One Of Only 237 Five-speed California Models Imported Into The Usa on 2040-cars
La Jolla, California, United States
The e24 model is a masterful combination of top-notch German engineering, timeless styling and spirited performance, all skillfully balanced on BMW's newly developed and better handling e28 chassis, powered with the rock-solid mechanicals that BMW has long been well-known for as the premier engine manufacturer in Germany's aircraft industry.
The six-series coupes are very comfortable, long-distance driving machines, which were developed out of a series of hard-fought successes on the European racing scene which early on BMW had to earn (the hard way) to even successfully begin to sell cars to the general public in any great quantity and thus allow the company to survive the lean times during the mid 1960's. In the end, it was the success of the 2002 that created the solid financial foundation for BMW to begin to redesign their new version of the 2-door Coupe concept in the early 1980's
Just as she was assembled, this vehicle shows it's original matching chassis & drive-train production numbers (for collector car purposes) Always a California owned and garaged vehicle, the ultra-smooth M30 six-cylinder motor (rebuilt professionally at 163,000 miles by Bob Smith BMW in Los Angeles) coupled with the Getrag wide ratio 5-speed gearbox provides a truly amazing highway driving experience, at all speeds and under nearly all road conditions.
This original example of BMW's 'Big Coupe' is one of just a handful (only 237 in LHD) of the coveted five-speed 'California' special e24 models, these few exported to the USA upon special order during the initial years of the new e28 chassis development for BMW's new line of five and six and seven series cars.
e24 VIN: XXXX6725576 (US Specification; California Model) was assembled in Nov. '82 under special order for us through Santa Monica BMW for European delivery (Germany) Options added were Alpina's upgraded sport suspension to the vehicle (as BMW offered no sport package at the time) Also added was the sunroof and the newest On-Board Computer system, which tied into the Motronic system to give the driver the vehicle computer data in easily readable and real-time form. Upon US delivery, the 16" BBS RS 3-piece racing wheels were fitted and remain on the vehicle.
Raw power from lightweight aluminum head/iron block engines BMW is now world famous for, the M30 straight-six engine in the e24's and e28's were now more economically controlled and thus also made more environmentally 'friendly' by incorporation of the new (and very reliable) 'Motronic' engine management system developed for BMW by Robert Bosch. This system reduced engine emissions significantly without sacrificing engine performance and delivered excellent fuel efficiency, thus the M30 engine, coupled with the nearly indestructible Getrag wide-ratio manual transmission and it's limited-slip differential drive unit made up the e24 Coupe traction grabbing drivetrain which is truly inspiring to operate on high-speed pavement.
Of course, topping everything off visually is Karmann's excellent original bodywork on the e24, indeed very similar in appearance (although radically different where one can't see it) to the earlier work done by Karmann for the first (european) 1976-1982 e24 cars, back then on the BMW e12 chassis. These light body 2-door sport coupe bodyshells were some of the last handwork done for BMW by the original Karmannn body company. before body construction was brought in-house to BMW in 1985.
Recent Upgrades: New e28 M6 front suspension (sub-frame to steering box) w/up-graded lightweight components-inc. all bushings/fittings...it will hold you in the tightest of turns as the sport seats hold you in place. Bilstein struts and shocks of course. Racing Dynamics lowered (7/8") finally replaced the original (but worn) Alpina/Bilstein suspension setup... Period correct (original) brushed BBS RS 16" (3-piece) style 005/6 alloy racing wheels w/SR tires. New high-output battery, low-profile tires and brakes...The fresh factory (twin) exhaust system releases the full potential of this very sweet sounding big six Coupe.
Clean/Clear Oregon title. Also included are the set of factory service/parts manuals and in the trunk the full set of original HEYCO roadside repair tools, that came with the vehicle originally. Frankly, If these cars are maintained properly over the years and are not subject to rust they likely will last easily 40-50 years and (unlike the e9 Coupe) were assembled from Galvanized steel and OEM parts are still readily available from BMW. This redesign of the earlier e12 based coupe was without compromise in both engineering, materials, craftsmanship and the solid integration of the world's highest quality electrical components.
