Audi will build E-Tron Quattro in Brussels in 2018
Sun, Jan 24 2016Audi will begin assembly of the production version of the E-Tron Quattro concept crossover in Brussels, Belgium, in 2018, and the company will also build the vehicle's batteries there. Introducing its first electric CUV will be an early step in the German automaker's goal for 20 to 25 percent of US deliveries to be EVs by 2025. The E-Tron Quattro concept previewed the electric crossover's angular styling at the 2015 Frankfurt Show, and Audi was clear that production would start in early 2018. The vehicle should have ample get-up from three electric motors – one in front and two at the back – for a total output of 429 horsepower but brief jolts up to 496 hp. Audi also claimed that the 95-kWh battery could offer over 311 miles of range on the European cycle. The company already signed a deal to use battery cells from LG Chem and Samsung SDI on the final model. Some rumors suggest Audi might call the production version the Q6. The company supports that possibility in its press release by saying: "The sporty SUV will fit between the Audi Q7 and the Audi Q5 in the product portfolio." However, Audi of America president Scott Keogh hinted to Autoblog before the LA Auto Show that it could carry a different name. Audi's development of the E-Tron Quattro is an example of Volkswagen Group's strategy to take EVs more seriously. For example, improved batteries will soon boost the e-Golf's range. Further in the future, Porsche will launch a production version of its Mission E electric sedan around 2020, and VW will reportedly make an electric Phaeton at some point next decade. 2018 Audi A6 endures winter training in Norway
Mon, Feb 13 2017The upcoming 2018 Audi A6 was spied in northern Norway. Still clad in appropriate, but garish camo, the basic shape and detailing of the next-generation A6 can be made out. The grill is wide, the headlights mean; the look matches the recently overhauled A4, but with larger dimensions – a recipe from which Audi hasn't really strayed far since the blob-like A6 of 1997. Audi tried to disguise the new headlights under something that resembles the current front, but there are slimmer units underneath. Other detectable details are the hood's straight line toward the radiator grille, and the mirrors fitted on the door sheetmetal now instead of the A-pillar corners. There can even be a LED light strip between the taillights, like the A8. The car will share its MLB platform with the A8, so some shared design makes sense. The new A6 will also be the first Audi work of the new design boss, Mark Lichte. In 2018, the A6 will face tough competition as both the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5 Series have been recently renewed. It is likely that Audi will line the car with the latest available high tech and a credible Virtual Cockpit integration, as the executive class battle is awash with tech gadgets. Mercedes could make EV batteries with Audi, BMW
Mon, Sep 21 2015It's not a big leap from digital maps to batteries, it turns out.The head of Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler said recently that he envisions his company working together with German automotive competitors BMW and Volkswagen to further accelerate electric-vehicle battery technology. The three automakers recently worked together to enhance their in-car maps systems. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche talked about "commonalities" between automakers, not the least of which is the need for all of them to achieve increasingly stringent fuel-economy requirements in the European Union, at the Frankfurt Auto Show last week, according to Reuters. While these companies have made their own inroads as far as plug-in vehicles go, they are all behind the Renault-Nissan Alliance when it comes to public deployment of electric vehicles. This summer, Daimler, Audi and BMW hooked up to acquire the Nokia Here digital-mapping service for about $2.8 billion. The triad of automakers beat out companies such as Apple and Uber to buy the entity, which was founded in 1986 as Navteq. Nokia bought the company in 2007. The acquisition makes sense as the automakers work on improving their products with features like cloud-based data to warn drivers of icy roads and traffic jams. The technology will likely also eventually be used in autonomous vehicles. Automakers working together for a common goal of improved technology is nothing new, of course. General Motors and Honda agreed in 2013 to work together to accelerate hydrogen fuel-cell drivetrain development. Earlier that same year, Daimler said it would work with Ford and Nissan in a separate collaboration to speed up the development of hydrogen fuel-cell technology. Related Video:
