C. Budd Bayliff, was a huge Packard enthusiast who purchased the rights to the Packard name and trademarks in 1978 and soon introduced a line of Packard Custom Sedan and Coupe replicars based on late-model GM passenger cars at his 2100 Harding Highway shop in Lima, Ohio. His replicars ranged from simple cosmetic changes to elaborate body modifications such as new front and rear body structures with early-1930s style clamshell front fenders with side-mounts and a separate trunk. The front ends of some of Bayliff's modern Packards look remarkably like those found on the 1970 Stutzes and are often mistaken for them at car shows. A long-wheelbase Bayliff Packard was built for professional boxer Ernie Holmes in the early 1980s.prototype 1983 front-wheel-drive Miller-Meteor Eldorado built by Jack Hardesty. Another one of the hearses was a service car conversion of a Suburban for a funeral home in Lima while the third was a short wheelbase Cadillac hearse built for his brother in Spencerville, Ohio using a "theft recovery" purchased from an insurance company. In the mid 1980s, the Long & Folk funeral homes of Wapakoneta and St. Marys, Ohio, had worn out a pair of 1981 Superior combination coaches they had been using for non-emergency medical transfers and funeral service. The 1981 Superiors were among the last combination coaches offered by any professional car manufacturer and John Long of Long & Folk visited just about every coachbuilder in North America trying to find new ones. Coming from a family of funeral directors, Bud Bayliff was a natural choice to handle the commission, and his shop's close proximity to the Long & Folk funeral homes allowed for close collaboration between Long and Bayliff. Bayliff had recently helped finished Jack Hardesty's fwd Miller-Meteor prototype and offered to build a similar vehicle for the Longs. After consulting with his clients, Bayliff chose the Buick Riviera as a donor-vehicle because of its size, strong V8 engine and automatic leveling rear suspension. Because of the expense involved in building these cars and the fact that going from Cadillac to Buick chassis would have meant a step down in prestige, it was decided to convert the coaches to Bayliff Packards. In the conversion process, the cars would have lost their Buick Riviera identity at the rear anyway, and Bayliff was already building Packards from Rivieras, so the conversion was a natural. Construction began in 1986 and the first one was completed in 1987, the second in 1988. Even though they were complete a few years after their titles indicate, both cars are registered as 1985 Rivieras. The two Rivieras were cut, stretched 46 inches and converted into five-door pillared hardtop landaus. The rear side doors are Riviera coupe doors, while the front doors are re-skinned Cadillac Seville units. Roof construction is all steel. A pair of 1973 Superior Cadillac combination coaches were cannibalized for components such as rear loading doors, attendant jump seats and miscellaneous hardware. Long & Folk's distinctive Bayliff Packard funeral coaches were finished in black with black vinyl tops and gray vinyl interiors. Rear compartments feature dual attendant seats and individually reversible rollers. The division partition houses the rear air conditioner, spare tire and storage compartments. One of the many problems encountered in the project was the taillights. Originally outfitted with large, round taillights in the rear doors and auxiliary taillights mounted beneath the rear bumper, Long and Folkes eventually replaced them with units from a 1985 Cadillac Eldorado. Only two Bayliff Packard funeral coaches were constructed, however production of Bayliff's other Packards continued into the late 1980s. In 1992 C. Bud Bayliff sold the Packard name and trademark to Canadian millionaire Roy Gullickson for an estimated $50,000. By 1996 Gullickson had developed his own full-size model for a modern Packard, inspired by the 1941 Packard Clipper sedan. Over the next two years he and five engineers and technicians (plus a stylist from the original company) pounded out a handcrafted working prototype at a cost of $800,000. Although he claims to have orders for 70 cars, Gullickson has yet to raise the $10 million needed to build his first batch of 10 to 12 cars, priced at $160,000 apiece. GM's bid to rationalize Europe will impact the products that will be offered domestically.