Myself, having driven this particular car for almost for 28 years.. I have to agree with most of the critical assessments that this particular variant will likely become one of the most collectible cars BMW produced after 1975 and IMO, is one very special automobile.

BMW shows off 435i Coupe with M Performance parts
Sat, 20 Jul 2013Greetings from the famous Circuito do Estoril racetrack in Portugal. We're here to put the 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe through its paces, and we'll have the chance to sample the updated 2014 BMW M5 with its new Competition Pack, as well. But before going out for some hot laps, we took a few minutes to check out this 435i Coupe that's been fitted with a full suite of goodies from the BMW M Performance parts catalog.
Starting with the exterior, carbon fiber bits are the most noticeable additions, with the lightweight material added in the form of a massive front splitter, mirror caps and a rear spoiler. Other visual changes include lightweight 20-inch wheels, a blacked-out grille, and unique M Performance side stripes. No, that's not a shadow you see under the 435i's strong side character line - that's a stripe. Yes, we're serious.
Inside (we couldn't get photos of the interior, sorry!), BMW has added its sport steering wheel with race display, unique M floormats, steel pedals, and a whole mess of carbon fiber and Alcantara trim.
BMW looking to save billions with cost cuts
Wed, 18 Jun 2014BMW is planning a fairly extensive overhaul in a bid to recoup some its annual costs, with CEO Norbert Reithofer (pictured above) aiming to save three to four billion euro ($4 to $5.4 billion) per year to help keep the company's profit margins between eight and 10 percent, while also maintaining investments in production expansion and new tech. BMW's profit margins sat at 9.4 percent in 2013.
According to Automotive News Europe, Reithofer is none too pleased about costs at Mini and on the 1 Series, although neither AN nor its source story, from Germany's Manager Magazin, elaborate on what steps could be taken to improve losses on either project. That makes it hard to figure out just where the fat will be trimmed from.
What may happen, though, is that BMW attempts to trim 100 million euros ($135 million) from its German labor costs each year; a solution hinted at a few weeks ago by Germany newspaper Muenchner Merkur. While a dramatic cost reduction, 100 million euros still doesn't begin to even approach the savings envisioned by Reithofer.
Autoblog's Editors' Picks: Our complete list of the best new vehicles
Mon, May 13 2024It's not easy to earn an “EditorsÂ’ Picks” at Autoblog as part of the rating and review process that every new vehicle goes through. Our editors have been at it a long time, which means weÂ’ve driven and reviewed virtually every new car you can go buy on the dealer lot. There are disagreements, of course, and all vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses, but this list features what we think are the best new vehicles chosen by Autoblog editors. We started this formal review process back in 2018, so there's quite of few of them now. So what does it mean to be an EditorsÂ’ Pick? In short, it means itÂ’s a car that we can highly recommend purchasing. There may be one, multiple, or even zero vehicles in any given segment that we give the green light to. What really matters is that itÂ’s a vehicle that weÂ’d tell a friend or family member to go buy if theyÂ’re considering it, because itÂ’s a very good car. The best way to use this list is is with the navigation links below. Click on a segment, and you'll quickly arrive at the top rated pickup truck or SUV, for example. Use the back button to return to these links and search in another segment, like sedans. If youÂ’ve been keeping up with our monthly series of the latest vehicles to earn EditorsÂ’ Pick status, youÂ’re likely going to be familiar with this list already. If not, welcome to the complete list that weÂ’ll be keeping updated as vehicles enter (and others perhaps exit) the good graces of our editorial team. We rate a new car — giving it a numerical score out of 10 — every time thereÂ’s a significant refresh or if it happens to be an all-new model. Any given vehicle may be impressive on a first drive, but we wait until itÂ’s in the hands of our editors to put it through the same type of testing as every other vehicle that rolls through our test fleet before giving it the EditorsÂ’ Pick badge. This ensures consistency and allows more voices to be heard on each individual model. And just so you donÂ’t think weÂ’ve skipped trims or variants of a model, we hand out the EditorsÂ’ Pick based on the overarching model to keep things consistent. So, when you read that the 3 Series is an EditorsÂ’ Pick, yes, that includes the 330i to the M3 and all the variants in between. If thereÂ’s a particular version of that car we vehemently disagree with, we make sure to call that out.
