BMW eyes Z4 replacement before 2020

As BMW has been busy building four-door versions of two-door versions of four-door cars, less useful crossovers and front-drive minivans, you could be forgiven for thinking it had given up on its aging Z4 roadster. But that, we're pleased to report, isn't the case. According to Automotive News, BMW is hoping to release the next-generation Z4 (if that's what it ends up being called) before the close of this decade. The news outlet spoke to the company's chief engineer, Klaus Frohlich, at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, who indicated that BMW may split costs on the new car with Toyota, as part of the partnership between the two automakers. This partnership is integral to the next-gen Z4, largely because of the declining importance of the roadster segment, Herr Frohlich indicated. "If you look at the volume... we have to realize that these segments are shrinking," Frohlich told AN. According to the publication, sales of the Z4, which hit the market in its current form back in 2009, dropped 11 percent in Europe and 13 percent in North America. The car also is less attractive to customers in China for a number of reasons. "[Chinese customers] are not interested in roadsters," Frohlich explained. That's because privacy is a high priority for drivers in China, AN said. On top of that, open-roof cars expose their customers to China's notorious air pollution, which drivers are understandably keen to avoid. Related Video:

2018 BMW 3 Series spied looking cold as ice

The 3 Series is without question the single most important model line for BMW. So, despite the fact that it was just refreshed for 2016 with updates that sharpened its steering and suspension, you can bet that work is well underway on the next edition. These fresh spy shots show just how far into the development process BMW has gotten as engineers test the model in the harsh conditions of the arctic. Camouflage hides on lot on this 3 Series, but we can still see that the nose appears to take cues from the latest 7 Series. Even through the swirling wrap, you can spot shapely headlights that flow into the long, narrow kidney grille. In profile, the sedan retains the proportions of the current model, with a longish hood and short rear deck. Around back, big, round taillights protrude outward, but these somewhat garish pieces might be development parts that don't reflect the final design. BMW reportedly uses the codename G20 for the next-gen 3 Series and plans to make the new model wider and with a longer wheelbase to create a larger passenger compartment. Even with the dimension stretch, weight could drop thanks to lighter materials. We expect that BMW will continue to offer a vast range of powertrains, and rumors hint the future M3 might use a plug-in hybrid system to boost power and lower emissions. BMW X4 Concept is no Shanghai surprise

"One in four new BMW cars is now a BMW SAV." If you're new to BMW parlance, SAV stands for Sports Activity Vehicle, a vehicle type most of us more commonly refer to as a crossover, and that statistic, which comes straight from the automaker itself, tells you all you need to know about why the X4 Concept you see above exists.
Like its larger X6 sibling, the BMW X4 Concept tries to shove a crossover in a mold shaped vaguely like a fastback coupe. Put another way, the X4 is likely to be a polarizing design, though perhaps not to the extent that the X6 divided opinions. As for us, we definitely prefer the styling of this X4 Concept, with its strong character lines and impressive wheel-to-bodyside ratio, over that of its bigger brother. That said, we're sure the AMC Eagle comparisons will begin in earnest starting right about... now.
Dimensionally, it seems the most obvious machine with which to compare this X4 Concept is the 3 Series Wagon - we're not sure if it will be as spacious inside as the 3 Series Gran Turismo. A two-inch stretch in the wheelbase ought to bring a commensurate improvement in legroom, and a body that's nearly five inches longer should be a boon for cargo capacity. Of course, that fastback roofline will surely cut down on the car's roominess inside, but we'll have to wait for the final production model to judge its true capabilities.
