I am selling my 1988 BMW M5.

The car has done 192,000 miles, it has spent its entire life in California and is completely rust free.

My M5 has a Comforti chip and the self-leveling suspension has been replaced by a previous owner - it has Bilstein shocks all round with Dinan springs in the front and stock BMW e28 springs in the rear.  The car has BMW 17" BBS (from E39) alloys (no, I will not sell these separately).  Otherwise the car is unmodified.

It has a brand new set of Continental tires and has just been Smogged.  The car is in great shape both mechanically and aesthetically.  I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere.  All electrics work except the occasional 'sticking' of the drivers electric wing mirror (I have a spare). The car has all manuals and complete trunk tool kit.

Negative points (see photos):  The car has 3 cracks in the dash (however, I do have a custom made 'cover' dash which fits over the top of the old one - this will come with the car).  There is a bit of cracking of the seat leather, but no tears.  There are a few stone chips, otherwise the paintwork is excellent.

I have removed the external badges, but I still have them and they can easily be replaced.

I am the 4th owner and I have pampered this M5 as the previous owners have done.  I have a folder full of receipts detailing recent and past maintenance work done.  All maintenance has been addressed.  Sadly I am selling this car because I am moving back to Europe.  I would love to see the car go to someone who really appreciates these rare classics.

There are always little imperfections that could be improved upon, but overall the car is in great condition.

You are welcome to come and view the car before bidding.  It is kept at my studio in Oakland.  Email me to arrange a viewing.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.  I will happily provide more photos.  Please, no time wasters, serious bidders and good drivers only.  Folks with less than 5 feedback will be removed unless you convince me of your interest before bidding.

Happy bidding and M5 owning.

BMW almost ready to roll out new 2 Series cabriolet

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

The 2 Series is a relatively new member of the BMW family, having been spun off of the 1 Series (itself one of the company's youngest lines) just last year. So far the range has been split between the Active Tourer and the 2 Series Coupe, but soon the latter will breed a new compact convertible to take the place of the outgoing 1 Series cabriolet, and here we have our best look at it yet.
Spied with the most minimal camouflage and its top down while undergoing its final rounds of development testing, this pre-production 2 Series cabrio looks about ready for show time. While the Active Tourer is based on a different front-drive platform, this convertible is, as you might have guessed, essentially a 2 Series Coupe with a folding fabric roof. That means rear-wheel drive (or potentially all-wheel drive if BMW extends its availability from the coupe to the convertible) win either 228i or M235i specification - both of them turbocharged, the former with a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter four and the latter with the 320-hp, 3.0-liter inline-six.
Considering that BMW got an approximately $8k premium for the 1 Series convertible over the coupe, expect the 2 Series cabrio to start at a little over $40k for the 228i and top out at around $53k for the M235i xDrive convertible. That is, assuming BMW offers it in that top spec, because at that rate we're getting perilously close to the $54,900 base price of the 435i convertible.

BMW 1 Series with B38 three-cylinder engine

Downsizing For BMW's Front-Wheel-Drive And i Futures
Output is quoted at 175 horsepower and BMW says it will hit 62 mph in 7.0 seconds.
The red five-door BMW 1 Series seen in this photo gallery has little to do with what is actually of importance here. What we've just tested at an airfield not far from Munich, Germany, is a new 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo inline three-cylinder gas engine that we'll be hearing an awful lot about in the coming few years.

BMW X1 testing is underway

Thu, 10 Oct 2013

It was just a few weeks ago that we got our first glimpse of the next-generation BMW X1, riding around on a flatbed. Now, we have the first batch of images of the small crossover moving under its own steam.
Like the previous round of photos, BMW's psychedelic camouflage is on hand to obscure sheetmetal details, but our intrepid spies still managed to discover a bit about the new X1. It's internal code-name will be F48, and it will sit on the same platform as the next-generation Mini and the BMW 1 Series GT. And for those keeping track at home, those are both front-drive platforms.
The reasoning for the X1's new layout, though, is understandable. Front-wheel drive is more space efficient and affordable, which are kind of big deals to customers. The next X1 won't be limited to its front wheels, though, as BMW's xDrive system is almost a certainty on higher-end trims.
