2024 Fisker Ocean Extreme price chopped, other trims get more expensive

Mon, Oct 23 2023

Fisker is changing up the pricing for its Ocean SUV by drastically reducing the price of its top trim and increasing the price of its lower trims. The biggest swing is for the Ocean Extreme trim, as Fisker is dropping the MSRP by $7,500 down to just $61,499. Additionally, Fisker says that “customers who have already ordered or purchased an Ocean Extreme will receive a $7,500 price adjustment.” Why is Fisker dropping the price so much? “It is essential that Fisker responds to competitive realities in the rapidly growing EV market,” CEO Henrik Fisker said. Without saying so out loud, that means Tesla. The Model YÂ’s pricing has fluctuated wildly over the past couple of years, and while a nearly $70,000 SUV mightÂ’ve been a competitive price point before, Fisker thinks it needs to get closer in line with the marketÂ’s current pricing. All that said, the price of the Ultra and Sport models will be going up at the same time. The Ultra is up by $3,000 to $52,999, and the Sport is up by $1,500 to $38,999. This new pricing will go into effect on November 6, which is when Fisker says itÂ’s opening ordering for 2024 model year Oceans. Anybody with an order in before November 5 will get to retain their original (lower) pricing. Beyond the pricing news, Fisker says its Extreme trim is officially EPA-rated for 350 miles of range now. EPA ratings for the lower trims still arenÂ’t out, but Fisker claims 231 miles for its base Sport trim. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. Junkyard Gem: 1997 Acura 1.6 EL

Sat, Oct 21 2023

Drivers from Mexico or Canada who take their cars across the border into the United States may drive them legally here for one year, after which they must drive back home or go through a registration process that ranges from arduous to impossible, depending on the state. As a result, quite a few Canadian- and Mexican-market cars end up marooned and un-registerable here, and I find some of them during my junkyard travels. Today, we've got a Canada-only Acura that showed up in a Northern California boneyard recently. I'm always looking for junkyard odometers with very high final readings (right now a 631k-mile Volvo 240 holds the record), and at first glance I though I had come across a Civic sedan with nearly 450,000 miles. Then I noticed the metric speedometer and realized that I was looking at a non-US-market car. 448,538 kilometers is 278,709 miles, by the way. A look at the build tag and emissions stickers showed that this car was built and sold in Canada. I'd found a second-generation Acura EL in a Colorado junkyard a few years back, so I knew that I'd just found a first-generation EL. Like its Acura Integra contemporary, the Acura EL was based on the Honda Civic. It replaced the Integra in Canada for 1997 and production continued through 2005. It differed somewhat in appearance from the Civic and had a nicer interior but was mechanically nearly identical to the US-market Civic EX sedan. A version for the Japanese market was built in Canada and exported across the Pacific as the second-generation Honda Domani. The engine is a 1.6-liter SOHC four-banger with VTEC, rated at 127 horsepower and 107 pound-feet. This one appears to be a loaded EL Premium, with the optional four-speed automatic. List price would have been C$22,000, or about $30,676 in 2023 United States dollars (using the exchange rate for June of 1997). The decklid had an EL-only spoiler, so a local Honda expert must have bought it for a Civic sedan. Since this car was old enough to be federally legal under the 25-year rule, it could have been registered legally in some US states… but California's strict emissions regulations would have made the process too difficult to be worth undertaking on a near-300k-mile machine that isn't particularly exotic.

