THIS IS A NO RESERVE LISTING.

This is my excellent 1998 BMW 540i Sport 6-speed with an AC Schnitzer M5 body kit, M5 wheels and performance upgrades.  With an estimated 350 horsepower, killer looks and excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, this car is really exceptional.  You can look at this car one of two ways: either this is the best 540i Sport 6-speed you'll ever find, or darn close to an M5 for a lot less money.

This car has 109,811 miles but it looks and drives like a car with 40,000 miles.  You'll see me use many superlatives throughout this description, because of the truly excellent condition of this superb car.

I am a huge BMW enthusiast and I've owned nearly every significant BMW produced in the past 30 years.  This particular car is hands-down, one of the finest BMWs I've ever driven.  The looks, the power, the sound, the brakes, the handling, the comfort and reliability are all just superb.  This is about as close as you can get to an M5 without spending huge money.

This car has been serviced and upgraded by a nationally-renowned BMW specialty shop in our area.  The man who worked on the car is a worldwide BMW expert and has been called on to write numerous articles for "Roundel" the BMW Car Club of America's magazine.  So you know that all the work done to the car was done right, and no corners were cut.

This car has the following factory equipment:

  • 4.4L V8 engine
  • 6-speed manual transmission
  • factory Sport package
  • power moonroof
  • leather and heated Sport seats
  • AM/FM CD and cassette premium audio system with DSP
  • automatic climate control with A/C (blows cold)
  • anti-lock brakes
  • Dynamic Stability Program
  • front and side airbags

In addition, the car has the following upgrades:

  • AC Schnitzer M5 body kit
  • UUC short shift kit (amazingly tight, short throws)
  • lowered performance suspension
  • 18" M5 wheels with Goodyear Eagle GT tires
  • AFE Magnum Force cold air intake
  • JET performance tuning chip
  • OBX-R stainless steel dual exhaust
  • "angel eyes" HID headlights and updated signals at all four corners
  • cross-drilled brake rotors on all four wheels

I also have the original books and owner's manuals in their original case.

This car is in truly outstanding condition.  The paint and body are excellent, the paint is gorgeous and the body is straight and clean.  There is very little in the way of stone nicks, etc- this car is superbly clean.  The 18" M5 wheels have no curb rash and they're in great condition. The AC Schnitzer M5 body kit fits perfectly and the pieces have super high-quality paint to match the car.

The interior of this car is nearly unbelievable- there is literally no wear and no signs of age.  The leather seats are nearly like new with no wear, and the interior plastics, upholstery and wood are superb.  The interior of this car look like that of a 2 year old car.

The mechanical condition of this 540i is excellent.  The engine, transmission, suspension, etc are working great. The car has no known mechanical issues and it drives exceptionally well.  The engine is smooth and hugely powerful.  The engine sounds outstanding with a great V8 rumble due to the cold-air intake and stainless free-flow exhaust system.  The handling is amazingly tight and sharp without being harsh.  Everything is "tight" on the car, the suspension, steering, brakes, transmission, etc.  There is nothing loose or sloppy about the car- it is precise, tight and solid in every way- again it feels like a car with 40,000 miles.

This is a 1998 car and as such it is not brand new.  While this is a great car, please expect normal issues of wear and tear consistent with the age of the car.  This is a list of anything and everything I know of that is wrong with the car: the center display which shows the onboard computer/ odometer is hard to read (common for these cars), the airbag light is on, and the sunroof does not open.  That's it.  This is a superb, great-condition performance machine that you'll enjoy every minute of driving.

The car currently has 109,811 miles but this will increase as I'm planning to take this car for a trip this weekend.  Incidentally, this car is totally reliable, dependable and fully mechanically sound.  There are absolutely no known mechanical problems, and I'd trust this car to drive to California and back.

This BMW has a clean and clear OH title ready to transfer.

You can fly in to Cleveland (CLE) and drive this car home, or you can have the car shipped.  Please call Angels Moving Autos at 530 245 0481 for a shipping quote.

This car is kept in my garage in Willoughby, OH.

