The engine also features variable valve timing, variable intake lifts and a dual exhaust system. The Dynamic Driving Control system is standard, with which the driver can change the behavior of a number of controls, including the throttle, transmission and steering feel. Active Roll Stabilization, which aids in flat cornering, is also standard and vehicle speed-sensitive steering is also standard. An Active Steering system, which varies the steering ratio according to speed and other conditions, is optional.Big 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes are standard, along with 19-inch run-flat tires. An optional Sport Package brings 19-inch wheels with performance tires in staggered sizes, front to back, for improved performance. There are also some innovative lighting features; xenon adaptive headlamps swivel slightly to the side to help illuminate into corners, and adaptive brake lights shine brighter during hard braking. For front passengers, the experience is high-tech and luxurious. Option packages include the Cold Weather Package (heated steering wheel and front seats), the BMW Individual Composition Package (exterior and interior touches), the Premium Sound Package (eleven speakers) and the Sport Package (19-inch wheels, run-flat rear tires, chrome exhaust pipe and other sporty options).Individual options available for all M6 include keyless start, heated front seats, heads-up display, Active Steering Cruise Control with distance sensors, high beam assistant, lane departure warning system, night vision system and a variety of metallic paints, woods trims and other luxurious accents. At the top of the range are the high-performance M6 models, each offering a 5.0L V10 engine and 7-speed sequential manual gearbox (SMG), with 500 horsepower at 7700 rpm and 383 pounds-feet of torque at 6100 rpm. BMW claims a 0-60 time of only 4.5 seconds, though the major magazines have clocked it even faster. The M6 is available in both coupe and convertible variants, and loaded with equipment to make it track-ready, such as a G-sensitive lubrication system, a variable differential lock, a specially designed suspension, a performance-calibrated version of the DSC stability system, an Electronic Damping Control (EDC) system that allows customizable settings and a twin-chamber exhaust system that allows two different sound characteristics.

Weekly Recap: Ferrari plans to gradually increase production by 2019
Sat, Oct 17 2015Ferrari has long been known for the exclusivity of its performance machines. It's on a different level than Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. But as it transitions to a new era of independence from Fiat Chrysler, Ferrari is going to get a little less exclusive. It's by design, and it means a subtle, slow ramp-up of production – a move Ferrari believes will ensure its future by meeting growing demand in new markets. The strategy was detailed in SEC documents filed this month as part of the company's pending stock offering. The files reveal Ferrari will gradually increase shipments to about 9,000 units per year by 2019. This is a reversal of Ferrari's 2013 plans to cap production at 7,000 cars annually, which it hit on the nose that year. Ferrari shipments inched up to 7,255 in 2014, though that's down from 2012's record tally of 7,405. Ferrari is a vastly different operation than it was in 2013. Longtime chairman Luca di Montezemolo stepped down last fall, and FCA chief executive Sergio Marchionne has been overseeing the company since then. Its IPO has attracted high levels of attention from enthusiasts and investors. As expected, demand has reportedly outstripped the availability of the stock, which has an estimated offering price of $48 to $52 a share. Speaking of more Ferraris, the company revealed a limited-edition model this week called the F12tdf (shown above). Based on the F12 Berlinetta, the car is a salute to the Tour de France endurance auto race that Ferrari dominated in the 1950s and '60s. The V12 engine's output increases to 769 horsepower, while weight is cut by 243 pounds – allowing for a sprint to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Dramatic carbon-fiber elements and a radical redesign of the body panels give the F12 a more dramatic look. It will be limited to 799 units over the life of the car. If this is how Ferrari is increasing production, we're more than okay with the company's new strategy. OTHER NEWS & NOTES Tesla software unlocks Autopilot features Tesla released the latest version of its software for the Model S this week, which allows the all-electric sedan to drive in a semi-autonomous state called Autopilot. Tesla Version 7.0 enables the Model S to maintain lane position, change lanes by touching the turn signal, and manage the car's speed using an advanced, traffic-sensing cruise control. It also has a parallel parking feature, which searches for open spots and then parks your Tesla.
2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
Fri, 06 Jun 2014It's hard to say what a coupe is anymore. Is it merely a car with two doors? Does it have to have an arching roofline? Do frameless windows count for anything? Can a five-door hatchback or even an SUV be a coupe? At some point in the last few years, nearly everything we thought made a coupe a coupe has been challenged by something that calls itself a coupe, but to most people isn't. Our friends at BMW have led most of this line of questioning.
The new 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is one of the latest Bimmers to challenge the moniker (which also challenges the idea of "Gran," for that matter), and unlike some of its other "coupe" variations - we're looking at you, X6 - this one is a pretty one. The 4 Series Gran Coupe is essentially a four-door version of the 4 Series, which is itself a two-door version of the 3 Series. Huh? Wouldn't that simply make it another 3 Series? Of course, but this one is prettier, as it uses the 4's sexier body styling, with its lower nose, wider-looking stance and edgier lighting graphics. It is also technically a five-door hatchback, not a sedan per se, and it utilizes frameless side door glass, which apparently does count for something in BMW coupe-land. Significantly, the 4 Gran Coupe's wheelbase is identical to the two-door; if it was longer - as is the case with the 3 Series and 5 Series hatchbacks - that might make it a "Gran Turismo." Confused yet?
We recently got our first chance to drive the 4 Series Gran Coupe at a press launch in Spain, and while the only version we were given was a rear-drive 428i Gran Coupe with the M Sport contents, the harrowing roads around Bilbao gave us a good idea of what this car is all about from a driving dynamics standpoint.
