Audi's new 4.2-liter 40-valve V-8, with a potent 300 horsepower coursing through its output shaft, will significantly change the A6 equation, give it a considerably more exuberant personality, and solidify the model as the center of the marque's North American offensive. While it will also be shared with the A8 (in a 310-horse version), this thoroughly modern eight-cylinder engine will likely provide the most noticeable punch in the lightweight A6, which could give this model the same type of attraction to performance-enthusiasts that the 540i enjoys within the BMW lineup.Technical highlights of this V-8 include a five-valve configuration that uses three intake and two exhaust valves, an electronic "drive-by-wire" throttle, variable camshaft control, and a three-stage magnesium intake manifold, which helps mold a flat, useable torque curve that holds its peak of 296 pound-feet from 3000 to 4000 rpm.The 4.2's power doesn't come on with a gutsy snap, but with a strong, fleet-footed takeoff that's smooth, quiet, and quick. Although our initial test drive in Germany was hampered by snowy weather (which the Quattro system handled in stride), the 4.2 displayed good acceleration, ample passing power on the autobahn, and an eager willingness to go deep into triple digits. Its subtle, distinctive exhaust note identifying its presence, the V-8 blends seamlessly with the rest of the A6 package, enhancing the car's fun factor and liveability, without calling undue attention to itself. In short, the 4.2-liter brings out the performance potential we always longed for in the A6.
Audi tests show the 4.2 can run from 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) in 6.9 seconds. If consistent with our tests, this would put the 4.2 slightly off the pace of its primary competition-the BMW 540i, Mercedes-Benz E430, and Lexus GS 400-which all make the sprint to 60 mph in between 5.5 and 6.2 seconds. The V-8 feeds power to a five-speed driver-adaptive automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual shifting, such as that used in the six-cylinder version. Power is then routed through Audi's Quattro full-time all-wheel-drive system to 235/50YR16 Dunlop SP5000 tires, mounted on 16-inch six-spoke wheels. For upgraded wheels and rubber, you could opt for a sport package, which adds 17-inch five-spoke wheels and 255/40YR17 Dunlop SP9000 high-performance tires, along with a tauter suspension and sport seats. Stopping, meanwhile, is effectively achieved with ventilated discs at all four wheels, high-performance four-piston aluminum calipers in the front, and ABS. Audi's Electronic Stability Program also adds an extra dimension of driver safety and control. To fit the V-8 comfortably into the A6 body, Audi reworked the car's front end, developing new aluminum hood and fenders, headlights, and bumper, which extends the car's front by about 1.6 inches. Other body changes from the current A6 include sill panel extensions along the lower edge, flared wheel openings, and a 1.4-inch-wider track. Meanwhile, a retuned suspension with new aluminum control arms has lowered the ride height by about 0.4-inch.Inside, the A6 4.2 offers a spoiling list of standard features. In addition to front airbags, the 4.2 includes side airbags for both front and rear passengers, plus Audi's new inflatable curtain-type bag, called Sideguard, designed to protect the heads of passengers in front and rear seats during a side impact. Another notable safety feature is the use of pretensioners at all three-point seatbelt locations. More improvements to the current A6's interior include steering-wheel-mounted audio controls that warn you of nearby objects, a larger-faced audio system with easier-to-access buttons and in-dash CD player, and revamped rear seat with more contoured outer positions and an expandable ski sack.On the options list is an acoustic parking system, Xenon headlights, hands-free telephone, and a scaled-down navigation system that's integrated into the driver information system in the instrument cluster. The system doesn't include a map display, but does provide visual and audio directions and is controlled through buttons in the center console. There's no denying that the 4.2-liter V-8 and its accompanying changes bring a welcome new dimension to the already inviting A6. Of course, with higher output and more overall potential comes higher pricing
. While Audi isn't discussing specific pricing yet, the company assures us that it will be "fully competitive" with its primary competition, which should put it in the mid- to upper-$40,000 range. This also means higher expectations as it goes head to head with some of the world's best sport sedans. Is it up to the fight? Stay tuned.

