Rumors abound over Honda's mid-engined 'Small NSX'

Wed, Jul 29 2015

The "baby NSX" lately in the news has been in Honda's idea cloud since before the 2008 global financial rift. The company called it the "Small NSX" and reports said it "will really be a scaled-back version" of Acura's exotic, including the mid-engine layout and a variation of the hybrid SH-AWD. It even had a price: $50,000 to $60,000. So more than seven years on, when a series of patent images materialize for what looks like an NSX-inspired Honda sports car, it doesn't prove anything, but it fits. Motoring reports that the Small NSX will sit at the top of a lineup of three mid-engined sports cars intended for the Honda brand - but note that Motoring is based in Australia, where our Acura NSX is sold as a Honda. This Small NSX would be a "radical replacement" for the Honda S2000 that ended production in 2009. Beneath it will be a global version of the S660 roadster that could come here as an S1000 with 125 horsepower. The Civic Type R and a much sportier, reimagined CR-Z will put some long forgotten handling chops at other price points in the model mix. Motoring's sources say the Small NSX design work is, "for all intents and purposes, completed." The consistent rumor regarding engine is the 306-hp 2.0-liter turbo VTEC used in the Civic Type R. One electric motor will be in back to help move the rear wheels, two electric motors will hang on the front axle. Overall power output is put at around 400 hp, with 330 hp of that coming from the ICE, working through a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. An aluminum frame with aluminum and carbon fiber parts will discourage heft, the final product at aiming at a weight under 3,100 pounds. Its price should be competitive with its intended target, the Porsche Cayman. The 2018 Detroit Auto Show is where we might see it, before it goes into production later that year at Honda's Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, OH. Acura dealer association nabs retiring pitcher Mariano Rivera for New York spot

Thu, 26 Sep 2013

Mariano Rivera, considered one of Major League Baseball's best relief and closing pitchers, bought an Acura when he debuted in the major leagues in 1995, and has owned nothing but Acuras since. So it was only natural for the New York Acura Dealers group to strike up a partnership. The fruits of the deal can be seen in the latest New York Acura commercial, called "Legends," which stars Rivera and Acuras new and old. It's narrated by actor Steve Schirripa, who played Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri in HBO's The Sopranos.
"The spots are a nod to Acura's history and the years it overlapped with Mariano's career," says Scott Rodgers, chief creative officer at Tier10, the ad agency that developed the campaign's concept. With the "Legends" campaign, Rivera and the New York Acura Dealers continue a partnership that has provided $800,000 to the pitcher's charity, the Mariano Rivera Foundation.
The hardest part of the commercial was was finding the cars to star in it, according to Douglas Sonders, co-founder of 8112 Studios, the production company that shot the commercial. "Social media saved the day for us," he says. "After days of cold calls and e-mails to all of our contacts, we ended up sourcing everything we needed in 24 hours after asking our online contacts for assistance."

Acura recalls some 2022 TLXs for potential slashed tires

Wed, Dec 28 2022

Acura has issued a recall that applies to less than 20 units of the 2022 TLX sedan. The cars included in the campaign were manufactured with tires that may have been damaged by part of a robotic arm while being sorted and stored at a Bridgestone facility in Tennessee. Assigned recall number 22V-950 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the campaign includes 19 units of the TLX built on September 1, 2022, and Acura estimates that 95% of them may have been built with damaged tires. The company explains that the tires fitted to these vehicles could have sustained cuts and/or tears because a protective plastic shoe located at the base of a robotic arm used to unstack tires exposed a sharp edge by rotating out of position. Damaging a tire's bead area can cause it to gradually lose air; the problem can also manifest itself through unusual noises or vibrations. The tire pressure monitoring system could warn the driver of an issue. The tires in question are Bridgestone's 235/50R18 Turanza EL440. Acura states that it's not aware of warranty claims, field reports, injuries or crashes related to the issue, and Bridgestone says that human workers are now tasked with loading and unloading tires in its facility. Owners of affected cars will receive details about the recall campaign by mail starting on January 30, 2023. They'll be asked to take their TLX to a dealership to get the tires inspected; new tires will be installed free of charge if the ones on the car fall within the affected date range. Drivers who experienced a problem related to this recall and paid to get new tires installed will be eligible to ask Acura for a refund. Related video:
