Aston Martin likely to resurrect Vanquish name for Ferrari fighter

Sun, Jul 29 2018

Aston Martin recently hosted press drives for the new DBS Superleggera in Germany. On the sidelines, Motoring spoke to the carmaker's chief creative officer, Marek Reichman. Answering the question of whether the coming mid-engined rival to the Ferrari 488, Lamborghini Huracan, and McLaren 720 S could revive a very important name for the brand, Reichman responded, "Without saying yes, that sounds like a plausible solution for a beautiful name like Vanquish." The Vanquish named first appeared from 2001 to 2007, returning from 2012 until retiring again this year on the Vanquish S (pictured). Although it's historically been used on the most powerful vehicles in Aston Martin's range, and both of them V12s, the latest flagship switched to two erstwhile monikers in combining DBS and Supeleggera. Reichman said the switcheroo "better reflected [the DBS% positioning than Vanquish." The future V-named coupe will be out to conquer every vehicle in the segment, not just in the family line-up. Still light on details at the moment, we expect the Mercedes-AMG-sourced 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 behind the seats, boosted by an electric motor. Reichman didn't shoot down the possibility of using an electric motor for e-AWD capability and all-electric driving. That motivation will power a body expected to go heavy on carbon fiber, active aerodynamics, and the wind-cheating prowess gained from partner Red Bull Racing and aerodynamicist Adrian Newey. After iterating through 12 scale models and three full-sized mock-ups so far, the creative honcho said the final car will "be the most beautiful mid-engined car on the road." The coming Vanquish will be car number five of Aston Martin's Second Century plan, aiming to deliver seven cars in seven years. The Aston Martin SUV will be the fourth when it enters production late next year, after the DB11, Vantage, and DBS Superleggera. The mid-engined screamer follows in 2020. Related Video:

Refreshed Aston Martin DB11 appears in spy photos

Thu, Jan 12 2023

At nearly 7 years old, the Aston Martin DB11 is starting to show its age, so it makes sense that we'd see at least an updated version like the one in these spy photos. They show a thinly disguised coupe, and the design revisions are pretty minimal, too. But they should come with some useful upgrades under the new body. The front fascia is really about all that's changed on this car. The front grille is much larger, extending farther down and farther to each side than on the current DB11. The old slatted grille is gone, too, in favor of a very large egg-crate mesh. It looks as though the headlights may be updated, too, but it's a bit difficult to tell for sure. As for the rest of the car, it's pretty much identical to the current car. This is all in keeping with the report last February that the entire Aston Martin lineup would be updated, and not just stylistically. Powertrain updates are apparently coming, with hybrids on the horizon. Nothing on this car indicates it's a hybrid, though, and the hybrids are probably another year out. Odds are, we'll see more powerful versions of the base AMG twin-turbo 4.0L V8 and the Aston twin-turbo 5.2L V12 first. Additionally, updated infotainment systems and interior upgrades will be reportedly be part of the refresh. Last year's report said the updated Astons would be launching this year. This prototype does look very close to production-ready, so that timeline still seems likely. And with it being Aston's 110th anniversary, it's a great time to start rolling out fresher product. Aston Martin Vanquish S gets harder, better, faster

Wed, Nov 16 2016

Now in its second generation, the Aston Martin Vanquish has finally earned a red "S" badge. That means a subtle revamp of the Vanquish's shape, speed, suspension, and interior specification to separate the new coupe from both the previous model and the new hotness, the incoming DB11. A meaner front fascia and a racy rear diffuser, both in exposed carbon fiber, reduce frontal lift. The new black quad exhaust pipes tucked into triangular cutouts just look mean. For those who want to go further, the already considerable option sheet gets new elements like carbon-fiber engine louvers and a new diamond-turned wheel design. Aston Martin also talks up an array of "striking painted graphics packs," which likely lean toward the subtle sky blue accents in the car pictured above as opposed to a purple and yellow Indy Pace Car package. The 6.0-liter V12 adds 12 horsepower for a total of 580. Larger inlet manifolds and a freer-breathing intake bestow finer throttle response for an anxious right foot. The eight-speed Touchtronic III gearbox adds refinement at the same time as it swaps cogs more quickly than before. Changes made throughout the suspension, from spring rates to damper internals, should do the trick when driving calls for more hammer than velvet. Not that you need to drive anywhere in the Vanquish S to enjoy it fully, since the cockpit is a reward unto itself. Chopped carbon fiber drenched in a satin sheen comprises the waterfall center console, in high-tech brutalist contrast to the new "Filograph" quilted seats in Bridge of Weir leather. One unsubtle aspect of the Vanquish S: the $294,950 price for the coupe, and a cool $312,950 for the Volante. Deliveries commence in December.
