The 760 trim comes only as a long-wheelbase model and the 750i can be configured with either a rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive or ActiveHybrid drivetrain. The 740i trims come with a 3.0L TwinPower turbo-charged 6-cylinder engine, rated at 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The 750i trims come with a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine rated at 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The 760, only available in long-wheelbase form, comes with a big 6.0L V12 engine capable of 535 horsepower and 550 lb-feet of torque. Most trims are available with a brand-new 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2011 ActiveHybrid 7 comes only on the 750i, and pairs the 4.4L V8 engine with an electric motor system and a 120-volt lithium-ion battery system to produce a total of 455 horsepower. Power is delivered through an 8-speed automatic transmission and a lithium-ion battery mounted under the trunk floor. BMW anticipates it will deliver a 15-percent improvement in fuel economy versus the conventional 750i. BMW's xDrive, an all wheel drive system available on the 750, uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to adjust torque toward the wheels with the best traction while interfacing with the car's steering and stability control. During normal driving, 60 percent of engine power is sent to the rear wheels. The 7-Series also utilizes a system called Driving Dynamics Control, which interfaces with the air suspension and helps to find the best compromise at any moment between suspension firmness and ride comfort. The system takes into consideration steering response, transmission shifts and engine power. Standard equipment on the base 740 trims include four-zone climate control, navigation, a 10-speaker premium sound system, rain sensing wipers, HID headlamps, fog lamps, Dakota leather upholstery and steering wheel, power folding mirrors and 18-inch aluminum wheelsAll 7-series also are equipped with Brake Energy Regeneration, which attempts to recapture some of energy lost during braking and convert it to usable electrical power. It does so by activating the alternator only when coasting or braking. BMW claims this will help achieve an efficiency improvement of 3 percent. The 750 trims adds heated 16-way multi-contour seats, illuminated door handles, Soft-Close doors and trunk, and Comfort Access keyless entry system, which responds to the proximity of your car's key fob and automatically unlocks the door and allows the driver to start the engine without ever inserting a key into a lock. The luxury-oriented 760, available only as an extended-wheelbase model, adds self-leveling suspension, speed-sensitive steering, ventilated rear seats, a heads-up display and power sunshades.Safety features across the 7-Series range include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, front side airbags, rear head-protecting side bags, side-curtain bags, knee bags, active head restraints, traction control with rollover sensors, front and rear parking sensors, tire pressure monitoring, auto-on headlamps, adaptive tail lamps and crash-activated headrests. BMW Assist emergency telematics are also standard. The 740 and 750 both offer as options, a rear-view camera, automatic headlamps, a lane-departure warning system, 20-inch wheels, a premium sound system and a rear-entertainment system. Options on the 760 include massaging rear seats and an M Sport package that adds 20-inch wheels performance tires various body trim and an Alcantara headliner. The high-performance 7-Series Alpina model is slated to return late in the 2011 model year. The Alpina B7 gets a 500-horsepower twin-turbo version of the 750i's 4.4L V8, an Alpina-designed 6-speed automatic transmission and Alpina-specific 21-inch wheels.

She's just a girl... who's an E28 fanatic

Tue, 02 Apr 2013

Ashley Rodriguez has a thing for the BMW E28. The amateur train photographer has owned over 15 of the cars in her brief lifetime, and says she's attracted to the old 5 Series because of how rare they are. All told, she's owned every variation of the E28 with the exception of the 2.4td, and the crew from Petrolicious recently stopped by to train their lenses on her most recent acquisition: a lovely M535i. The site's latest video, Rare Things, takes a closer look at just what draws Rodriguez to the E28 and how her passion for the cars has evolved over the years.
As usual, Petrolicious serves up plenty of gorgeous footage of the vintage German sedan, and anyone who's ever harbored an obsession over any one particular model can certainly hear a few chords ring true in Rodriguez's words. Check out the clip below to see what we mean.

BMW 6 Series Convertible gets a little work done for 2015

Sat, 02 Aug 2014

Truth be told, I've never really found the modern BMW 6 Series to be a particularly attractive car, in Coupe, Convertible, or sedan Gran Coupe forms. This current generation certainly looks a whole lot better than the Bangle-fied Six that came before it to my eyes, but on the whole, I find much of the car's design to be fussy and awkward. There's a new 6 Series on the way, scheduled to arrive sometime in 2017 or 2018, but to hold us over until then, BMW is freshening its current range, as evidenced by this convertible prototype our trusty spies recently caught testing.
Will the changes to the current 6 Series be an improvement? Perhaps. Up front, there are restyled headlamps and a new front bumper, and at the rear, BMW has redesigned the LED taillamps to bring them more in line with the rest of the company's offerings. Aside from those modest tweaks, we don't expect much more to change on the Big Six - the interior will likely carry over with some minor tweaks (or new colors), and it's possible the powertrains could be massaged gently for gains in either power, efficiency, or both.
Whether you think this new look is pretty or not, this freshened 6 Series will likely debut sometime next year, while BMW's engineers and designers craft the all-new version. See it from several angles in our gallery, above.

2014 Dinan S1 BMW M5

Thu, 04 Sep 2014

The last time the Dinan name graced the pages of Autoblog, Michael Harley was waxing poetic about the S3-R BMW 1M Coupe, a car that still stands in his ranks as one of the best cars he's ever driven. And that wasn't just because it was, you know, amazing. It's because as far as tuners go, Dinan produces some seriously well-executed products. Harley said of the 1M, for example, "It was so fully formed and well-rounded that it felt like BMW itself had made it."
Eager to sample some of these wholly wonderful wares, I cleared a few hours in my Monterey Car Week schedule and booked a date with the S1 M5 you see here - the (current) daily driver of Mr. Steve Dinan, himself. But unlike the S3-R 1M the company tuned previously, the donor car in question here is vastly different and, if I'm honest, not as good. See, I adore the stock 1M in a way words cannot express, but the standard-issue M5... good as it is, there are indeed a few flaws.
But after driving the Dinan S1 M5 around the Monterey Peninsula, I can confirm two things. First, Harley's conclusion that Dinan builds products that feel 100 percent BMW-spec is absolutely true. And second, Steve and the gang haven't just created a tuned M5, they've built a better one.
