This is the 6th 2002 I've owned and it has become my favorite! She's a '76 model refinished in fresh Malaga paint.

I built this little hot rod to be my weekend toy. I wanted to pay homage to vintage racers and think I pulled it off.  I originally bought the car with a TON of reciepts including original invoice! She's fresh out of her restoration and I've put maybe 270 miles on her since.

BODY & INTERIOR
I've got a lot of time in her and I think it shows. I repaired all rust, which really wasn't much, including both sills, front floors and frame rails. (The spare tire well has a soft spot in it from slight rust - this is the ONLY rust left.) I removed the lower molding and WELDED each and every hole! I also removed the rear driving lights and front side reflectors.  (Those were welded in as well.) I installed turbo flares (ABS plastic so they're not brittle) which is quite a job when you want to do it right!

The interior has new carpeting, new vintage racing seats with custom lower mounts, and refurbished door cards. I also threw in a new Momo Prototipo Steering Wheel. You'll notice I removed the center console which makes it look much more "purposeful" - the look reminds me of a Porsche 914/6 race car I fell in love with. I fitted the earlier round-style shift boot which required the fabrication of a mount on the transmission tunnel. The shift knob is the BMW wood knob.

I also installed an early rear bumper doing away with the "back porch-of-a-bumper" it had. For lighting I installed H4 headlamps which really throw the light and are a great improvement over stock lamps.

The front bumper was also removed and in it's place I installed CIBIE Oscar Driving Lamps - these are getting stupid hard to find and EXPENSIVE! The bracket I made for them can be slid out if wanted. (I did this in case I needed to slide the stock bumper back in for inspection.) The car also features the flat front turn signals which are equally scarce and NOT cheap.

The hood hold downs are old-school rubber latches - I did away with the hold down bar and mechanism.

The car sits on Minilite replicas in 15X7.5 size with 0 offset - the grip is out of hand for this light little dude! Tires are new 205/50/15.

SUSPENSION

The car is suspended on H&R Sport Springs dampened by KYB Gas-Adjusts. I also replaced the majority of steering gear under the car: New front control arms, new tie rods and center link, and new ball joints. I also installed urethane sway bar bushing which keep her darn flat when cornering!

BRAKES
The brakes are stock units with new pads and new front calipers. All four corners are served through Korman stainless steel brake lines with new fluid.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine is the tried and true M10 4cyl with a Weber 32/36 carb carrying a water choke. The air cleaner is a Pipercross foam cleaner. I installed a "sync link" on the carb which converts it from progressive to synchronous operation - both carb barrels open at the the same time giving it great grunt when you "get on it" in 3rd. The ODO indicates 62957 miles.

The engine is mounted on Ireland Engineering urethane engine mounts as well as IE urethane transmission mount. All smog stuff has been eliminated and I cleaned up a lot of the under-hood mess.

The transmission is the stock 4speed box that is as stout of a 4 speed box as one can find - It's filled with Red Line MTL. I installed a new slave cylinder as well.

The ignition features electronic ignitor in the distributor, 8mm Ireland Engineering plug wires, and a Crane ignition box. The radiator is from an e21 and was a kit from Bimmer Parts Co. The car runs cool as a cucumber even on the hottest of days!

I installed new OEM under-hood decals including a new VIN plaque I'm in the process of installing. (Makes the engine compartment look new!) You'll also find a Hella twin air horn under the hood as well. (Crazy loud!) The engine runs steady as a rock, idles very well and sounds great through it's "newer" OEM exhaust. The whole car was just painted last month in BMW Malaga which shows great with the gold wheels. No smoke on deccel or accel.

TO FINISH
I ran into some time constraints with this project and so the rear seating area is unfinished. I originally left this area unfinished to install a roll bar but could not source one at the time. I do have a rear seat for the car which was not installed at the time the photos were taken. The CIBIE Oscars are not hooked up but the car does have an OEM fog lamp switch in the console (NOT the "dummy" knob) which did operate some small Hellas that were originally on the car.

BMW Hack: the auto industry's big cyber-security warning sign [w/video]

Sat, Feb 7 2015

A cyber-security hole that left more than two million BMWs vulnerable may be the most serious breach the auto industry has faced in its emerging fight against car hackers. Security experts are not only concerned that researchers found weaknesses inside the company's Connected Drive remote-services system. They're worried about how the hackers gained entry. German researchers spoofed a cell-phone station and sent fake messages to a SIM card within a BMW's telematics system. Once inside, they locked and unlocked car doors. Other researchers have demonstrated it's possible to hack into a car and control its critical functions, but what separates this latest exploit from others is that it was conducted remotely. In an industry that's just coming to grips with the security threats posed by connectivity in cars, the possibility of a remote breach has been an ominous prospect. The fact it has now occurred may mean a landmark threshold has been crossed. "It's as close as I've seen to a genuine, remote attack on telematics," said Mike Parris, head of the secure car division at SBD, a UK-based automotive technology consulting company. "At this point, the OEMs are trying to play a game of catch up." Previous researchers in the automotive cyber-security field have launched remote attacks that are similar in nature, though not the same. In 2010, academics at California-San Diego and the University of Washington demonstrated they could remotely control essential functions of a car, but they needed to be within close proximity of the vehicle. In November 2014, researchers at Argus Cyber Security remotely hacked cars with an aftermarket device called a Zubie plugged into their diagnostic ports. But the remote attack was predicated on the Zubie dongle having physically been installed in the car. With the BMW hack, researchers compromised the car without needing physical access or proximity. The German Automobile Association, whose researchers conducted the BMW study, said it infiltrated the system "within minutes" and left undetected, a feat that raises the possibility that a hacker could do the same in a real-world scenario. Messages Were Sent Unencrypted Security analysts described the BMW infiltration as a "man in the middle" attack. Researchers mimicked a cellular base station and captured traffic between the car and the BMW Connected Drive service, which drivers can access and control via an app on their cell phones.

2015 BMW 4 Series convertibles recalled to fix airbag programming woes

Tue, Mar 31 2015

A problem with the airbags on the 4 Series convertible has promoted BMW and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue a recall for some 2,000 vehicles across the United States. The issue, according to the notice below, relates to the driver's side front airbag, whose timing for deployment may be off. And if the airbag doesn't deploy at the right time in the event of a crash, that's more likely to result in an injury. As a result, BMW of North America is calling in 2,067 vehicles – specifically the 428i, 428i xDrive, 435i and 435i xDrive convertibles of the 2015 model year and manufactured between October 22, 2014, and February 27, 2015. Those units will simply need to have the software in the airbag control module reset, and will begin undertaking that process in April.Related Video: Report Receipt Date: MAR 13, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V148000 Component(s): AIR BAGS Potential Number of Units Affected: 2,067 Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC SUMMARY: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 428i Convertible, 428i xDrive Convertible, 435i Convertible, and 435i xDrive Convertible vehicles manufactured October 22, 2014, to February 27, 2015. Due to a programming error, the driver's front air bag deployment timing may be incorrect. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." CONSEQUENCE: If the driver's front air bag deployment timing is incorrect, there is an increased risk of personal injury in the event of a vehicle crash. REMEDY: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the air bag control module with corrected software version, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in April 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