BMW brings laser headlights and HUD helmet to motorcycles

Tue, Jan 5 2016

BMW is complementing its array of cutting-edge tech at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show with the ConnectedRide concept that adapts automotive innovations to the motorcycle world. To highlight the two-wheeled future, the company modified a K1600 GTL with a laser headlight and controls for a helmet-integrated head-up display. The result could make riding safer if these developments ever come to market. Some of BMW's latest models like the i8 and 7 Series can already cut through the darkness with laser headlights, and this K1600 GTL brings that technology to motorcycles. The bright light can shine down the road up to 1,969 feet, which the company claims is about twice as far as a conventional unit. The additional visual range gives riders extra time to evaluate what's ahead at night and could make for a safer journey. The concept laser headlight on the bike is only a feasibility test for now, but preliminary development is underway. However, the lights might need modification to see production in the US because BMW had to turn down the power on the units in the i8 to get FDA approval, according to BMW Blog. BMW also wants to make riders safer through a helmet-integrated HUD that ensures they never need to take their eyes off the road. While other companies already offer similar products, this solution maximizes the available information. Through controls at a person's left hand on the handlebars, a user can select displays of current speed, selected gear, tire pressure, oil and fuel level, and even speed limits, and the system displays the desired info right in front of the wearer's eye. A front-mounted camera can record the trip, and a rear-mounted one can simulate a rearview mirror. Real-world production of the HUD is still a few years away, but BMW says future versions could incorporate vehicle-to-vehicle communications to let the system receive hazard warnings, too. BMW Motorrad will be displaying two innovations at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on 6-9 January 2016. Laser light for motorcycles and a helmet with a head-up display will be presented, setting new standards of motorcycle safety, along with a technical outlook of how they may be employed in series models of the future. BMW i3 range-extender lawsuit supports Tesla's store argument

Mon, May 23 2016

Tesla's argument that it needs to own its stores in order to sell its electric vehicles and give customers better information is about to get bolstered by an unlikely source: BMW. The German automaker is the subject of a class-action lawsuit stemming from the performance of the range-extended version of its i3 plug-in. And at least one green-car advocate and i3 owner says the problem could have been avoided by better education at BMW dealerships. The lawsuit was filed in California by some owners of the BMW i3 REx, i.e. the version that's equipped with a gas-powered "range extender," according to Green Car Reports. The issue is that, when the car's battery starts running low and the powertrain is subjected to extended stress, such as a long uphill highway stretch or a fully loaded vehicle, the car can slow from highway speeds to as slow as 45 miles per hour without warning. The claim states that the vehicle can post a danger as a result, while BMW has declined comment, citing pending litigation. Meanwhile, Tom Moloughney, owner of the first BMW i3 REx to be sold in the US, says the problem might rest at the dealership level. Moloughney says that if dealers explained the car's mechanics better – especially the fact that the range extender is essentially a 34-horsepower, two-cylinder motorcycle engine whose power is limited – drivers would be better informed about what could happen when the battery power is sapped at highway speeds. While Tesla EVs don't have the same sort of REx powertrain, this argument nicely dovetails with what Tesla Motors has been saying for a long time, that its cars should only be sold at company-owned stores because third-party dealers are less likely to understand and explain the nuances of electric vehicles. No word on whether Elon Musk's lobbyists are getting together with lawyers representing the Ultimate Driving Machine. Next BMW X1 caught on flatbed

Tue, 17 Sep 2013

The X1 had been around for four years before it was added to BMW's US lineup, so it isn't all that surprising that a new version of the company's smallest Sport Activity Vehicle is already in the works. Captured in transit on the back of a flatbed truck, these spy shots give us our first look at the next-gen X1 - codenamed F48 - which is expected to debut around 2015.
While the camouflage does a good job of obscuring most of the styling elements, we definitely see evidence of the X1's new platform. Elements like the loss of the long nose and a noticeably shrunken dash-axle gap (just compare this spy shot picture to this one from our X1 review), are good indicators that the next X1 will move to the new front-wheel-drive platform BMW is using for the new Mini and 1 Series GT. Aside from this, the overall shape is very similar to the current design, but we're sure it will pull many cues from the updated range of BMW products.
