* * PLEASE DO NOT BID ON THIS CAR UNLESS YOU ARE PLANNING ON PURCHASING IT AND HAVE THE MONEY AVAILABLE TO DO SO * * -Thank You -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are bidding on an exceptional example of a classic 1984 BMW 528e. I believe in providing as much detailed information as I possibly can, so here we go: What Makes This 528e Exceptional: * Second Owner car - I just purchased this car from the original owner less than a year ago. That original owner was a pilot and in case you don't know anything about pilots, they are MILITARISTIC when it comes to properly maintaining cars - and he was. * Properly Maintained & Pampered Car - This car has been meticulously pampered it's entire life since ordered from BMW. Oil changes all religiously done every 3K. Previous owner was fanatical about the maintainence of this beauty. And I have spent $4,000+ in just the past few months to make sure the car runs reliably & flawlessly. * Garage Kept - The original owner kept this in an airplane hangar for almost it's entire life, so the paint & body integrity (for it's age) is phenomenal * Low Miles - This car only has 161,000 original miles and drives like it. Feels like a brand new car. Odometer works perfectly so the miles are correct * New Michelin Tires - The tires were replaced with new ones a month before I acquired it. I'd give them about 95-98% tread * New Timing Belt - I just had the timing belt professionally changed at 159,000 by an authorized BMW mechanic. You should be good to go for at least another 60-80,000 miles. * A/C Works Perfectly - The AC works flawlessly and is ice cold * Body is Excellent - Now since this car is driven and is 30+ years old, it would be an exaggeration to say the body is perfect. But considering it's age I'd say it's nearly perfect. Conservatively I'd give it about a 9.5 out of 10. There are only a few tiny typical dings. Nothing major. Specifically no rust, dents, cracks, or major body flaws whatsoever * Title is Clear - Car has never been in an accident. Structurally the car is nearly flawless. Like new * 100% Rust-Free Clean Original Body - This has been a CA car since purchased new in 1984. I cannot see evidence of any oxidation anywhere on the car. Structurally the car is nearly flawless. Looks new to my eyes * Recent Paint - I would give the paint about a 9 out of 10. The original owner said he did have the hood & roof redone in the factory original color because after decades the clear coat started to dull. But from a couple of feet away the paint looks spotless. Under a microscope I think the trained eye of a car collector would be able to tell that those 2 panels have been repainted. It is because os that I conservatively give the paint of the car a score of 9 out of 10. * Excellent Rare Custom "Bahama Beige" Leather Interior - I have never seen this particular BMW leather interior before I bought this car. The original owner told me that he custom ordered this leather so it may very well be one of a kind. On top of that, the overall condition of this leather is excellent especially considering it's age. I would give it about a 9 out of 10. Not perfect, but nearly so. The only flaw I see is a tiny hole in the driver's seat. I priced that fix (if you chose to do it) at $200 for brand new leather. * Sunroof - It works perfectly. Opens & closes with the power switch. Now since I live in LA and we never get rain, I can't say with 100% confidence that it is leak proof. I do have the car professionally cleaned frequently and once or twice I noticed a drop or two of water inside but that is after high pressure water sprayed right onto the roof. So, worst case scenario I'd say the sunroof might leak a tiny bit, but nothing major. * New Headliner - The original owner said he had installed a brand new original color headliner so there is no sagging, discoloration or rips in the headliner. Up top it looks nearly new to my eyes. If any flaw (elaborated below under "Flaws"), the panels to both the left & right of the rear view window look a little aged. * Brand New Brakes at 159K - I had the brakes redone at 159K including new rotors, pads, fluid flush. The brakes stop this car on a dime. Perfect. No squealing, grinding, pulling, vibrations, just tight perfect braking. * New Computer & Electrical Switches - The only intermittent flaw the car had when I bought it was that it wouldn't start immediately once every 100 (or so) starts. So between my mechanic & I we started replacing TONS of electrical parts (which cost thousands of dollars too) We started with ignition/electrical switches, fuses, wiring, safety neutral switch (I think) and ultimately replaced the car's Computer. It was a very expensive minor problem which we finally fixed. The new Computer was the problem. Now the car starts 1st time every time. * New CD/AM/FM/USB/Bluetooth Audiophile Stereo - Being a music lover I did spend quite a lot of money (nearly $1,000) installing a new stereo with new Polk speakers in both front & back. So be advised that the original (Becker?) stereo is not currently installed. I believe it might be stored in the trunk * New Viper Car Security System - I also decided to protect this rare car with a new state of the art Viper car alarm which will actually page your extra remote if the car gets tampered with. Installed by professionals and works flawlessly. * Original Factory BMW Rims - The 4 factory rims looks pretty great overall, but not perfect. I have spent a ton of money every week to have the these detailed rims professionally cleaned. 3 of the 4 looks almost new. But one of them appears to have been scrubbed a little too hard. These rims are easy to find if you simply wanted to replace that one. I would have to give them an overall score of about 8 out of 10. * Suspension Feels & Handles Like New - The original owner said he had replaced the shocks or struts and it really feels like it to me. Car feels like a new 80's Beemer. * Electrical Switches Work Great - Power window switches all work perfectly. Power locks which lock & unlock by remote are working perfectly. * No Dash/Warning/Service Lights On * Perfect Clutch - Even though the original owner did not provide paperwork to prove the clutch had been replaced, he said he did. I asked my mechanic to verify his clutch replacement claim. It is my mechanic's opinion that the clutch has been replaced with a new clutch probably within the last 30,000 miles estimated. Either way, the clutch engages & releases perfectly as it should. * The Gears Cruise at 2K RPMs at 70 MPH - This 5 speed is geared in such a way that in 5th gear on the freeway it hovers around 2K RPMs even while cruising at 65-70 MPH. Makes for a very smooth, quiet ride and increased MPGs too. Minor Flaws Worth Mentioning * Windshield Has a Couple Dings - The windshield is not perfect, but doesn't have any major splits or cracks. There are just a few small impact dings (one is pictured). None have spidered outward or split. They are still small ding-like imperfections. I'd be willing to bet that Safelite Glass Repair could probably repair them easily. Or you could choose to replace the whole windshield. * Cruise Control Currently Inoperable - When I obtained the car occasionally there would be this slightly annoying sound upon start up. My BMW mechanic diagnosed that it was the Cruise unit. He recommended just disconnecting the unit and I agreed. So the cruise electronics are there but no longer functional. * Dashboard (pictured) - For a 30 year old car I'd say the dash looks pretty damn good, but not perfect. It has just a few typical hairline cracks. No huge chips or signs of abuse. But if you are a vintage car collector & are expecting a factory perfect dashboard, then you will be disappointed. Conservatively I would give the dash about an 8 out of 10 in overall condition. * Slightly Aged Interior Rear Window Panel (pictured) - This is a very minor thing to mention but given how great the overall condition of the interior, carpets & headliner looks to be, I would say that I noticed at least one of the "side interior panels" (that surrounds the rear window) appear to be original. And as you would expect with a 30 year old car, in contrast they look older than the new looking headliner. Probably original. Not terrible and barely noticeable to me, but worth mentioning. * Gear Shift Knob - Lastly, the gear shift knob appears to still be the original BMW stock knob from 1984. Because of it's age & wear, it is starting to peel a little. Not terrible, but you might choose to replace. A new stock BMW replacement goes for about $35 on eBay. * One Slight Imperfection in Driver's Door Panel - Super minor. See picture Condition Summary: When I picked up my car most recently from my mechanic I specifically asked him this: Question: "After all the inspections & repairs you've either verified or done yourself on this car, if this was your car, would you hesitate to drive this across the country? Through the desert?" Answer: "Absolutely not. I wouldn't hesitate to drive this car anywhere." Recharge Wrap-up: New Mitsubishi Evo PHEV, Amsterdam buses go all electric by 2025
Thu, Apr 30 2015Mitsubishi hopes to launch a new vehicle badged as the Evo based on the Concept XR-PHEV II. Mitsubishi President and COO Tetsuro Aikawa tells Autocar the new vehicle will share characteristics with the outgoing Lancer Evolution loved by enthusiasts, but will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain in the body of a compact crossover. "In Japanese, when you pronounce 'Oh,' it means 'king,'" says Aikawa. "So we would like to launch this type of car, featuring EV and PHEV technology, which is the ultimate of its kind. 'EV' for electric vehicle, 'O' for king - Evo." The Mitsu boss also envisions the four-wheel-drive Evo to be "light and fast - something performance-oriented." Read more at Autocar, or at Hybrid Cars. Amsterdam aims to have all its buses running on electric power by 2025. Within two years, the city will have 40 electric buses in operation, and will phase out the rest of the diesel fleet in the following years. "This project means we are saying goodbye to symbolic behavior and pilot projects," says transport alderman Abdeluheb Choho. "We have decided to just do it, not to experiment with five buses." Read more at Clean Technica. BMW and General Motors are both listed in the top five US organizations generating and using green energy onsite. In an EPA list, BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing facility is number four, with credit going to its use of landfill gas. In 2013, 69,383,477 kWh - or 37 percent of its total usage - came from green energy. GM's Fort Wayne Assembly was number five, with 43 percent of its power coming from methane from a nearby landfill. Volkwsagen also made the Top 30 list, at number 15, for its Chattanooga assembly plant's use of solar power. See the EPA's full list, and read more at Green Car Congress. Volkswagen will release its 2014 sustainability report on Twitter on Monday, May 4. It will be the first step in using the social medium to distribute information on economic, environmental and social sustainability to a larger audience. The report will include a section called "Electrifying China with a tailor-made efficiency strategy," which focuses on reducing CO2 emissions through the use of electric vehicles. Volkswagen has already begun releasing highlights from its report on its Twitter account with the hashtag #VWCSR. Read more in the press release below and, of course, on Twitter next week.
