Carsten Pries, the division's head of product management, wants to focus on at least six cylinders and rear-wheel drive for as long as possible. Pries sees the combination of six (or more) cylinders and rear-wheel drive as defining features of the division. "These are cars that attract new people to the M brand and that is very important," he said to Motoring. He doesn't think it's time to deviate from that strategy yet. "I hope not, because six is part of our DNA. Not only the power, but that hallmark sound that we have." We certainly like Pries' sentiment, but the division's current lineup shows a willingness to compromise the purely rear-wheel drive focus when necessary. For example, the latest X5 M and X6 M already feature all-wheel drive systems, which can send 100 percent of the power to the back at times. Spy shots and rumors heavily suggest a similar option for the next-generation M5, too. The latest M4 GTS proves BMW knows how to tune a fantastic sounding six-cylinder, but there's no reason a well engineered four-cylinder model couldn't be great. The original M3 relied on one to speed around, and it became a performance icon of its period. Pries even admitted in 2014 that a new four-cylinder M vehicle could happen eventually. For now, he isn't ready to introduce a new four-pot model. Pries admits that the division's strategy might need to change someday, but he still expects to create M-badged models. "If the framework changes in the future, we have to look then at what we can do in terms of a proper or decent M offer," he said to Motoring. Related Video: BMW will make plug-in hybrid versions of all modelsThu, Apr 2 2015Late last year, BMW made it clear that it would be making plug-in hybrid versions of all of its "core models." The first of those will be the X5 xDrive40e. At the New York Auto Show this week, BMW North America CEO Ludwig Willisch told AutoblogGreen that this enhanced PHEV plan is going to be applied to "every new model." We were asking Willisch if he views Tesla as a competitor to the Bavarian automaker. "I wouldn't say I don't see any competition," Willisch said, "but I still see that a BMW 5 Series and a Tesla are totally different animals." What about the rumored i5 or an i7, we started to ask – "which we don't have" Willisch interrupted – that could happen, couldn't it? "Not any time soon," Willisch said. "What we will have are plug-in hybrids. With the introduction of every new model there will be a plug-in hybrid version of that, too." There are people who are asking if the i brand will expand to a truck or a larger sedan, "but this is all the future," Willisch said. "It's not now and it's not the next couple years." Related Video: 1971 BMW 2002 is a car designer's carWed, Sep 30 2015Choosing what car to buy, drive, and love is a difficult decision for anyone. But when you're a car designer, the decision carries that much more weight. Then again, it may be that much easier when your whole decision comes down to the visceral and the aesthetic. Take Radu Muntean, for example, who's profiled in this episode of Petrolicious. Not to be confused with the film director of the same name (and nationality), this Radu Muntean is a car designer by trade. Since moving from his native Romania and graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Radu went on to work for the likes of Ford, GM, and Tesla. But his pride and joy is a set of wheels he didn't design himself: it's a 1971 BMW 2002. It's a model that BMW made for the long stretch of time in the 1960s and '70s, and enjoys a cult following to this day. And it's not hard to see why. Radu has customized his vintage Bimmer extensively, but rather than glitzing it up, he's boiled it down to its essence. And like a Lancia Fulvia or Alfa Romeo Giulia of the same era, this 2002 is a thing of simple beauty: squared-off design, slap sides, tall greenhouse, and little more.
