Putting my '95 318ti up for sale. I've had this car for about two years now and it has never let me down. It was a Virginia commuter for most of its life so there's virtually no rust on the undercarriage and some minor rust bubbling on the rear passenger fender lip (pictured). It's an 18 year old vehicle so the paint and clear coat have seen better days. The windshield isn't the best either but it did the job for me since I mainly drove from Philadelphia to the suburbs for work. There are a few dings and dents that I tried to get the best pictures possible of them. This was my fourth E36 and still proves to be the best one yet. Within a month of having it, I replaced the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing bushings since they were beginning to weep. The oil has been changed every 5k with Mobil 1 and I've changed the transmission fluid with Redline MTL twice since I've owned it. I always run 89 octane/plus gas as recommended and I get about 32mpg highway when driving conservatively. I also replaced the front control arms, bushings, tie rods, and struts with Ti valved Koni units from BavAuto. The rear trailing arm bushings, shocks, and shock mounts were replaced as well. That being said, the car handles quite well and still feels tight. I'll be flat out honest and say I DO NOT have receipts for the work because most of it was done by myself and my father who was an ASE certified mechanic for 25 years so please don't ask me for them. I'm very passionate about these cars and I do my due diligence to make sure everything gets done correctly. The tires were brand new when I purchased the car and they still have plenty of tread on them. No burning, no funny wear patterns, just right. The car had a new radiator installed when I purchased it due to the typical separation of the plastic expansion tank from the fins. E36 folks know what I mean. The temperature gauge stays at 12 'o clock even with the A/C on in traffic and I installed a clutch fan on it just for that extra insurance. The exhaust was in awful shape and after the muffler fell off on the highway, I had nearly the entire system replaced at Meineke. I deleted the resonator since it opened like a can of sardines and added a Dynomax (Walker) muffler for some sound. Every electrical switch is in working order with the exception of the cruise control. Apparently, that fuse is shared with the cyclops brake light and I just haven't had the time/patience to figure it out. The M42 starts up every time and idles smoothly. The transmission shifts well and the clutch has plenty of life left in it. The A/C blows nice and cold and the heat will make you sweat. All in all, this is a fun yet economical little car to get you from A to B. I've done my best to keep it in top mechanical shape and it shows when you're behind the wheel. The car is located in Philadelphia but can be driven a reasonable distance within the tri-state area for a fee. Please, do not hesitate to message me with any questions or concerns about the vehicle. You can also text me at 732-586-6200 at any time or call after 6:30pm on weekdays and 10am or later on weekends. Good luck and happy bidding!

BMW i3 starts near $35,000; NA first deliveries January 2014

Mon, 08 Jul 2013

While in Germany at the first early pre-production drives of the hotly anticipated BMW i3, BMW people finally hinted at a price ballpark. Numbers being tossed around by pundits have actually been pretty close to what BMW is discussing internally - between $35,000 and just over $40,000. We have been assured now that the base price, should one choose to buy and not lease in the Euro zone, is just over 35,000 euro, with some big taxes included in that price. In the US, the starting price for the fully EV plug-in version should be $34,500 or right thereabouts. In addition to new pricing, we've also gotten our best-yet look at the i3, with the freshly uncovered spy shots you see here.
European deliveries begin in November of this year for the fully electric version of the rear-wheel-drive i3 with 168-horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The e-motor mounted over the rear axle is supplied with energy by the 22-kWh lithium-ion battery pallet under the passenger compartment. Recharging happens in any of three ways: public or personal garage plug-in charge station (garage version not included in the price), the onboard system's Pro Eco mode that adds resistance to the drivetrain in a type of rolling brake energy recuperation, or through the normal brake energy and off-throttle coasting regeneration more common to EVs. Range on a full charge of this drivetrain is said to be upwards of 100 miles under hyper-miling conditions.
Perhaps the best bit of news is that the alternative, range-extending, two-cylinder 600cc engine supplied by BMW Motorrad for the hybrid version of the i3 - mounted in the rear together with the e-motor - will add only 2,000 euros in Europe and about $2,000 in the US. This is a range-doubling solution that could have brought a much higher price gouge, so thank you, BMW. The hybrid e-drive i3 version arrives a couple months after the full-EV launch version. Remember that, unlike the very similar system for the Chevrolet Volt, the system in the i3 supplies no mechanical torque to the driven axle and is only used as a generator (a system BMW first used last year in the 1 Series-based Active ). The US is seen as the clear number one market for the i3.

Hyundai, BMW in plant talks with Mexican officials

Fri, 27 Sep 2013

BMW and Hyundai may be joining the rush for the border that has already seen Nissan, Honda and Mazda begin factory construction in Mexico, while Ford and General Motors have both made significant investments in their Mexican facilities. BMW's interest in Mexico has been apparent for some time, and while we'd heard grumblings about Hyundai's move into Latin America some time ago, the last we heard about it was in 2009.
This new move, reported by Bloomberg, doesn't get specific on which models will be produced south of the Rio Grande, and as neither automakers' spokespeople responded to the business site's request for statements, all we really have to go on are the statements of Mexico's Economy Minister, Ildefonso Guajardo: "I cannot talk for them, but I think that starting 2014 we'll have new announcements. At least for one." Which manufacturer that will be remains anyone's guess, although judging by all the recent scuttlebutt that's been going around, the smart money seems to be on BMW. We'll stay with this one.

Former BMW M boss and Maserati CEO killed in freak motorcycle accident

Mon, 19 Aug 2013

It's a tragic coincidence that on the same weekend the BMW M4 Coupe Concept was introduced in Monterey, one of the men most integral to BMW's M and Motorsports divisions, Karl-Heinz Kalbfell, was killed in England. Kalbfell, a vintage motorcycle enthusiast, was set to compete in the Lansdowne Classic Series at Brands Hatch and had an accident during a practice session. After going wide at Druids Corner and falling, he was hit by a competitor following close behind and died of his injuries after being transported to hospital.
Kalbfell, an engineer, began his career at BMW in 1977 in the communications department; a decade later he was chairman of BMW M GmbH, overseeing development of some of the cars responsible for the myth of M. In 1994 he was named chairman of BMW Motorsport, and his cap full of feathers includes getting the BMW V12 into the McLaren F1, getting the BMW V8 into two Morgan cars, along with developing BMW's Formula One engine and return to the sport. Not incidentally, he also assumed leadership of Project Rolls-Royce after BMW bought the British marque in 1998, which means he oversaw the Goodwood factory upfit and the creation of the Phantom.
He left Rolls-Royce for a brief stint at Fiat, heading Alfa Romeo and Maserati, then went into consulting for clients like Lotus and Paragon, who built the Artega GT. As Autocar notes, Kalbfell "had an abiding sense that customers needed to be attracted to cars by their aura and reputation, not just their engineering." He will be missed.
