with that engine from the factory were reasonably cool, of course, but when you look at all the production cars that have been available with supercharging over the decades you can find some pretty amazing stuff. My personal favorite has to be the Paxton-blown Studebaker Larks of the early 1960s, partly because the Lark was just about the stodgiest-looking, sleepiest little sedan available in America, possibly the most ridiculous recipient of a howling force-fed V8 imaginable, and partly because of the name of the optional supercharged 289-cubic-inch V8 you could get in the Lark: Jet-Thrust! What do you say is the coolest factory-supercharged car of all time? Related Video: Auto News Buick Automotive History Performance Classics supercharger questions

Ever since Opel brought out the Cascada convertible last year, rumors have been flying that Buick would offer it Stateside – much like it does with the Insignia-based Regal and the Astra-based Verano. And now we might have our best clue yet as to what Buick might call it. According to GM Authority, General Motors has filed to use the name Velite on a new model. The name first appeared on a convertible concept unveiled over a decade ago at the 2004 New York Auto Show (pictured above), but GM reportedly opened an application to trademark the nameplate for production in 2011, seeking extensions on its application every six months since. Of course the fact that it's applied for its fifth extension (of a permissible six) doesn't necessarily mean that GM will ultimately bring the cabriolet to US showrooms, or that it will use the Velite name if it does, but the fact that GM is keeping the name alive could be a good sign. The market for relaxed four-seat convertibles has been shrinking, leaving it up to drop-top muscle cars like the Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang. But with entries like the Toyota Camry Solara, Volkswagen Eos and Chrysler 200 Convertible having dropped off the market, the Buick Velite (or Cascada, or whatever it's ultimately called) could have the sedate cabriolet segment all to itself – even if (or especially if) Lexus dealers aren't interested in touching it.

GM made headlines this week when CEO Mary Barra presented the company's electrification and automation plans at the Barclays Global Automotive Conference in New York. "We are committed to a future electric vehicle portfolio that will be profitable," Barra said, which could be taken as a jab at Tesla. In the presentation ( PDF here), though, we see a new vehicle in a slide titled "Leveraging existing BEV platform to expand in near term." The vehicle, seen above, accompanied the captions "New CUV entries" and "two entries by 2020." Is this a sneak preview of an upcoming electric crossover from GM? The image seems too realistic and intentional to be a random placeholder. If this is, indeed, an upcoming battery-electric CUV based on the Bolt, the question remains: Will it be a Chevy or a Buick? It has no visible badging, but it shares DNA from both brands. As Inside EVs points out, though, it does bear a resemblance to the Chevrolet FNR-X concept unveiled in Shanghai earlier this year. With two CUVs on the way, it's not unthinkable that there could be a version for each brand. In addition to this slide, the presentation includes plans for an "All new multi-brand, multi-segment platform" launching in 2021. The all-new modular battery system will cost less than $100 per kWh, providing higher energy density and faster charging. The platform will host at least nine different vehicles, including a compact crossover, seven-seat luxury SUV and a large commercial van. GM has said it will launch 20 new EVs by 2023, and that it targets 1 million EV sales per year by 2026. Many of those sales will be in China. Related Video:
