Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV to lead Italians' EV charge in 2026
Fri, Apr 7 2023Stepping up its commitment toward electric mobility, Alfa Romeo’s chief executive CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato says that the second-generation Stelvio SUV will arrive with electric power in 2026 to replace the current model, and be followed a year later with a large EV sedan. As reported by BritainÂ’s Autocar, the Mk2 StelvioÂ’s design wonÂ’t change much, but the underpinnings will adopt the so-called STLA platform, which is part of Alfa ownerÂ’s StellantisÂ’ range announced a couple of years ago. For the 2024 model year, both the Guilia sedan and the Stelvio will continue with gas power before the switch to electric, and will receive one final refresh before then, said senior VP Larry Dominique. The Italians have also added what Dominique called “buzz models”: the Estrema and the Lusso and Competizione editions. On the subject of extended range for the EVs, Imparato mentioned that the Guilia successor would likely offer up to 435 miles on one charge. Given that the upcoming saloon and SUV will share a platform with the Giulia, they will most likely share its fundamental drivetrain offering too. Alfa has also suggested that the 500-plus horsepower Quadrofoglio will eventually evolve into an electric variant of the Guilia, pumping out a possible overachieving 1,000 horsepower. A new plug-in hybrid SUV called Tonale, a bit smaller than the Stelvio, is due shortly at dealers in the U.S. Related video:
Alfa Romeo 4C Launch Edition marks a day we never thought we'd see
Thu, Apr 17 2014Alfa Romeo has been teasing its return to the United States for years. Each time, it's seemingly been pushed back for one reason or another. The last time we had our Alfa fix fulfilled was when just a few hundred examples of the 8C Competizione crossed the pond late last decade. Now, though, it looks like finally Alfa will be coming back, showing this, the 4C Launch Edition, at the 2014 New York Auto Show. By now, you should know the brief on the 4C – ultra-lightweight, mid-engined, turbocharged and with non-power-assisted steering. It's a driving instrument, and one we've admired from afar since it hit the European market. The 4C Launch Edition is the opening volley of Alfa's US return and adds a number of items to the already appealing sports car. The 500 Launch Editions will be limited to three colors - Alfa Red, Rosso Competizione or Madreperla White. It sports standard bi-xenon headlamps, which do away with the polarizing covers that highlighted European models. A carbon-fiber spoiler and mirror caps and unique forged wheels round out the changes for first US-spec 4Cs. The suspension is firmer, with performance-tuned shocks and stiffer front and rear sway bars. Meanwhile, a racing exhaust should help the turbocharged, four-cylinder engine make its presence known. It doesn't seem like the power output is changing thanks to the new exhaust, although we're expecting the 4C's already throaty warble will sound even better. 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Drivers' Notes | Italy's last savior
Wed, Nov 22 2017Alfa Romeo may be beloved by enthusiasts, but the brand has always had a rough go in the United States. Sure, we may look back fondly now at cars like the Spider, Milano and Giulia, but those models never had the impact of their German or British rivals. Slow sales and a reputation for poor reliability killed Alfa in the U.S. more than two decades ago. The automaker is back with cars like the 4C, Giulia and, most important, the 2018 Stelvio crossover. The Stelvio needs to sell well if Alfa has any hope of staying alive in America. Sure, it may not be as sharp or as handsome as the Giulia, but the market demands crossovers, so that's what it'll get. The Stelvio is jumping into a tough and highly contested segment. Rivals like the Porsche Macan, Jaguar F-Pace, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class are all strong competitors with handsome styling and sporty driving dynamics. The Stelvio is going to have to really shine to make a dent. Associate Editor Joel Stocksdale: The Alfa Romeo Stelvio feels very much like a bigger, taller Giulia. While this does mean that it feels a bit less nimble and frisky, it also means that it's one of the best drivers in its class. Under the hood is the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 280 horsepower. It feels just right for this crossover. It's happy to sit at low rpm on the highway, but also delivers brisk acceleration when tromping on the gas. It even sounds good, providing a growly snorty sound when accelerating. It's sort of like a grown-up version of the engine in the Fiat 500 Abarth. Ride and handling are well-balanced, too. Steering is very quick, and the whole vehicle feels remarkably light. It leans significantly more than the Giulia in turns. But as crossovers go, the Stelvio is a great handler. The ride is on the stiff side, but far from punishing. I do wish the steering was a little heavier, and that the weight built up more progressively. It feels a little less communicative than I'd prefer. The Giulia connection continues inside, but this time we wish they weren't so similar. Though the dashboard is an attractive shape, there are quite a few low-rent plastics strewn about. A number of the knobs feel chintzy, too. There's not a lot of knee room up front, either, and the seat could use a few more adjustment options. One thing the Stelvio's interior nails, though, are those wonderful shift paddles.