It seems that Europe is defining the future of General Motors more so than its home North American market. Having axed Saturn, Pontiac and Hummer, GM has done a fairly good job of repositioning its remaining four divisions, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. Cadillac carries the luxury banner. Chevrolet is aimed at the masses with cars and trucks along with a nod to performance thanks to Camaro and Corvette. Buick bridges the premium gap between Chevy and Cadillac, while GMC offers a hardcore work/upscale proposition.
Wagons make a bit of a comeback, with new models, sales on the rise
Thu, Jan 10 2019Consider this an official invitation to hop on the wagon bandwagon. There's still tons of room because, well, it's a wagon (and market share is still extremely small). But according to new data, the segment is growing. According to a report from Bloomberg, using data from Edmunds.com, roughly 211,600 Americans purchased wagons in 2018. That is technically down from the 237,600 sold in 2017, but wagon sales in the U.S. are up 29 percent from where they were five years ago. It's also the third year in a row that wagon sales broke the 200,000 mark. The sales trends have been somewhat representative of the availability of wagons. New models have debuted during the past 5 years and therefore offer more opportunity at more brands to buy wagons. In addition to more modest cars such as the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen, several luxury and performance brands are offering wagons today, such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Volvo and Buick. (Bloomberg's headlines make the point that "crossovers are for the Kardashians," and wagons are just, well, classier.) This uptick in brand-name availability, as well as extremely well-executed design on most of the wagons currently available, has helped increase the segment's desirability. That, and its ability to better accomplish the same tasks at hand while standing out from the crossover and SUV crowd. Still, the posted numbers represent a small fraction of the total vehicles sold. According to the data, wagons only held a 1.4 percent market share in 2017, the segment's best recent year. Wagons hold a steadfast place in America's past, and they're writing an interesting new story. With the downturn in traditional cars, they may continue to create an unexpected narrative. 2018 Buick Regal GS First Drive Review | More power, style and doors
Wed, Mar 7 2018During our test-drive of the 2018 Regal GS, Buick took us to Atlanta Motorsports Park and hired stunt drivers to teach us mild-mannered journalists how to do a J-turn. It's an emergency maneuver, also known as a Rockford, in which the car reverses at full speed, spins 180 degrees and takes off in the exact opposite direction from where it was headed. It symbolized perfectly Buick's hopes for the Regal GS, its most ambitious attempt yet at a bona fide American sports sedan. Buick is trying to shake off decades of stigma as a maker of grandpa-spec wafters. Since 2008, it has been rebadging the Opel Insignia, developed by GM's German subsidiary and built in Russelsheim, as the Regal. In 2012, Buick revived the Regal GS badge, providing power from a 2.0-liter turbo four, initially at 270 horsepower but then detuned to 259 hp in 2014 as AWD was introduced. Buick had high hopes of challenging the luxury greats, and while the previous Regal GS received good reviews as a genuine sports sedan, it never really caught on in the marketplace. Buick took a risk by redefining the brand, but ultimately, it wasn't quite successful enough to be uttered in the same breath as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. The 2018 Regal GS doubles down on that lofty goal with a better-fleshed-out version of the outgoing car. It returns with improved styling and even more power, courtesy of a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 generating 310 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of torque. In other words, the new GS is up 40 horses, but down 13 lb-ft with an engine that comes straight from the GM parts bin. Within GM, it is known as the "High Feature" engine, used in everything from Cadillacs to V6 Camaros to the GMC Acadia. Autoblog has knocked this engine on refinement but generally praised its power, so it's a mixed bag. On the Regal GS, though, the drivetrain exhibited a marked improvement on the refinement front. Buick spokesperson Stuart Fowle attributed this to the new nine-speed automatic it's mated to, a quick and smooth-shifting transmission well-programmed to keep the engine at optimal revs. The result deviates quite a bit from the Opel Insignia, which maxes out with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four good for 197 horses and 300 lb-ft. With turbo 2.0-liter fours now the de facto entry-level engine for most luxury carmakers, having the 3.6-liter V6 makes the 2018 Regal GS more distinctive, a bit more American and less of a European copy-paste job than its predecessor.