2024 Genesis G70 adds performance with a 300-hp four-cylinder

Thu, Oct 19 2023

Though it doesn't look much different, the 2024 Genesis G70, or at least the base four-cylinder, has received a big improvement. The 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder has been replaced with the more powerful 2.5-liter unit that was introduced in the 2022 Kia Stinger. And with a few other standard upgrades, this should be the best Genesis G70 (an already excellent sports sedan) yet. Output for the 2.5-liter engine is 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, improvements of 48 horsepower and 51 pound-feet. Our experience with the Stinger counterpart revealed that the improvements are greater than just the peak numbers. It offers better power across the rev band, including when it's out of boost. And when the turbo has spooled up, the boost comes on more smoothly and quickly. On top of engine improvement, all four-cylinder G70s now get Brembo brakes as standard for improved stopping power. Combined with the lighter nose than the V6, plus better fuel economy, the four-cylinder G70 should become an extremely appealing option even beyond the lower price point. The rest of the changes for 2024 are more modest. The exterior is pretty much untouched save for a couple new exterior colors (including the blue on the pictured car). Inside, there are some new two-tone leather options along with USB-C charging ports, touch-sensitive climate controls and a frameless rearview mirror. The rear seats get standard side-impact airbags, too. And if you're interested, the G70 is available with the digital phone key that's becoming more available across Hyundai group models. Pricing has not been announced, nor has availability. The four-cylinder models will probably see a modest price increase as a result of the new engine and brakes. The V6 models will likely not change much as they haven't received as many changes. Genesis will announce when the new cars will hit lots along with pricing later this year. BMW chooses Tesla's Supercharger network for its future EVs

Wed, Oct 18 2023

BMW, following the lead of many other automakers, has confirmed this week that it will adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS), delivering EV drivers in the U.S. and Canada access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. The move goes a step further in cementing NACS as the universal system of choice. The conversion to Tesla plugs will begin formally in 2025 for BMW, as well as its Mini and Rolls-Royce brands in the U.S. market. Those marques now use the Combined Charging System (CCS) for EV charging. “It is our top priority to ensure that our drivers have easy access to reliable, fast charging," said Sebastian Mackensen, President & CEO, BMW of North America. NACS, which began as began as TeslaÂ’s proprietary charging connection, rapidly has become the new standard in its native land after Ford announced it would adopt it this past summer. This was quickly followed by General Motors. Since then, brands including Rivian, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, Polestar, and Jaguar have climbed d on board NACS. Earlier this month, the Hyundai Motor Group announced it would also provide customers with the NACS connector across its namesake, Kia, and Genesis marques. BMW says it will work across its three marques in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition to TeslaÂ’s charging network by early 2025, and owners will be able to pay for charging using their respective vehicle brandÂ’s own app. Related Video: How to charge a non-Tesla on a Supercharger

Buick Enclave spy photos reveal curvy, minimal interior

Tue, Oct 17 2023

We got a pretty good look at the next-generation Buick Enclave last month via some spy photos, and this month we get a peek inside. While the exterior takes after the Wildcat concept, the interior follows in the path set by the recently redesigned and launched Encore GX and Envista. The focal point of the new Enclave's interior is the curved screen panel encompassing both the instrumentation and the infotainment. It has the rounded, inverted trapezoid look of the little Buicks, but from the gap in the screen covers, it looks like the screens will fill up the housing much better on those base crossovers. Just below the infotainment side of the screen array is a minimalist set of climate control buttons (piano key style) and a pair of air vents. It's difficult to tell much else of the dash due to the coverings. Based on the little Buicks, the screen probably sits on a small alcove with the rest of the dash being smoother and wrapping around behind the screen. The steering wheel isn't shared with the smaller Buicks, nor does it appear to be that similar to what we've seen in either the new Chevy Traverse or the GMC Acadia. It has a sleek, simple three-spoke design with a small circular center horn and airbag section. We also noticed the black plastic strip at the top of the wheel that likely houses the lighting and infrared sensors that go along with GM's Super Cruise hands-free highway driving assist. We're expecting the Enclave to be revealed soon, possibly early next year, with deliveries coming soon after. This is because this prototype looks pretty much production-ready, and we've already seen its cousins from Chevy and GMC. It will likely get the same turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque with an eight-speed automatic and either front- or all-wheel drive. Related video:

Stellantis reveals Citroen e-C3, first of EVs on affordable platform to compete with influx from China

