Wagons make a bit of a comeback, with new models, sales on the rise
Thu, Jan 10 2019Consider this an official invitation to hop on the wagon bandwagon. There's still tons of room because, well, it's a wagon (and market share is still extremely small). But according to new data, the segment is growing. According to a report from Bloomberg, using data from Edmunds.com, roughly 211,600 Americans purchased wagons in 2018. That is technically down from the 237,600 sold in 2017, but wagon sales in the U.S. are up 29 percent from where they were five years ago. It's also the third year in a row that wagon sales broke the 200,000 mark. The sales trends have been somewhat representative of the availability of wagons. New models have debuted during the past 5 years and therefore offer more opportunity at more brands to buy wagons. In addition to more modest cars such as the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen, several luxury and performance brands are offering wagons today, such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Volvo and Buick. (Bloomberg's headlines make the point that "crossovers are for the Kardashians," and wagons are just, well, classier.) This uptick in brand-name availability, as well as extremely well-executed design on most of the wagons currently available, has helped increase the segment's desirability. That, and its ability to better accomplish the same tasks at hand while standing out from the crossover and SUV crowd. Still, the posted numbers represent a small fraction of the total vehicles sold. According to the data, wagons only held a 1.4 percent market share in 2017, the segment's best recent year. Wagons hold a steadfast place in America's past, and they're writing an interesting new story. With the downturn in traditional cars, they may continue to create an unexpected narrative. 1971 BMW 2002 is a car designer's car
Wed, Sep 30 2015Choosing what car to buy, drive, and love is a difficult decision for anyone. But when you're a car designer, the decision carries that much more weight. Then again, it may be that much easier when your whole decision comes down to the visceral and the aesthetic. Take Radu Muntean, for example, who's profiled in this episode of Petrolicious. Not to be confused with the film director of the same name (and nationality), this Radu Muntean is a car designer by trade. Since moving from his native Romania and graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Radu went on to work for the likes of Ford, GM, and Tesla. But his pride and joy is a set of wheels he didn't design himself: it's a 1971 BMW 2002. It's a model that BMW made for the long stretch of time in the 1960s and '70s, and enjoys a cult following to this day. And it's not hard to see why. Radu has customized his vintage Bimmer extensively, but rather than glitzing it up, he's boiled it down to its essence. And like a Lancia Fulvia or Alfa Romeo Giulia of the same era, this 2002 is a thing of simple beauty: squared-off design, slap sides, tall greenhouse, and little more. Related Video:
BMW ready to bring more i3, i8 plug-ins to US
Thu, Oct 9 2014BMW has found a receptive audience for its first batches of plug-in vehicles in the good 'ole USA. The German automaker, which started selling its first mass-produced i plug-ins in Europe late last year, will send a higher percentage of those vehicles to the US because of strong demand here, according to Automotive News, which talked with BMW executive Ian Robertson. And the Americans might cause Bimmer to speed up production, to boot. BMW makes the i3 electric vehicle and i8 plug-in hybrid in Germany, and has sold about 10,000 units of the former and 280 of the latter worldwide. Since August, BMW has been selling about 1,000 i3s a month in the US (it sold just 58 i8s in September). The bigger story, though, may be that Bimmer has sold out of its US allocation of i8s through the end of next year. Pretty heady stuff for a car that starts at around $137,000. Currently, BMW builds around 100 i-series vehicles a day in Germany, and may speed up production of the i8 for the aforementioned reason. As for the i3, which comes with an option of a gas-powered range extender, we'd reported earlier this year that the waitlist for that model had grown to about six months.
