Greetings folks,

Up for grabs is a well maintained rust free example of a beauful classic. Of the 1200 or so imported, roughly 500 are known to be in good shape. This has been a 2 owner car and has been religiously serviced by both of us. The first owner was an elderly gentleman who had it till he could no longer drive it. Garaged most of its life.

This car has been maintained to preserve its originality. I have most maintenance records since birth till its most recent service. The elderly original owner was an enthusiast, trading in his 1983 533i for this M5 in November 1988 for $48.9k. I have copies of the original bill of sale and all books.

My first intro to M-powered BMWs was an e30 M3 that I purchased 15 years ago. Since then, the addiction has worsened. I get goose bumps everytime I get in this car. It is a very special M car and I am reminded of that everytime I step in it. Recent acquisition of an e39 M5 and an old Land Cruiser has prompted the sale. If it were up to me, I would have found storage for it, and preserved it for my daughter, who loves my "stick shift M5s that mommy can't drive". But my wife doesn't feel that having 6 cars is reasonable, and i can't exactly blame her...

During my ownership, I have done an exhaustive renewal of the front and rear suspension, fixed small oil leaks, did an overhaul of the AC system and an exterior and interior refreshening as outlined below to make it a daily driver. The end result is a car that looks as good as it drives and gets comliments everywhere. I drive it twice a week to work. It is not a perfect or concours car, but a car you can stare at everyday in admiration and drive it whenever you please.

MECHANICAL: The S38B35 powerplant is an amazing beast. Much more refined compared to the e30 m3.

- It has great power throughout the powerband and shifts are smooth through all the gears. Recently treated to a full tune up.

- The clutch feels great.

- Tracked down and fixed all oil leaks

- The suspension has been completely revamped by me. I went the route of New OEM M-Tech springs and Bilsteins shocks, a costly but worthwhile change, opting for the SLS delete. The car tracks amazingly well. Cost just under $2k for parts and labor.

- New front and rear strut mounts.

- New Pitman arms

- New tie rod ends and ball joints.

- Spent almost $1500 on a new AC compressor, dryer, condensor etc... It now has cold AC. Heat works too

- New power steering pump and power steering hose

As it was owned by an elderly gentleman, it went through periods of time where it was stored while he battled chronic disease and cancer. In 2005, after sitting for a while, it underwent a comprehensive top to bottom service to the tune of $11k at BMW, where they had it for nearly 4 months.  List of services include but not limited to  -

- Front and rear shock absorbers

- Front brake pads and rotors

- Rear brake pads and rotors

- 4 new tires

- 4 wheel alignment
- Driveshaft flex disc replaced
- Brake Master Cylinder replaced
- Brake fluid flush
- Antifreeze/coolant flush
- Cooling system hoses
- Electrical system serviced
- Door weatherstrips replaced
- AC service
- Transmission service
- Drive belts
- Fuel filter
- Oil and filter
- Spark plugs. cap/rotor
- Valve cover gaskets and valve job

- The speedometer cluster was replaced at this time by BMW in 2005 at 53.5k miles (paperwork included) due to an erratic speedo and the new cluster set to 0. Present odometer reading is 54.7k miles, so total miles are approx 108k. Service records from the 90s to now document and chronicle mileage.

In 2011 at 106k miles (52k on new odo), it underwent another major service to tune of about $3500 including

- Front and rear brakes
- Brake fluid flushed
- Transmission service
- Cooling system flushed
- Drive belts
- Full tune-up
- AC service with Blower motor
- Alternator

The car wasn't driven much since then as the previous owner passed away in 2012.

EXTERIOR: The Black paint has a great shine to it.

- I had it professionally wet sanded and polished and it gets compliments everywhere. Also had paintless dent removal remove small door dings.

- One of the few rust free examples around. No floods.

- 16" factory basket weaves are paired with Matching Conti Sports with approximately 90% tread life left.

- Many years ago, the hood and left fender were replaced from a fender bender. Paint match is great to this day. Rest of the body panels are original.