Tue, Oct 17 2023

MEUDON, France — Citroen on Tuesday unveiled its new electric e-C3 SUV, a low-cost model starting at 23,300 euros ($24,540) aimed at taking on Chinese carmakers in the affordable electric vehicle market. The EV from Citroen, part of the Stellantis auto group, will be assembled in Slovakia and launch in the second quarter of 2024. It is the same size as the current C3 city car, but less rounded and slightly taller. Its price tag does not include state subsidies of up to 5,000 euros. "This is the most important launch for the Citroen brand in at least 10 years," Citroen General Manager Thierry Koskas told reporters. "This is a new way of breaking market conventions. A European electric car at 23,000 euros? There isn't one.” The average European electric city car costs around 30,000 euros. To go lower, Stellantis is reusing its simplified "Smart Car" platform used in India, which differs from the four EV platforms the group has under development. Stellantis said it plans to base seven models across its brands on this platform, likely including the next Fiat Panda. The EV also has a limited range of 320 km (199 miles) using cheaper LFP battery technology imported from China.  With 90% of its suppliers from low-cost countries, a reduced diversity and a cheaper battery technology from China, the Smart Car platform will allow Stellantis to cut the e-C3 price further to as low as 20.000 euros, for its shorter-range version, Citroen's head Thierry Koskas said on Tuesday.  The basic trim, which could qualify for the French government's 100-euro-per-month "social leasing" affordable EV program, lacks an infotainmeant screen but still allows a mobile phone to be connected. Citroen's Koskas said the carmaker had no desire to make the new C3 a "technological Christmas tree" but had not skimped on what mattered. "It has comfort attributes and electrical attributes that are at the best level,” he said. The EV, for instance, includes the soft suspension that Citroen has usually reserved for larger models. Europe is bracing for an influx of lower-cost Chinese EVs, so Citroen has plans to go further. The brand plans a cheaper electric C3 at the beginning of 2025 – starting at 20,000 euros – with a reduced range of 200 km, Koskas said. Citroen's C3 last year accounted for 11% of the city car market in Europe. Since the first generation of the model in 2002, more than 5.6 million have sold.

Volvo's SuperTruck 2 looks ready to extend a ramp for K.I.T.T.

Mon, Oct 16 2023

In 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) entered a public-private partnership with willing Class 8 truck makers, the goal of the partnership to dramatically improve the freight efficiency of over-the-road (OTR) trucks. The term "freight efficiency" refers to freight-ton efficiency, a different metric than miles per gallon because it takes into account the weight of the truck; a lighter tractor-trailer can carry more weight before reaching the 80,000-pound legal maximum on most U.S. highways. Volvo, Daimler (which owns the Freightliner and Sterling brands), Navistar (International), and Peterbilt signed on the the partnership to develop what's being called a SuperTruck. Volvo, Daimler, and International make their own engines, Peterbilt teamed up with Cummins, and all four found their own trailer manufacturers to work with. Those four makers debuted their first iterations of what's being dubbed SuperTrucks about six years ago. This year has been all about SuperTruck 2, Volvo the last of the quartet to show what it's achieved. The goal for SuperTruck 1 was to achieve a 50% increase in freight efficiency compared to a 2009 baseline, the baseline in Volvo's case being a 2009 VNL 670 tractor. The goal for SuperTruck 2 was another 50% improvement. Volvo said its internal goal was a 120% betterment compared to 2009, and that it exceeded the mark with a 134% increase. The company said the huge gains came primarily from aerodynamics: A wedge-shaped front with a smaller frontal area thanks to a smaller cooling package; the heavily curved, wraparound windshield; the tractor's adjustable ride height; using camera for side mirrors; and adding a boat tail to the back of the trailer, plus enough fairings and skirts front-to-back to make the tractor and trailer look like a single unit when driving in a straight line. Volvo did make changes to its rolling lab that aren't likely to infiltrate the U.S. market anytime soon. It's common for U.S. OTR trucks to use a 6x4 configuration, with two axles behind the cab, both driven. Volvo's SuperTruck 2 went with a 4x2 setup common in Europe, using a single axle behind the cab, and fitted a composite driveshaft. Combined with making the chassis out of aluminum instead of steel, and trailer partner Wabash providing a lightweight aluminum van, the tractor-trailer combo weighed just 27,000 pounds.