Audi reveals virtual reality 'dealership in a briefcase'
Mon, Jan 19 2015Virtual reality still seems like technology that should be lumped in with the flying car and colonizing the moon as the sort of perennially "almost-here" Next Big Thing that never quite arrives. However, devices like gaming's Oculus Rift suggests that it's too soon to write off VR just yet, and Audi apparently agrees. The heart of its new VR Experience is a headset that customers wear that lets them see a virtual car before their eyes. Using the technology, the potential buyer can sit behind the wheel or open up the trunk. A camera tracks their head movements and adjusts the image on the goggles accordingly. To make the whole experience even more immersive, headphones let them hear the sound of the door or listen to the radio. The German automaker claims that the VR Experience technology will be available in "dynamic growth markets" by the end of 2015. The system will essentially offer the entire dealership experience in a device the size of a briefcase, and it'll be possible to view every possible equipment combination and color on all of the brand's models. The immersive hardware sounds amazing, if it's as good as the automaker claims. Among other things, VR will allow buyers to pick out just the right color and trim, even if the dealer doesn't have that specific combo in stock. Read below for Audi's announcement of this sci-fi gadget that the company claims is on the way. Audi VR experience: the dealership in a briefcase Innovative virtual reality headset extends advisory service at Audi dealers Sales chief Luca de Meo: "Further proof of Audi's pioneering role in sphere of digitization" First Audi dealerships to introduce new sales tool by end of 2015 Audi is taking the next big step in integrating digital technologies into automotive retail: The Audi VR experience gives customers the opportunity to configure their preferred car at the dealership through virtual reality headsets and experience it in a unprecedentedly realistic way. The headset showcases the entire model portfolio of the four rings, including all possible equipment combinations. Audi has become the first automotive manufacturer to develop a dedicated retail software solution for virtual reality headsets.
Audi UrQuattro gets the Petrolicious narrative
Tue, 23 Sep 2014Audi started a revolution in the world of rallying when it paired an all-wheel-drive system with a turbocharged, five-cylinder engine and a rakish, three-door body. That car, the Quattro, didn't just upset the entire balance of the World Rally Championship, it (eventually) led to a transformative effect on the consumer car market.
But we're not just interested in this car simply because history has proven the UrQuattro to be important - we love its sharply creased looks, its offbeat soundtrack and its gravel-spitting abilities. Evidently, so does the crew from Petrolicious, as they've lavished their lenses upon the car. This particular model hails from 1983, and has covered a healthy 175,000 miles, says owner Manuel Leon Minassian. His first experience with the Ur (meaning "original") came in Beirut, where the car received plenty of praise from students at his school.
That first encounter led to a long passion for the Quattro, culminating in his purchase of this car four years ago. Take a look at Minassian and his Audi in the latest video from Petrolicious.
Audi buys Ballard fuel cell patents for $80 million
Wed, Feb 11 2015While some auto companies (e.g., Toyota and Hyundai) are giving away some hydrogen fuel cell patents, others are paying a pretty penny to gain access to the H2 tech. Audi announced today that it has purchased a suite of fuel-cell patent from Ballard Power Systems. The deal between Volkswagen Group and the Canadian fuel cell pioneer is worth over $80 million US. Unsurprisingly, the value of Ballard's stock shot up about a dollar (to $2.61 as of this writing) on the announcement. VW and Ballard will also extend their development agreement, originally scheduled to end in 2017, to March 2019, and possibly another two years after that. Thus far, the deal – which revolves around the "design and manufacture of next-generation fuel cell stacks" for VW's H2 demonstration program – and Ballard says it is a leader in "critical areas of fuel cell product design – including the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), plate and stack components – along with certain testing and integration work." At the LA Auto Show last fall, VW showed off a Golf SportWagen and a Passat with a hydrogen hybrid HyMotion powertrain as well as a Audi A7 Sportback H-Tron Quattro. Audi buys fuel-cell patents from Ballard Power Systems Development agreement with Ballard extended until 2019 Audi's Head of Development Prof. Hackenberg: "The entire VW Group will use these patents." Ingolstadt/Burnaby, February 11, 2015 – AUDI AG has acquired a package of patents relating to fuel-cell technology from Ballard Power Systems Inc. In addition, the Volkswagen Group has extended its cooperation with the Canadian clean energy company until 2019. The purchase of these patents will provide new impetus for the development of fuel-cell drive systems at Audi, VW and the Volkswagen Group. As explained by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG and responsible for the steering of the development departments of all brands in the VW Group: "Audi is acquiring these strategically important patents for the entire group and will make them available to all the brands. In this way, we are securing crucial expertise that will provide new impetus for the further development of this technology." Ballard Power Systems Inc. is based in Burnaby, Canada, and is one of the world's leading companies in the technology of proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
