Bugatti teases mystery reveal on Facebook
Tue, 09 Apr 2013On the heels of the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport being stripped of its World's Fastest Car title by Guinness World Records comes this tease from the French automaker, hinting that it will soon "share the latest example of exceptional Bugatti performance" over the next few days its Facebook page.
The timing of the announcement is interesting. Even though the current Super Sport boasts a quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16 developing 1,200 horsepower that pushes the two-seater to an unrestricted top speed of 267 mph, today's competitors are knocking at kicking down Bugatti's door. The much lighter and more agile Hennessey Venom GT (twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8 rated at 1,244 horsepower) recently ran to nearly 266 mph - and it still hasn't fully stretched its legs. And then there is the Shelby SuperCars Ultimate Aero (twin-turbo 6.9-liter V8 rated at 1,300 horsepower) that will hit 256 mph.
So, we have to ask, what exactly will Bugatti reveal this week? Is this another variant of the Super Sport, sans its electronic limiter for a boosted top end? Is this the rumored 1,600 horsepower Super Veyron, which we first heard about many months ago? Or, will Bugatti finally be revealing a production version of its 16C Galibier sedan? Let us know what you think in our comments section, below.
Watch Top Gear host Chris Harris sample the Bugatti Chiron's unbelievable acceleration
Fri, Mar 17 2017Update: The original video and tweet have been removed from Twitter. Yes, yes, we all know how fast the new 1,500 horsepower Bugatti Chiron is. It'll do 0-60 mph in under 2.5 seconds, 0-100 mph in just 6.5, and the top speed is 261 mph (limited). As Top Gear host Chris Harris shows here, stats and figures don't really do the car justice. The Instagram clip from the "onlychirons" account shows Harris repeatedly accelerating to triple digit speeds followed by full panic stops. The sheer glee on his face really says it all. As many enthusiasts know, Harris is no stranger to high-performance machines. He's one of the few people in the world to drive the so-called holy trinity of supercars: the Ferrari LaFerrari, the Porsche 918, and the McLaren P1. The clip here was apparently taken during the filming for the latest series of Top Gear. Look for Harris and the Chiron on an new episode in the next few weeks. The very last Bugatti Veyron will be shown in Geneva
Sun, Feb 8 2015Inside of a lengthy interview with Auto, Motor und Sport that dealt mostly with future Bentley products, Bentley and Bugatti chief Wolfgang Durheimer said the 450th Bugatti Veyron will be at next month's Geneva Motor Show. That's a special number, seeing as it means the end of Veyron production after ten years, 300 coupes, and 150 open-air variants. Six weeks ago the Molsheim company had space for eight more Veyron commissions, but it's a good bet that all the stock down to this last car has been sold. Durheimer wouldn't say, but the hypothesis is that Veyron number 450 will be a Grand Sport Vitesse, the extra-go-fast targa with 1,183-horsepower erupting from its 16-cylinder engine. The boss also tempered expectations as to when the Veyron's successor will be shown, saying "it takes time to create a work of art" when asked if we'd see it in 2016. Durheimer did say that it would be "even better," which means it will probably travel even faster than the rumors around it, the last batch of hearsay bespeaking of something lighter than the Veyron, with 1,500 horsepower from a hybrid powertrain, and a top speed of 286 miles per hour. And that would be quite the start on the way to "even better," as well as too much of a burden for any tires currently available on Earth.