Come for the tea, leave with a car. How Genesis is upping its luxury game

Sun, Oct 15 2023

CHERRY HILL, N.J. — Genesis has the cars, the tech, the sales and pampering service. It has Genesis House, a stunning, wood-ceilinged sanctuary in Manhattan – near the High Line and Little Island Park – where visitors can enjoy everything from a cozy library and traditional Korean tea service, to an ambitious restaurant and cocktail bar helmed by chefs trained at the Michelin-starred Onjium in Seoul. (Genesis House itself is a Michelin Guide addition for 2023). If youÂ’re suitably impressed by the abalone, snow crab and poached egg dish on a tasting menu, perhaps youÂ’ll hit the showroom for a new car. Only one menu item has been missing for this fast-rising luxury brand: A network of stand-alone showrooms to give customers the full luxury experience, as Genesis guns hard for Mercedes, BMW and other establishment brands. On a media drive from New York to Philadelphia in the full trio of Genesis EVs – the GV60 hatchback/SUV, Electrified G80 sedan and Alabama-built Electrified GV70 SUV – we roll past a prime example of the brandÂ’s brick-and-mortar handicap. The Genesis of Cherry Hill store, in the New Jersey suburbs just over the Delaware River from Philly, might have managed to sell 1,010 Genesis cars last year, but it did so side-by-side with a Hyundai store that sold 1,500 cars of its own. ItÂ’s the auto equivalent of a combination Pizza Hut and RuthÂ’s Chris, and itÂ’s unfortunately been the norm. Literally underlining the point, the Genesis name and winged logo sits below HyundaiÂ’s, squashed together on an outdoor showroom sign. Genesis of Cherry Hill in New Jersey View 7 Photos Just down the road is the swankier luxury model: The new standalone Genesis of Cherry Hill, where owner Peter Lanzavecchia is joined by family, colleagues and longtime charity partners – including broadcaster and former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron “Jaws” Jaworski – for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Cherry Hill operation marks the ninth stand-alone Genesis store in America, for a luxury brand that has now sold more than 1 million cars around the world since it became a separate marque in 2015. After a slow start in America, with a two-sedan lineup in a nation besotted with SUVs, Genesis is gaining serious momentum with acclaimed models like its top-selling GV70. September saw Genesis mark a pair of U.S. sales records, with 6,453 sales for its best-ever month, and a quarterly record of 19,427 sales.

Infiniti Vision Qe concept will preview the brand's first EV

Fri, Oct 13 2023

Infiniti released a dark preview image to give us an early look at its next concept. Called Qe, the design study will make its debut in October 2023 and provide a glimpse at what the Japanese brand's first series-produced electric car will look like when it lands later in the 2020s. Details about the Qe concept are few and far between, and the dark picture published by Infiniti leaves a lot to the imagination. It shows light reflecting on what looks like a fastback-like silhouette, so we know we're not looking at a convertible or at a big, burly SUV like the QX80. We think we see four doors, but the bottom part of the car is obscured so it's too early to tell whether this is a low-slung sedan or a crossover. Out back, a rear light bar is seemingly integrated into a spoiler that's positioned above backlit "INFINITI" lettering. We'll need to be patient to find out more, but an earlier report casts a little bit of light on what to expect from the Qe. Although unofficial, it details four new Infiniti models due out in the coming years, and two are electric. The first is a replacement for the Q70. It will reportedly land by the end of 2026 as the brand's first electric car, and it will feature shorter overhangs as well as a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, which retired in 2019. The second was described by insiders as "a midsize crossover." That's all we know, but odds are the Qe previews one of these two EVs. Infiniti will fully unveil the Qe on October 24, 2023. It also pledged to announce "several stunning new models" at the unveiling event. We're notably expecting to learn more about the next-generation QX80, which was previewed by the QX Monograph concept in August 2023.
