BMW 5 Series GT spied in the snow
Sat, Dec 19 2015Tuesday, December 22 might be the official start of winter, but as the northern hemisphere hunkers down for the darkest and coldest days of the year, the automotive testing community is beginning its annual migration to the snow-covered roads of Sweden. For BMW, that means heading north with the new 5 Series Gran Turismo. This isn't the first time we've seen the hunchbacked five-door, as our spies captured it about six weeks ago testing in Germany. This new round of images doesn't reveal a great deal more about the 5GT, but it's further evidence that BMW is moving into the next stage of testing. This still looks like it'll be a more stylish evolution of the original 5GT idea. And as our spies report, we can still expect a significant weight savings, too. BMW increases i3 price by $1,075 for 2015
Thu, Jan 29 2015The BMW i3 did well in its first year on the market, selling 6,02 units in the US and 16,052 units worldwide. For 2015, it gets total price increase of $1,075, partially reflecting new standard equipment that was formerly an option and a bump in its destination cost. The 2014 starting price of $41,350 becomes $42,400 for 2015, an extra $1,050, and the destination increase of $25 to $950 makes the out-the-door price $43,350. The range-extended model goes up by the same amount, from $45,200 last year to $46,250 this year. After destination, it's $47,200 out the door. For 2015, DC Fast Charging is included, no longer a $700 option, thanks to the expansion of the fast-charging network through a collaboration between BMW, Volkswagen and Chargepoint. Beyond that, satellite radio and heated seats migrate to the standard features list. We have a feeling none of this will hurt the plug-in car's sales momentum this year. BMW says 80 percent of i3 plug-in EV buyers come from other brands
Sat, Jun 7 2014BMW is feeling continued good vibes from its recently launched i sub-brand of plug-in vehicles. The German automaker, which started selling its i3 battery-electric vehicle in Europe late last year, is finding better-than-expected demand for both the i3 and the i8 plug-in hybrid, Automotive News Europe says, citing an interview with BMW executive Ian Robertson. The i3 is attracting a lot of new blood, too. Robertson said about 80 percent of new i3 owners were not previously Ultimate Driving Machine loyalists, indicating the curiosity factor for the company's new plug-in models runs high, Robertson says. BMW has sold more than 3,000 i3 vehicles since debuting the model in Europe last November. In April, the company boosted daily production of the i3 from its German factory to about 100 units from 70. Read more from Robertson here. Europe's largest markets for the i3 are the UK, Germany and Norway. In the US, BMW sold 336 i3 vehicles in May, its first month of sales here. The i3 was recently rated to go 81 miles on a single charge when it has an electric engine only.
