***DISCLAIMER: When I bought this Westy, I knew NOTHING about cars. Now, I know almost nothing. I will do my best to explain the mechanical condition of the vehicle, but please keep in mind my lack of experience, and contact me if you need clarification or have concerns!

This 1978 'Westy' is of the special Champagne Edition II variety, complete with pop-top sleeping area, fridge, sink, and stove. It has had three owners over its lifetime, and had one engine replacement by the second owner in 2010 (More engine info below). It is a great bus, but it is in need of a little TLC before it will be road-ready again. Again, this bus needs a little work before it is ready to drive!

Condition
Lets start with what it will take to make her road worthy:

-The starter and solenoid are in good shape, but for some reason the wires are having a hard time making proper contact, and thus she will not start unless the wires are arranged *just right*. This problem began when a corroded wire broke, and I replaced a length of it and the other wires leading to the starter/solenoid.

-Once the engine is running, it tends to bog down and die unless the throttle is fairly open. This problem was fixed by performing a valve adjustment, but reappeared after performing a cylinder compression test, and I lack the knowledge/experience to troubleshoot the problem.

-If you live in a state/county with emission control, you may need to do a bit of work to pass emissions. Adjust fuel/air mixture and such. In the past, the hydrocarbons on idle have been higher than is allowed in the state of Utah.

Engine:
As I said before, the van had an engine replacement sometime around 2010, by the previous owner. According to him, the replacement engine came from the same year and model of VW van, and had VERY low mileage. I believe that now, after my ownership, the engine has about 6000 miles on it. The previous owner replaced the engine himself; I cannot speak to his mechanical know-how or skill, but everything seems to have been done properly to me.

Exhaust:
The exhaust system had professional work done in 2011 to patch a leak and machine a new part. Everything should be working soundly, though it has been sitting for about a year and may have some build up to spew out.

Fuel:
The fuel filter and fuel lines have all been replaced this month, with the exception of the fuel lines in the engine compartment itself.

Interior:
The upholstery inside is in good shape, with the exception of the drivers seat, which has suffered a bit of wear and tear. Will include seat covers.
The "mattress" in the back has a water stain near the rear hatch.
The pop-top canvas has come undone on one corner, and will need to be re-stapled.
The fridge and sink operate off a secondary battery, and I have not tested them. When I purchased the vehicle I was told that they were in working condition.
There is a chip in the wood paneling of the under sink cupboard. Note picture.

Exterior:
There are a few rust spots on the exterior of the bus, as noted in the pictures.
The sliding door latch does not operate properly, and I have removed the track cover in order to manually operate the latch. I am not sure what will be required to fix it.
One hubcap is missing.
The wipers and headlights have been replaced recently.
The tires are in great shape, except the spare. It has a leak, and will need to be checked out.

Extras

I am including a few extra things, as follows-
-Extra fuel lines, clamps, and diagrams for replacing fuel lines (Leftovers from replacing them recently)
-Extra headlight bulb
-4 spare spark plugs
-Grateful dead VW flag (came with the bus, passing it along!)
-Bentley service manual (great resource for VW bus work!)
-Book "How to rebuild your Volkswagen air-cooled engine", by Tom Wilson

Shipping and payment

The buyer is responsible for arranging shipment. I am, of course, happy to help load the vehicle onto the delivery truck and such.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, ect. feel free to contact me! I can send specific photos, clarify specific conditions, and do walk arounds of the vehicle while on the phone. Thanks for your time, and happy bidding!

Porsche again staring down another $1.8B in hedge fund lawsuits

Wed, 15 May 2013

The sequence of events from 2007 that began with Porsche's secret attempt to take over Volkswagen, and instead lead to Porsche being taken over by VW, continues to instigate lawsuits against the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. A group of hedge funds that suffered over $1 billion in losses sued the car company in New York. Porsche had publicly stated it wasn't trying to buy VW, the hedge funds in question were shorting VW stock, and when Porsche's actual intentions were revealed, the stock shot up and the hedge funds took a beating.
The case was thrown out over the issue of jurisdiction, then appealed, only to see another suit filed on top of that. After that, most of the hedge funds withdrew their claims in New York and Porsche offered a 90-day window to refile in Germany where it is already fighting a number of other suits over the same issue. The hedge funds accepted the offer, refiling in Stuttgart for $1.8 billion in damages. According to Bloomberg, Porsche hasn't commented on the refiling, but as the same plaintiffs are involved, it's safe to assume that the carmaker still feels the case is "unsubstantiated and without merit." It has fared alright so far even in German courts, with two lesser cases against it thrown out last year.

VW Up Buggy may be headed to showrooms

Tue, 02 Jul 2013

Volkswagen showed six conceptual takes on its Up at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, one of those being the Up Buggy. Although few will probably remember it, VW has not forgotten it, applying for a patent for the Meyers Manx revival roadster way back in March 2012 and being approved in June of this year, according to a report in Autocar. That will give the automaker a 14-year lock on the design while it decides whether to move forward with a reboot of its past.
A patent doesn't mean the Up Buggy will ever move beyond the sheet-of-paper stage, but Autocar says VW is studying the market to see if a production version is feasible. We can't see North America ever getting it, but even so, we wouldn't complain if they made it - especially if they put an exposed engine in back that was set off by 18-inch-long twin tailpipes jutting straight up into the air. However, for a company that aims to be the world's number-one automaker by 2018, a niche vehicle for its mass-market brand would be a surprising use of resources.

BMW, Ferrari, VW cars use tungsten mined by terrorists

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Bloomberg Markets is reporting that BMW, Volkswagen and Ferrari have been using tungsten ore sourced from Columbia's FARC rebel terrorists. The extensive story focuses on Columbia's illegal mining trade and calls into question the provenance of the rare ore that is used not only in crankshaft parts production, but is also found in the world's computing and telecommunications industry for use in screens.
The ore is mined by the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People's Army), and exported to Pennsylvania, where it is refined. The refined ore is then sent over to Austria, where a company called Plansee turns it into a finished product. Now, it's important to note that we aren't talking about the world's supply of tungsten here. In 2012, Plansee's American refinery purchased 93.2 metric tons of tungsten, valued at $1.8 million. That's peanuts, with the entire Colombian tungsten mining industry producing just one percent of the world's supplies.
That doesn't make indirectly supporting FARC any more acceptable, though. BMW, VW and Ferrari are all committed to not accepting mineral supplies from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is also in the grips of a guerrilla insurrection funded, in part, by illegal mining. The same commitment would figure to extend to Colombian mining, but as BMW points out, it's difficult for a multi-national manufacturer to know where every item in its supply chain comes from. A company spokesperson says as much, telling Bloomberg, "These few grams out of the billions of tons of raw materials passing through the BMW supply chain are of no practical relevance."
