History: The magic of a name: BMW. The Bavarian company has been building Ultimate Driving Machines since 1929 but prior to that built aircraft engines. They have produced many fascinating cars from the diminutive Isetta to the breathtaking 507 roadster. Every BMW shares a heritage that makes it built to be an Autobahn burner. This particular BMW belonged to my Grandather's collection and we both shared a passion for BMW's and belonged to the BMW club.

My Auction: I will attempt to describe this fine automobile to the best of my ability. All used cars have flaws, especially 29 year old ones so please be realistic in your expectations. I will point out anything that stands out or that you can't see in the pictures as I believe anyone who doesn't isn't being thorough with their auction. Please ask all questions BEFORE you bid. Please view the link to over 100 additional pictures I have posted on flickr.com before you bid, some of them have captions and I want you to know exactly what you are getting. Please read my entire auction carefully BEFORE you bid. Also please be respectful of my auction, these cost real money that I have to work hard for just like you do. Please make sure you have the money in place BEFORE you bid and that you have asked you significant other or whoever you need permission from to purchase an automobile before you bid. I will not cancel your bid for any reason or excuse you give me so if you are one of those guys please don't bid on my auction. Thanks and good luck bidding!

Link to over 150 pictures:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/104672224@N02/ If you click on the individual photos they will get larger. Next click on the diagonal arrows icon that is second from the right. This will supersize the pictures and you can now use the left and right arrows on either side of the screen to scroll through the pictures. Also before you supersize the photos scroll through them and you can see the captions this way.

Exterior Condition: This BMW 318i is absolutely stunning in Baltic Blue metallic. The paint is as smooth as glass and shines like a mirror. When you run your hand over the finish is has that soft feel just like a new car in the showroom. It has a few stone chips and minor knicks that you would expect for a car this age. There is a small rust bubble on the passenger front fender that I point to in one of the photos and a medium sized ding in the left front fender. Otherwise the car does not have any dents or major scratches. The window glass is all chip and crack free. The passenger taillight does have a small crack but water does not get in. All of the weatherstripping looks brand new. The wheels look terrific without any curb rash and have new matching Michelin tires. All of the emblems are in great condition and are very shiny. You could eat off of the door jambs and even the wheel wells are very clean. Overall this car presents excellent and the fact that is only has 61K miles is reflected in it's beautiful condition.

Interior Condition: The interior is covered in beautiful pearl cloth and is very 80's time period and I just love it! The headliner is in perfect condition, it does not sag and has no stains. Really the only place the interior can be reasonably faulted is the drivers seat is a little worn. There are still suppliers out there that you can get factory looking new seat covers from in the same material. All of the other seats look great and the back seat doesn't look like anyone ever sat back there. The carpets are super clean with no stains. I purchased a brand net set of black floor mats for it. There are no broken or missing parts on the interior. The dashboard does have a crack that I point to in one of the photos but it is pretty minor. This car has never been smoked in. The trunk is spotlessly clean and the engine compartment is fully detailed.

Mechanically: This BMW runs and drives great! In fact we just took it on our local BMW clubs fall tour. We put over 500 miles on the car in two days and it ran flawlessly as you would expect of a 61K mile car. The brakes have a nice feel to them with no pulsating or anything when you stop. Since it has new tires it goes down the highway as smooth as glass with no vibration or shaking in the car and no shaking of the steering wheel either. The engine just purrs and the transmission shifts as it should. This car is as tight as a drum and doesn't have any rattles. The suspension is quiet over bumps and doesn't make any weird noises. The exhaust is also quiet. The heat and air conditioning work. All of the buttons and switches work as they should in the interior. There are no warning lights illuminated on the dash.

On 1980's BMW's they had an inspection light that illuminates when you first start the car. There are several green dots and as the cars computer determines it needs service or an oil change the green dots go away one by one and finally a light that says "inspection" comes on. This BMW has all it green lights lit and won't need servicing any time soon.

I can only find two things wrong with this car:

1. The radio only works on AM and or with the tape player. For some reason FM does not work. All of the other buttons on the radio work. We have been using one of those cassette adapters to listen to Pandora on a smartphone. I will include a used newer style radio with a CD player for you to install if you wish. I can't vouch for whether or not that radio works right but you can have it with the car.

2. The gas gauge sticks sometimes. Usually it will read full when you start the car and then read the actual amount of gas in the tank when you start driving for a while. The car has not been driven much prior to our road trip with the BMW club but this condition seems to be getting better the more the car is driven.

Basically this car drives just like a new 1984 BMW 318i drove like back in 1984. I would not hesitate to drive this car cross country.

Additional Notes:

-This BMW is sold as-is with no warranty expressed or implied.

-I have some pretty neat stuff with the car. I have the original bill of sale from Anderson Motors in Crystal Lake Il.. I also have the original window sticker for the car. I have the original owners manual as well. See the photos of these items!