- The front bumper has a small rip in it at the bottom from being low.

INTERIOR: The original natural tan interior has survived the test of time.

- The seats are original and have no tears. Bolsters are in great shape. All power seat functions work, except the head rest mechanism.- Heated seats work!

- Headiner is great shape.

- The radio is original and works as intended; the speakers work fine, but not audiophile quality.

- The power antenna is functional.

- Many rubber componts have been replaced throughout the years, along with switches.

- Replacement black BMW mats, with the originals included.

- The original dash has one tiny visible crack and 2 smaller ones by the windshield that can't be seen from the inside.

In summary, given the rarity and condition of the car, this car will continue to appreciate in value. This is a solid daily driver, but it is not concours. These cars are getting rarer in good shape. Be realistic in your expectations and you will not be disappointed. These young classics, including the e30 M3 and M6 are appreciating and the e28 M5 is following that lead. I sold my pristine e30 m3 10 years ago for $10k and it is a $25k car today.

A very reputable seller of M powered cars recently sold one with 75k miles for around the $30k mark.

I reserve the right to end the auction early for a favorable offer. Feel free to contact me with questions at 504 957-9636. Thanks for your interest.

This Alpina C1 is a rare bit of BMW 3 Series history

Mon, May 9 2016

Over its five decades in the business, German tuner-turned-automaker Alpina has established a long history of taking great BMWs and making them just a bit tastier, more luxurious, and well... faster. Of course, they haven't always been the land rockets of modern day, however that's not to say they were exactly tame. Back in the early 1980s, this was one of the cars to have—an Alpina C1 2.3. Based on the original E21 BMW 3-series, the C1 2.3 bridged the performance gap between the standard BMW 323i and Alpina's hard-charging B6 2.8. It summoned up a heady 170 horsepower and disposed of the 60 mph sprint in just seven and a half seconds. Not shabby at all. 33 years later, this '83 Alpina C1 is back up for sale , and it's still quite the head-turner. RELATED: Check Out the Hard-Charging 2016 Alpina B6 xDrive A look back at the C1's contemporary relatives show just how wide Alpina's performance gap had been. Introduced in 1977, the BMW 323i offered up 141 horsepower courtesy of BMW's famed M20 straight-six engine, a big performance improvement over the E21's previous four-cylinders. The Alpina B6 2.8 3-series on the other hand, introduced in 1978, blew its doors off thanks to the bigger 2.8-liter straight-six plucked from the BMW 528i, offering up 200 horsepower. All that, in an early 3-series. With that in mind, a middle-of-the-pack car made sense, so Alpina treated the 323i's straight-six to some of the B6 2.8's goodies, minus the former's Bosch fuel-injection system. Bilstein shocks were part of the diet too, along with oversized disc brakes, sleek alloy wheels, as well as the tell-tale Alpina front splitter, rear spoiler, and racy side-stripes. RELATED: The BMW Isetta is Coming Back, But as an Electric Vehicle! Inside, Alpina added a dose of luxury as well. One could order their C1 2.3 with the gorgeous optional Recaro seats with Alpina stripes, as well as a bespoke leather steering wheel, gear knob, and speedometer. Top speed? About 130 mph. Compared to regular E21 BMW 3-series cars, these are quite rare. How rare is a point of debate, however. Production estimates range from as few as 35 to as many as 400, depending on the source. Regardless, you certainly don't see them everyday, and if this one fits your fancy... it lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Related Video: This article originally appeared on Boldride.com. Best electric sedans of 2024

