The 2016 BMW M4 GTS sounds so good
Wed, Feb 24 2016Critics and those hopelessly in love with the limited-edition, juiced-up 2016 BMW M4 GTS will both concede that water injection isn't a new technology, but it has also never been used on a production car with an intercooler before. It's traditionally been the realm of highly-tuned supercharged piston aircraft engines and some jets, although some pre-intercooler cars used the system as well. All that history sets the scene, but the M4 GTS steals it. Carfection takes a close, loving look at all the little details that set this BMW and its novel water-injection system apart from a typical M4, which it should be noted is no slouch at all. While it's DCT-only, it puts out 493 hp (a full 68 hp more than a normal M4). The example Carfection examines is painted in the available Frozen Dark Grey, with lovely 19- and 20-inch snowflake-style alloys set off in a color known as Acid Orange. Don't miss the startup and revving. The M4 GTS breathes through a titanium exhaust system, and it sounds monumental. As we mentioned in the reveal piece, this is a very limited-production vehicle. 700 will be built, and only 300 will make it to the States – and only 30 in the UK, where Carfection is based. Dinan S3-R BMW 1M Coupe
Wed, 02 Apr 2014I nearly shed tears a few years ago upon learning that BMW was only planning to produce a very limited quantity of its then-new 2011 1 Series M Coupe. In simplest terms, the two-door was a 1 Series fitted with a modified version of the automaker's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, and the running gear (gearbox, driveshaft, axles) from contemporary M3 models. It was also a return to form for the brand. Aggressively short and stubby in stature but packing telltale flared wheel arches that hinted at its potential, the four-seater was a spiritual successor to the original (and much loved) E30 M3 from decades earlier.
After spending a day with the original high-performance 1 at New York's Monticello Motor Club, I declared, "The little coupe with the big flares is old-school retro cool and deliciously fun to drive ... the new BMW 1 Series M Coupe doesn't target boy-racers, it targets enthusiasts." Yet sadly - and despite strong demand - BMW limited the model's production to just one year. All told, only 740 units made it to the States, and each was gobbled up at a starting price of $46,135, a price tag history will show to be a bargain.
Since I had little hope of even driving one again, I deliberately pushed all memories of BMW's 1 Series M Coupe from my mind - until my phone rang recently. On the other end was a representative from Dinan Engineering who wanted to know if I would be interested in driving the company's new S3-R BMW 1M. A quick Google search revealed it to be a heavily modified version of the discontinued 1 Series M Coupe. As if they needed an answer...
Toyota close to licensing deal with BMW for fuel cell technology
Wed, 23 Jan 2013For over a year now, we've been hearing about a potential partnership between Toyota and BMW on everything from sports cars to lithium-ion batteries, but one of the first cooperative projects between these two automakers could bring Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell technology to a BMW vehicle. Reuters is reporting that an announcement is likely to be made as soon as later this week regarding a BMW fuel cell vehicle that could be in production by 2020 with a prototype running around by 2015.
The last we heard of Toyota's fuel cell technology, it was in the FCV-R Concept that we saw at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, but there is no word how far along in development this system is. If it does come to fruition, such a vehicle for BMW would build on the automaker's commitment to hydrogen that started with the Hydrogen 7, which unlike a fuel cell vehicle, simply ran on hydrogen fuel rather than converting it to electricity for use in motors. We're definitely interested where this Toyota/BMW tie up could be headed.
