1994 BMS 325IS.  I have had this car for almost the last 10 years, using it for summer commuting and the occasional autocross and track day.  In nice condition with a great color combination, but has a few things that may need attention.

GOOD

  • Rust Free.  Originally a Texas car and I have stored it every winter since.
  • 95,000 Miles
  • Nicely optioned, almost all features work (see details below)
  • Pretty nice interior and paint
  • Sport Package car, with Sport Seats and BBS wheels.
  • 3.91 Rear Gear ratio with Limited Slip Differential.
  • Handles like a dream.

BAD
  • Engine has bent valves due to a botched shift..  Car runs and drives but has a lopey idle and sound of misfire in the exhaust note.  Runs pretty well, considering, and is strong off-idle.  Two cylinders are low on compression.  You can drive it home, but will eventually need to rework the head.  The check engine light is not on, it just idles rough..
  • Left side of car has dents in door and rear quarter and maybe a little in fender.  It went gently into the tire wall at a track day and got pushed in.  (See images).  Not scratched but big smooth dents.  One could live with it as-is or go visit a paintless dent repair shop.
  • Transmission leaks one drop each trip.  Leak appears to be front (engine side).  I top it off every oil change and it is not a big deal (for me).
  • The radio is aftermarket Alpine unit.  AM/FM works but once it refused to eject the CD, so If I wanted to hear CD it would only play that one.  After several months, on a whim, I pressed 'Eject' again and it came right out.  I am afraid to insert a CD and cannot say that the CD will reliably eject.
  • Stock muffler is rusted internally and louder than stock.  Outside is fine, it does not leak but has a wonderful deep loud exhaust note.
  • The flashlight in the glove box does not hold a charge.
  • I lost the hold-down wing-nut thing for the spare tire.

CONDITION
  • There are no diagnostic codes set for any of the electronics.
  • Brakes are recent and work perfectly.  Upgraded Hawk HP+ pads all around and Brembo OEM rotors in front.
  • Suspension and steering in great condition.  Has recent front lower control arms and bushings as well as upgraded steel ball joints.  Rear trailing arm bushings have been replaced and are in good condition.  Has H&R springs and Bilstein Sport (yellow) shocks.  The car sits lower than stock and handles way better, still ahs a nice ride.
  • Headliner has been replaced (no sagging headliner)
  • Sunroof works well opens and closes, but does not tilt.
  • AC and Auto Climate control work well.  The AC is the coldest I have ever experienced.
  • ABS and SRS (airbag system) in working condition.
  • Drivers door tweeter for radio is missing.
  • All lights on the vehicle function as they should.  This includes exterior, interior, gauge and dash light, vanity lights, dome and reading lights, switch backlighting.
  • All gauges and indicator lights work.
  • Leather is in pretty good shape, getting dried out in a few places but no rips or tears.  BMW used high quality leather on these cars.  Worst place is the driver's armrest (see images).
  • There is no gasoline odor from the fuel pump sending unit because the unit and gaskets were replaced.
  • A roll bar was installed in the car for a  time -- remaining holes have been sealed with self adhesive rubber roofing membrane inside, acrylic roofing sealer outside with a final coat of automotive undercoat.
  • There are slits in the carpet ahead of the back seats where the roll bar was. (See images).  Easily covered with floor mats (included).
  • Clutch is good.
  • There is play in the shifter linkage typical of  BMWs of this era (particularly the E36 chassis).  Works fine, but not as tight as newer cars.
  • Power seats work properly.
  • Tires are Yokohama A509.  They have plenty of tread remaining (7/32") and have plenty of service life remaining.   However, they are not performance tires and are at least 10 years old.
  • Wheels are true.  See images for cosmetic condition.  Full size spare is a new 'sticker'  tire mounted on BMW E36 Convertible wheel.
  • New Battery. Just replaced under warranty this week (August 15).
  • Express up / down windows work properly (both sides)
  • Horn, Cruise control, wipers work properly.  The wipers on this BMW are the best I have ever seen.
  • Has upgraded water pump with metal impeller and has upgraded  metal thermostat housing. (These are common reliability upgrades for these cars).
  • There is a Canadian quarter stuck in the coin holder slot.
  • Jack and tire iron included as well as the tool for the BBS center caps.
  • Two keys and Original owners manual are included.

BMW 6 Series Convertible gets a little work done for 2015

Sat, 02 Aug 2014

Truth be told, I've never really found the modern BMW 6 Series to be a particularly attractive car, in Coupe, Convertible, or sedan Gran Coupe forms. This current generation certainly looks a whole lot better than the Bangle-fied Six that came before it to my eyes, but on the whole, I find much of the car's design to be fussy and awkward. There's a new 6 Series on the way, scheduled to arrive sometime in 2017 or 2018, but to hold us over until then, BMW is freshening its current range, as evidenced by this convertible prototype our trusty spies recently caught testing.
Will the changes to the current 6 Series be an improvement? Perhaps. Up front, there are restyled headlamps and a new front bumper, and at the rear, BMW has redesigned the LED taillamps to bring them more in line with the rest of the company's offerings. Aside from those modest tweaks, we don't expect much more to change on the Big Six - the interior will likely carry over with some minor tweaks (or new colors), and it's possible the powertrains could be massaged gently for gains in either power, efficiency, or both.
Whether you think this new look is pretty or not, this freshened 6 Series will likely debut sometime next year, while BMW's engineers and designers craft the all-new version. See it from several angles in our gallery, above.

Looking back at 84 years of BMW roadsters

Tue, 01 Oct 2013

Today BMW is a top player in the luxury vehicle market, but it wasn't always so. With origins as an airplane engine builder early in the 20th Century, it broke into the automotive industry when it bought Automobilwerk Eisenach in 1928. That German manufacturer was licensed to build the Austin Seven under the name Dixi DA-1, which could be had in a roadster body style. In 1929, BMW dropped the Dixi name, and by 1936, it was building a car it designed in-house, the 326 sedan. That was followed by the company's first roadster of its own design, the swoopy two-door 327 of 1937.
XCAR picks up there, and gives a history of BMW's iconic roadsters starting with the 327, ending with today's Z4, and covering everything in between - including the beautiful post-war 507 of 1957 and the funky, plastic-bodied 1989 Z1.
The video, which we've included below, is a good history lesson and a great chance to see a bunch of classic BMWs, spanning 84 years, all driven back to back within the safe confines of a racetrack. When you have a spare 20 minutes, go ahead and take some time to watch it.

BMW to announce location of new plant in Mexico in July

Tue, 20 May 2014

Volkswagen manufactures in Mexico. Soon Audi will as well, and Mercedes-Benz is said to be working on a deal to assemble some of its cars at a Nissan plant in Mexico too. That leaves BMW out of the mix of German automakers building cars South of the Border, but that may soon be rectified, as well.
According to Automotive News, the Bavarian automaker is preparing to announce the site of its first Mexican assembly plant as soon as July, now just two months away. BMW already builds cars for North American consumption at its plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, but has reportedly been keen to capitalize on cheaper labor and the benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement to supply vehicles to the United States and Canada especially.
When BMW does announce the site of the plant - reportedly narrowed down to either Hidalgo or San Luis Potosi - it is tipped to work its way up to 100,000 vehicles per year at the new location, potentially to include the 3 Series as well as smaller, front-drive models, including Minis.
