EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, YOU COME ACROSS A VEHICLE LIKE THIS, A TRUE ORIGINAL THAT WAS NICLEY KEPT BY IT'S ORIGINAL OWNER, MY FATHER. THIS WAS HIS EVERY DAY DRIVER, BACK AND FORTH TO WORK FOR 15 YEARS. SINCE A FEW YEARS AGO, MY FAHTER HAS RETIRED AND MOVED SOUTH. AS SAD AS IT IS TO SEE IT GO, AND AFTER HAVING ALMOST NO USE AT ALL THIS PAST YEAR, IT WAS DECIDED THAT IT SHOULD NOT JUST SIT AND NEEDLESSLY AGE IN A GARAGE. THERE ARE NO SALES GIMICS HERE. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET. BUT KNOW THAT MY FATHER HAD THIS CAR SERVICED REGULARLY AND IRONICALLY, IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, IT HAD JUST ABOUT EVERY REQUIRED PART REPLACED OR SERVICED, INCLUDED IT'S SECOND ROUND OF TIRES (MICHELIN TOP OF THE LINE). THERE IS A DOCUMENTED SERVICE CHECK LIST TOTALING OVER $5,000 IN REPLACED PARTS, SERVICE, AND NEW TIRES IN THE PAST 18 MONTHS. SURE THIS IS A 1997 AND IT IS NOT BY ANY MEANS A NEW CAR. HOWEVER, YOU WILL NOT SEE MANY ORIGINAL'S WITH THIS KIND OF MAINTENANCE RECORDS AND LOW MILEAGE. IT HAS ONE NOTABLE FLAW, ON THE REAR PASSENGER QUATER PANEL, A VERY SMALL DING/SCRATCH ABOUT 5 TO 6 INCHES LONG THAT COULD BE REPAIRED BY DENT WIZARD VERY EASILY (ABOUT $100 BUCKS). THE INTERIOR IS CLEAN, YOU WON'T FIND PLASTIC APPLIED TRANSPARENT COVERS MAKING APPEAR AS IF JUST ROLLED OFF THE LINE. IT IS SIMPLY A NICE INTERIOR FOR IT'S AGE, NOTHING RIPPED ON THE DASH OR FADDED DUE TO SUN RAYS. THE CAR ALWAYS HAS BEEN GARAGED KEPT AND FOR ALL IT'S LIFE SPENT IT'S WINTERS IN A HEATED GARAGE WHILE MY FATHER MAINTAINED HIS "SNOW BIRD" STATUS. 2014 BMW Z4 sDrive35is
Tue, 14 May 2013The BMW Z3/Z4 roadster has never really had a widespread following because it has either been too humble and small a roadster (albeit with some fun and very low-volume M editions) or it has been - in this E89 generation - too casual an image leader with no racier aspirations. The current 480-hp Z4 GTEs don't count, since they are as stock a Z4 as today's Pamela Anderson is the same blonde actress we knew as Heidi on Home Improvement. You know, sort of like those ever-so-slightly modified Toyota Camry coupes competing in NASCAR.
The ultimate highpoint for the BMW Z roadster franchise was at the very start of its life in the mid-90s, in the James Bond film GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan. The Stinger missiles that Q's team installed behind the Z3's headlights were never fired, and BMW never even offered this self-defense package as an option. Yet another case of the ol' bait and switch.
And in all these subsequent years of Z3s and Z4s strutting their long-hooded stuff, the little sporting Bimmer could really have used a live Stinger missile or two to spice things up. The current Z4 exists, it is pretty dang sexy, and BMW seems content to let it linger there. We just drove the new midlife version of the roadster near BMW headquarters in Munich, and it served to reinforce our feelings.
Corvette gets slidey with Britain's best performance cars
Sat, 18 Oct 2014Autocar wants to find Britain's best driver's car, and it's challenging a murderers' row of some of the world's best performance vehicles to find out, including the latest Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. All of them were therefore assembled at the Castle Combe Circuit to find a winner.
If it wants to take the crown from this pack of mostly European competitors, the 'Vette has to beat some steep competition. Its challengers include monsters like the Ferrari 458 Speciale, Ariel Atom 3.5R and Jaguar F-Type Coupe. As a further hurdle for the winner to clear, Autocar also has last year's champ among the fighters - the Porsche 911 GT3.
Even if you're not at all interested in the C7, there's still something here for practically any fan of fast cars. The competitors include relative oddities among the pack like the Renault Mégane RS Trophy and Alfa Romeo 4C. Plus, Autocar has some well-positioned microphones that let you hear the Atom wailing like a banshee and the roar of the 458 Speciale. Gus Van Sant casts the BMW i8 in soft light
Sun, 18 May 2014BMW has spent the better part of a century building its reputation with fossil-burning transportation, but now it's banking heavily on the success of its new i family of electric vehicles. In order to succeed, it will need to sell examples of the i3, but sell the idea with the i8. And in order to do so, it is going to need some out-of-the-box promotional thinking. And that's just what it seems to have done with this latest campaign of television commercials.
The series of three (or at least that's how many have been released thus far) ads wax more poetic than most of the car ads we've seen. But while they might skimp on the technical details, they don't skip over the talent. The videos are the work of Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant, the cinematic artist best known for films like Good Will Hunting, Milk and Finding Forrester.
Van Sant has also solicited the voices of Sam Hazeldine (Caleb from Resurrection), Sting's daughter Mickey Sumner (Sophie from Frances Ha) and Michael Pitt (Jimmy from Boardwalk Empire), but doesn't hide them behind the microphone in the recording studio. Instead they serve as the face of Bavaria's new hybrid sports car, and the results are rather stunning. See for yourself in the trio of videos below.