-I have a clean and clear Illinois title in my late Grandfathers name and he has signed off on it. If you live in a state that requires a notary obviously this will not be possible.

-I have one key to the car.

-The date was not set on my camera, but all of the pictures were taken on 10-7-13

-You can fly in and drive home if you would like. I live about 30 minutes from either Chicago O'Hare or Chicago Midway airports.

-If you are having the car shipped I will assist your shipper in loading it.

-Please don't contact me asking the reserve price. It is unfair to other bidders. The car is priced to sell so if you want it get in the game and bid and have some fun!!! That is what owning a BMW 318i is all about: FUN FUN FUN!

-There is no "buy it now" price, I will be letting the auction run it's course.

-You are more then welcome to come test drive the BMW before you bid. Feel free to bring your mechanic as I am not one.

-By bidding on the BMW you are entering into a contract to purchase an automobile. This is not the first right of refusal.

-I require a $200 deposit via PayPal within 48 hours of auction close. You can pay the balance in one of two ways within 7 days. If you are picking up the car you can pay me CASH. This means you will be counting out greenbacks and I will be handing you the title and the keys. If you are having the car shipped you can pay with a bank to bank wire transfer. I will not accept any checks of any kind. You cannot pay the entire amount with Paypal, that is only for the deposit.

-Only 61K original miles!!!!!!!!!

-If you have zero or negative feedback please contact me before you bid or I will be forced to cancel your bid. Also if you have positive feedback but have not had any feedbacks in the last year please contact me before you bid.

-If you have questions about the car please feel free to e-mail me on Ebay before you bid or better yet feel free to call me at 630-334-6974. My name is Joe and I will be happy to talk to you about the car.

-By next week you could be styling and smiling in this sporty coupe!

----Good luck to all and happy bidding!!!!

BMW reacquires original factory as classic center

Thu, 27 Feb 2014

BMW was barely two years old when it started manufacturing airplane engines in a factory on Moosacher Strasse in Munich. Two years after that, it sold the factory to Knorr-Bremse AG, a leading manufacturer of brakes for trains and commercial vehicles, and BMW moved into a new facility on Lerchenauer Strasse. There it expanded into the industrial giant we know today, building engines for cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and planes. It's taken the better part of a century to get that original factory back, but that's exactly what BMW has done, reacquiring the expanded facility from Knorr-Bremse this month.
The factory on Moonsacher Strasse will now serve as the headquarters for BMW Group Classic, the division that handles archives and historical vehicles for BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce. From there, just a stone's throw from corporate headquarters and its main plant (as well as BMW Welt and the BMW Museum), the classic division's operations will include a restoration workshop, vintage parts store, the company's archives, administration as well as a place to hold events. In addition, there will be an exhibition space for historical vehicles from the company's considerable collection.
At the heart of the new/old campus is the gatehouse, which is a protected heritage site and will serve as a gateway into the company's history. Read the full details in the press release below.

BMW i8 official images leak ahead of Frankfurt [w/video]

Tue, 03 Sep 2013

The new BMW i8 plug-in electric supercar isn't set to make its official debut until September 10, when it will glide onto the Frankfurt Motor Show stage amidst a sea of flash photography. Of course, that isn't so true in today's world, where debuts are always preceded (often carefully) by "leaks."
Take this trio of images of the BMW i8 - there's just enough of the exterior on display in the profile shot to draw attention, without showing important styling points that might be present on the front or back of the car. The same goes for the video attached below. The cabin shot is cool, but isn't particularly earth-shattering when it comes to BMW interiors. As for the skeletal shot, we can see the 1.5-liter, turbocharged engine positioned between the rear axles, the battery pack found in what would be the transmission tunnel and the front-mounted electric motors.
We'll have a full set of live images when the BMW i8 makes its debut in Frankfurt next week. Until then, have a look in the gallery and at the video below, and let us know what you think of BMW's next big thing.

2014 BMW 4 Series Convertible [w/video]

Thu, 20 Feb 2014

Here it is, the fifth generation of BMW's 3 Series Convertible - only this one begins with a "4," having been rechristened as a droptop version of the new 4 Series Coupe. With thirty years of work on this same recipe and having gotten it so right for much of that time, the Munich compact premium convertible has been a WYSIWYG affair for decades: once you saw its sedan paradigm, you knew what it was going to look like in roofless two-door form, and what you saw is exactly what you got.
It is ridiculous to think that BMW would choose this new model and its new nomenclature to muck things up. The new car has, though, gotten larger and roomier, and even though it's now part of the racier coupe division within the company's compact line, it has gotten more, shall we say, mature. Driving even further away from the days when handsomely tipped bartenders could work their way into one, The Ultimate Tanning Machine had shed even more elan, going instead for elegance and an attitude befitting its $49,675 starting price (including $925 for destination).
It strikes a few odd notes, but what it does best, it still does better than anything else out there in its price range.