BMW discussing supercar collaboration with McLaren
Mon, Sep 21 2015BMW is reportedly considering a new halo supercar. But rather than go it alone, word has it that the Bavarian automaker is discussing a potential partnership with McLaren to make the idea a reality. This according to Britain's Car magazine, which suggests that negotiations are well underway. The proposal would see the BMW supercar based on the same architecture that will to underpin Woking's P16 project that's set to replace current 650S. Rather than use the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that McLaren developed together with Ricardo, the Bimmer version would use Munich's own engine: a 4.0-liter V8 with quad turbochargers – two conventional spools and two more electrically driven chargers. Their combined effect would net an expected 750 horsepower. Further differentiations on McLaren's carbon monocoque architecture for use in the BMW would include custom bodywork, aerodynamics, and interior fitments to include a unique instrument panel. Production, however, would be handled at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, to the tune of several hundred units per year. The project would take the place of several aborted programs undertaken internally at BMW. One called for an entirely unique supercar developed in-house, referred to internally as the M100. When that project was aborted so that BMW could concentrate on the i sub-brand, BMW's own skunkworks shifted its focus to developing a more performance-focused version of the i8, known by some as the i8 CSi. When that project was canned as well, discussions with McLaren commenced. It wouldn't be the first time BMW would outsource development of its own supercar, or even the first time BMW would collaborate with McLaren on such a project. Initial development work on the original M1 in the 1970s was undertaken by Lamborghini before being taken in-house. And, of course, BMW provided the engine for the legendary McLaren F1. Meanwhile McLaren performed a similar function for Mercedes-Benz with the SLR, demonstrating Woking's experience in building flagship supercars for German automakers. This latest project could suffer the same fate as the M100 and i8 CSi programs. But if it is approved, it could yield both coupe and convertible versions, with the first slated to surface at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017 and reach dealerships in 2019.
2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive is an M7 by any other name
Mon, Feb 8 2016Have you been waiting for BMW to release a more potent version of the new 7 Series? Try 600 horsepower on for size and forget all about the famous M badge. The new flagship performance sedan from Munich is the 2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive. Alpina is Bimmer's tuner of choice, and it designs customized features to integrate precisely with the factory build. The B7's 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is massaged to deliver a nice, round 600 horsepower, and a torque figure nearly as impressive at 590 pound-feet available from just 3,000 rpm. All that muscle is channeled through an eight-speed automatic to all four wheels (as you might have guessed from the new xDrive handle). The result is an Autobahn-blitzing 0-60 time quoted at just 3.6 seconds – 0.8 seconds quicker than its predecessor – and a top speed estimated at 193 miles per hour. Those would have been considered supercar figures not that long ago, but are delivered here in a luxury sedan as big as they come. They also stand up pretty well to the forced-induction eight-cylinder competition in the Audi S8 Plus, Jaguar XJR, Maserati Quattroporte GTS, and Mercedes-AMG S63. The Audi produces a bit more power but less torque, the Mercedes does the opposite, and the Jaguar and Maserati are left in the dust. Only the S8 Plus dares claim a quicker 0-60 time, and even then it's only said to be a tenth quicker. (The Mercedes-AMG S65 boasts much higher output from its V12, but without an all-wheel drive system capable of handling all its muscle, it's a fair bit slower off the line.) Keeping all that momentum under control is an air suspension with adaptive dampers, active roll bars, and four-wheel steering. It's all mounted to 20-inch wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber and packing oversized brakes measuring 15.5 inches at the front (with four-piston fixed calipers) and 14.5 inches (with floating calipers) at the back. Of course it also benefits from all the advancements that the Bavarian automaker developed for the latest 7 Series, but takes things a step further with a specific aero kit and an interior decked out in even more upscale leather and trim. The finished product may not wear an M7 badge as so many have called for from BMW's flagship sedan series over the years. But the Alpina name carries a cachet all its own and has for the past 50 years now – which is a few years longer than BMW M GmbH has been around.
