This 1991 BMW 850i represents the cutting edge technology at the time of its production. Under its finely sculpted hood is an aluminum block 5.0L/296 HP V-12 with the first drive by wire throttle system ever used in a regular production vehicle. This finely engineered engine is mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission. An active 5-link rear suspension and electronic stability control, also one of the industry's first, keep the 850i in control even at its limit. The interior offers a wide array of amenities including dual zone climate control, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel and a multi speaker stereo system. Capping off all of those goodies is the fact that the 850i is one of the best looking German cars of the last 50 years making it one desirable grand touring machine. This 850i Coupe is Calypso Red Metallic, though the paint has some scratches and dings. The hood has been repainted at some time. The driver's seat bolster has some slight wear. The sunroof has been disabled and the driver's seat height control only lifts one side of the seat. This fine BMW runs and drives smooth. The matching Bridgestone Potenza tires show lots of tread and the two batteries are about 2 years old. The Auto Check and Carfax reports both show NO accidents. Behind the scenes of BMW's 'Drift Mob,' Part 1
Sat, 28 Jun 2014Generally speaking, marketing and journalism don't mix, but every now and then, what goes into the marketing of a car - the 2015 BMW M235i, in this case - is worth documenting. In that spirit, we took BMW up on its offer to bring us behind the scenes of its upcoming "drift mob" video, starring five red M235i coupes frolicking around a traffic circle in a major world city (BMW has asked us to be coy about which one so as not to blow its cover before the shoot).
The five drivers can all be considered legends of modern-day drifting and stunt driving: Rhys Millen, Samuel Hübinette, Dai Yoshihara, Rich Rutherford and Conrad Grunewald.
As the only US media outlet in attendance, Autoblog plans to follow up with a full story on the experience once BMW polishes and releases the video in a month or so. In the meantime, check out our photos of this epic practice session we captured on our first day hanging with the crew, and be sure to watch this space for more behind-the-scenes action.
BMW celebrates with M4 DTM Champion Edition
Tue, 21 Oct 2014Go back just a few seasons, and Germany's DTM touring car series was a straight-up competition between Audi and Mercedes-Benz. But BMW rejoined the race in 2012, winning both the drivers' and constructors' titles on its first year back and celebrating with a special matte-black M3 DTM Champion Edition. Last season, it won the constructors' championship but not the drivers', and this year it did the opposite. In short, it's been an impressive comeback for the Bavarian automaker, and to celebrate this year's accomplishments, it's followed up with the new M4 DTM Champion Edition for Europe you see here.
Based on the new M4 coupe - which forms the basis for BMW's DTM challenger as well as its pace car - the Champion Edition is distinguished by its special livery: The orange grille frame, the matte black hood and trunk with multicolored stripes, the black stripes along its shoulder and rocker panel, and the blacked-out 19-inch wheels all to pay homage to champion Marco Wittmann's racecar, as does special lettering on the rear windows.
Other enhancements include black front splitter and skirts, carbon front flaps and mirror caps, rear spoiler and carbon diffuser, while autographed sill plates and carbon interior trim with the car's serial number adorn the cabin. Only 23 examples will be offered, symbolic of the number adorning the winning tin-top racer and the flank of this special edition as well.
M-thusiast pops the question at BMW Welt
Tue, 02 Sep 2014We've seen all manner of marriage proposals over the years, but our favorites, of course, revolve around cars. One guy proposed to his girlfriend at a traffic stop, another during an autocross event, while yet another got dozens of Mazda MX-5 owners together to spell "Marry Me?" in Miatas. This latest proposal, however, put the M in Marriage as only a BMW enthusiast could.
While visiting BMW Welt in Munich, Bachir from Lebanon rolled out in a new blue M3 and got down on one knee in front of the gathered crowds to pop the question to Layal, his girlfriend of one year.
We'll let you watch the clip for yourself to see how it went, but suffice it to say that she was delighted. The couple plan to drive to the church in a procession of M cars for what promises to be a high-octane ceremony in their home country.