Wed, Jan 31 2024

While the American automotive trends tend to lean toward SUVs and trucks, and sedans seem to be dying out, there are some great four-doors out there in the EV market. They may not have the bulk, the high vantage point, or the storage capacity of the utes, but some folks still want a car that’s, well, a car. A sedan might not always have as much room to cram in a big battery pack, either, but they also donÂ’t weigh as much. They tend to be more lithe, sexy and agile. And theyÂ’re generally cheaper than their bigger brethren, too, though some of the full-size luxury sedans can still get well into six-figure pricing. If thatÂ’s not your thing, you can check out the best electric SUVs, but if youÂ’ve read this far, you probably enjoy sedans as much as us. WeÂ’ve tested quite a few, and these are the best electric sedans of 2024.   Best electric sedans below $60,000 Tesla Model 3 — $40,380 The Tesla Model 3 is one of just two sedans (along with the Hyundai Ioniq 6) to make it onto our list of best EVs under $50,000. ItÂ’s quite the value, too, with a starting price of just $40,380. ItÂ’s also fun to drive. Yes, it has some quirks, including too many vehicle functions residing exclusively in infotainment menus, but the Model 3's idiosyncrasies are easy to forgive based on its price and range, and they're things you can quickly get used to or possibly even appreciate. No wonder this EV is so popular.   Hyundai Ioniq 6 — $43,565 Of the sedans on this list, the Ioniq 6 is one of the most affordable (starting at $43,565), and one of the best. ItÂ’s quite efficient, with long driving range — up to 361 miles. Its cabin is creative in its design while being practical and comfortable. Interestingly, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the sportiest version of Hyundai and KiaÂ’s E-GMP cars, apart from the high-performance Kia EV6 GT. Its design, value, range, fast charging and other useful tech easily make it one of best electric sedans you can buy.   BMW i4 — $53,195 Though the BMW i4 is essentially an electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, this EV sedan is something special. ItÂ’s packed with power and great driving dynamics in true BMW style. The rear-drive i4 eDrive40 is one quick car, but the i4 M50 is ridiculously fast. If you can get past the questionable nose and the iDrive 8 infotainment system, the i4 is an electric sleeper, and a performance bargain.

Weekly Recap: Mercedes continues the pseudo-coupe craze with AMG-tuned CUV

Sat, Dec 13 2014

But as BMW's X6 has demonstrated, sport sells in in the crossover segment, and Mercedes is giving the people what they want. BMW proved there is a market for crossover utility vehicles designed to look like coupes – as much as a vehicle with four doors and noticeable ground clearance can look like a coupe, anyway. Now comes the reply from Mercedes-Benz: the GLE Coupe. The rakish crossover is a harbinger of things to come from Mercedes, as it begins the company's transition to a new nomenclature and marks the debut of the AMG Sport line. It also continues the recent coupe craze. Designers from many automakers, like Nissan and Volkswagen, have increasingly turned to swoopy, dramatic styling to make utility vehicles and sedans seem more desirable. By revealing the GLE 450 AMG Sport model first, Mercedes is clearly hoping to cast the GLE Coupe as a sportier, lifestyle-oriented alternative in its lineup of beefy crossovers and SUVs. Mercedes used the word "sport," or a variation of it, 53 times in its press release, so uh yeah, it's sporty. It's not an empty promise: Benz means business with the AMG Sport line. This GLE Coupe gets a 3.0-liter biturbo V6 rated at 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque paired with Mercedes' new nine-speed automatic transmission, and it runs with 4Matic all-wheel drive. Specs on the other GLE Coupe models were not disclosed. But as BMW's X6 has demonstrated, sport sells in in the crossover segment, and Mercedes is giving the people what they want. After all, more than 260,000 people have bought X6s since 2008, and Mercedes wants a piece of that. From certain angles, the GLE Coupe even looks vaguely like an X6. "This is really a vehicle that is all about status," said Dave Sullivan, product analysis manager for research firm AutoPacific. "You can buy a SUV that doesn't have the inherent qualities of a SUV, such as cargo hauling. People will likely be drawn to the looks. Coupes are all the rage." BMW, however, isn't running from the fight, and the updated 2015 X6 is arriving in showrooms this month. It also added a smaller sibling, the X4, to its coupe-crossover stable in July. The GLE Coupe arrives next year, though Mercedes hasn't specified exactly when it will hit showrooms from the factory in Alabama, or specified details on the rest of the non-AMG Sport models. In 2008, it was surprising the X6 was a hit. In 2015, it will be even more surprising if the GLE Coupe isn't.
