1973 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spyder
An obvious continuation of Alfa`s Giulietta-Giulia-Duetto series spyders, the 1973 2000 Spyder, while technically more advanced, retains the charm of the earlier cars which are now collectors items commanding prices into the $50,000 realm. The 1973 year model cars were fitted with the more attractive stainless bumpers, and are pre-CAT/smog exempt in California. It is for good reason that these cars too are fast becoming sought after classics. This example is a rare find in that it is a one-owner car accompanied by records from new. Sold new by Brown Motors, Inc in San Rafael, CA on October 1st, 1973, and routinely serviced by Brown Motors through 42,000 miles, then by B. Metras Company to its current mileage, this is truly a well cared for car. In 1977 the motor was completely rebuilt. In 1986 the left front corner was damaged below the headlight. The damage was minor, and repairs were made by Barsottis in Rafael, totaling $1,792. In 1989 the clutch was replaced and radiator re-cored. In 1977 and 1990 the cylinder head was replaced. Countless other major and minor services were performed at regular intervals based on time and mileage. The stack of receipts stands 4 inches high! Today the car is in excellent running order. The motor sounds good and pulls strong with minimal smoke, if any. The Spica fuel injection is well tuned and problem free. The suspension feels reasonably tight, and the brakes work well. Second gear syncro, a common weak point on Alfas, is excellent when warm and good when cold. Cosmetically, it is as nice as you could expect of a 33 year old unrestored car. It has been repainted in its original ivory color. The repaint was a reasonably high quality job, appropriate for its value. Even up close, the paint looks great and the color hides any dirt or flaws. The stainless bumpers have some minor dings, and hazing about them, but are complete and basically straight. The stainless bumpers are much more aesthetically pleasing than the rubber bumpers that the later cars suffered from. The windshield has some minor pitting, but no stars or cracks. A beautiful new canvas top was fitted not long ago, which has a near perfect rear window. The interior is representative of a very well cared for car. The dash, console, and door panel upholstery is excellent. The front seats have probably been redone, and are also excellent, but the rear seats are showing some age and are separating at the seams. The rubber mats have been replaced many years ago, but are again showing only minor wear. The engine bay, trunk, and underside are mechanically tidy, but not detailed. There is no obvious rust anywhere in the body or chassis- a tribute to its lifelong California residence. With the car comes the Service Coupon book, a water damaged sedan manual, and a massive stack of receipts for work completed since new, the spare tire, jack and lug wrench, and a small box of spares which will surely be helpful for the new owner. Alfa Romeo Stelvio caught testing under the cloak of darkness
Tue, Oct 11 2016With Americans still going crazy over compact SUVs and crossovers, the upcoming Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the Italian automaker's latest attempt at regaining its status as a household name in the US. Photographers managed to capture a prototype testing at night with very little camouflage to hide the SUV's overall design. These photos are the clearest ones we've seen of the upcoming SUV. The prototype's front end is extremely similar to the Giulia's with two oval-shaped outlets on the side of the fascia with a v-shaped grille in the center. The headlights, which are surrounded by black tape, also mimic the units found on the Giulia. The ruffles in the camouflage on the hood suggest that the Stelvio gets a pair of vents. The profile of the crossover is much more round than previous prototypes depicted with the overall shape mimicking the Jaguar F-Pace, but much smaller in size. The taillights, surprise, surprise, also resemble the same ones found on the Giulia. There's no way to know what type of engine is powering the Stelvio prototype, but the two tailpipes and skinny tires point toward something much more subdued than the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 that puts out 505 horsepower in the Giulia Quadrifoglio. We expect the production version of the crossover to get the same gasoline and diesel options as the Giulia, depending on where the vehicle is sold. The Stelvio – and this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone – looks like a larger, taller Giulia. While the prototype looks ghastly with its camouflage, we expect, and hope, that the SUV will look a lot better at its debut, which could take place at next month's Los Angeles Motor Show. Alfa Romeo to launch crossover in 2016
Mon, Jan 12 2015Alfa Romeo has an ambitious product plan in place to revive the marque and bring it back to North America. And according to the latest reports, that includes a new crossover. A dozen years after the reveal of the Kamal concept pictured here, the new, as-yet-unnamed production crossover – referred to internally as Project 949 – will be Alfa's first, arriving hot on the heels of sister-company Maserati's upcoming Levante crossover. The high-riding Alfa will be about the size of the Audi Q5 or BMW X3, and is reportedly being developed on the same rear-drive "Giorgio" platform as the replacement for the discontinued 159 sedan, which is expected to be called Giulia overseas but possibly wear the 6C moniker in North America when it's unveiled on June 24 at the Alfa Romeo museum outside Milan. Both models are expected to be produced at the company's Cassino plant near Rome, and feature a new family of engines including a high-output diesel V6. A larger crossover is set to follow as well. Abarth SP 1000 factory restomod entering very limited production
Mon, Jan 3 2022In May 2021, Abarth created a one-off roadster to celebrate the brand's racing history, called the Alfa Romeo Abarth 1000. Based on the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, this was a factory-made callback to the 1966 Fiat Abarth 1000 Sport Prototipo, a highly successful competition car designed for gentlemen racers who wanted to do more than just show up, but who wanted to win. The UK's Auto Italia magazine tweeted that FCA Heritage chief Roberto Giolito said the carmaker would produce at least five customer units of the new Abarth 1000, with a price of around GBP170,000 each ($228,500 U.S.) Details beyond that must wait for the February issue of Auto Italia, due to hit newsstands on January 6 for UK readers. If this happens, it could close the circle on what the 4C was originally meant to be. Legend says the idea for the carbon-tubbed 4C should have spawned a hardcore Fiat that channeled the 1966 Abarth 1000. However, since the 4C took many of its cues and much of its technology from the limited-edition Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, it stuck to being a halo sports car for Alfa Romeo and all other branchings got pruned. Giolito likely reveals more in the interview, seeing as he was head of Fiat and Abarth design from 2011 to 2015. The reboot suits the modern 4C save for the high, 21st-century shoulder line. The 1966 car's low pointy nose, curvy fenders and myriad vents and scoops fit great, and we also dig the exposed roll bar and cut-down rear cowls. For such an expensive restomod, we might have wished for some mechanical changes. It appears there's no change to the 4C's mechanicals, with a 1,742-cc turbocharged four-cylinder sending its 237 horsepower to the rear wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. As such, this should probably be called the Abarth 1740 SP or 1700 SP rather than 1000, since the original was named after the displacement of the modified Fiat 600 engine it used. The original weighed 1,058 pounds dry and had 105 horsepower; the 2,465-pound production 4C won't feel as spry, but should perform a little better. Once British readers get the skinny from the magazine interview, we should know more.
