Bugatti favoring Veyron replacement over Galibier sedan
Mon, 09 Sep 2013Following up on the Bugatti Veyron must be no easy feat. After all, how is anything supposed to go on stage after a groundbreaking supercar with sixteen cylinders, four turbochargers and as much as 1,200 horsepower?
Evidently, settling on a successor to the Veyron has been a daunting endeavor even for Bugatti, which has, over the past few years, been reported to be considering either a new hypercar to fill the Veyron's shoes, a super-sedan to chart a different course, or possibly both. But now the storied Alsatian marque is said to have finally taken the Galibier off the table.
This according to our old friend Jonny Lieberman over at Motor Trend, who spoke with Wolfgang Schreiber - the engineer behind the Veyron and Bugatti's current chief executive. Apparently, MT reports, there just isn't a market for a super-luxe performance sedan above the Rolls-Royce Phantom or the Mulsanne offered by Bugatti's sister brand Bentley. Which is a bit of a shame, but where does that leave Bugatti as production winds down on the Veyron in all its many iterations?
Will Bugatti's Veyron successor be too fast to test?
Thu, 07 Aug 2014As one of the fastest cars in the world, the Bugatti Veyron is an icon in its own time, but people are fickle and always want to know what's next. Bugatti needs to sell just 15 more examples before the Veyron reaches its 450-car cap. With the end finally in sight, a blindly fast successor may be streaking towards us on the horizon.
It's rumored to be packing 1,479 horsepower (1,500 PS) from a modified, hybrid version of the current 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16
Autocar claims that it's in touch with unnamed insiders within Bugatti, and the site is making some very big promises about the future hyper car. First, what we all want to know: the car is rumored to be packing 1,479 horsepower (1,500 PS) from a modified, hybrid version of the current 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16 with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. According to the sources, the upgrades potentially include direct injection and electrically powered turbos (maybe like the forthcoming Audi SQ7), but it seems certain that an additional electric motor is being added, as well. That matches previous rumors and dovetails nicely with the suspicious-looking Veyrons spotted lapping the Nürburgring with wider bodies and weird contraptions on their backs.
Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition visits the Mullin Museum
Fri, 20 Jul 2012The last time we visited the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, CA, it was to see the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, which was the world's most expensive car at the time with an estimated purchase price of $30-$40 million. Nearly two years later we found ourselves back in the museum, this time to view the world's fastest car - the 2011 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition.
Bugatti will build 300 of the Veyron 16.4 supercars by the time they are finished with production. Of those, 46 will be of the Super Sport variant boasting an incredible 1,200 horsepower, and of those just five will be World Record Editions that celebrate the car's record-breaking 268-mph top-speed run. The car you see here is one of those select few and is on loan to the museum for a short period of time. It features the same two-tone paint scheme featured on the car used to set the top speed at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessian high-speed oval.
The Veyron 16.4 Super Sport WRE is one of many modern Bugattis currently on display in the museum, joining a Veyron 16.4 Super Sport prototype and show cars from the late 1990s including the 18.3 Chiron Concept, EB118 Concept and EB218 Concept. A rare Bugatti EB110 SS is also on display.
