Beware of unecessary maintenance recos for bill paddin
I have been taking my cars here for over 5 years now for inspections and basic maintenance. I recently took my fairly new car in for inspection and then received the dreaded call. The service manager informed me that I had a leaky shock and would not be able to get an inspection sticker unless it was fixed. He suggested I might take it to the dealer but they would charge a great deal more. I called his bluff. ... view moreI left with stickers and no shock repair, and absolutely no mention of it on the bill. Hmmm. He also suggested a needless fuel system cleaning saying there was dirt around my air filter and carbon and such. ???? Say what? This is total BS simply directed at padding the bill. The manager is new and obviously motivated to drive department revenues. I`m curious as to whether this might be rooted in the recent acquisition of Pep Boys by a private equity firm bent on driving up profits. A naive proposition in this day of the internet. I no longer trust them and will no longer take my vehicles there. I feel fortunate that it was not my wife since she may have been frightened into going along with his recommendations. A chat with the cabby on the way back to pick up my car yielded a horror story about a brake job his son had done.

SOUTH HILL PEP BOYS Puyallup WA 98373
I have taken for years both of my cars to the Puyallup Pep Boys because they were always friendly and attentive. One of the cars is a Chrysler 1998 that needs an oil gasket to be replaced because it leaks oil. The car has been there many times with the same problem. The car is still there after 2 weeks. No oil gasket has been replaced because even though a lot of repairs have been done to it regarding the oil pro... view moreblem, they just simply did not replace the oil gasket since the very beginning. I spoke to Alex the store manager and I asked him for help. All I am asking is that the oil gasket be replaced. I am a senior and a loyal customer of Pep Boys in Puyallup. Can you help me? Go here if you like to be treated like dirt and wait all day
So after three terrible trips here, I`ve decided to finally post a review. The first time I went for a standard oil change. They told me it would be finished in 20 minutes. After 50 minutes I finally questioned them, then had to wait another 10 minutes before I could check-out. I was furious that I had to wait so long but figured that they were just busy and I excused them despite the poor customer service and lenght... view morey wait. The second time I went, I went for a bulb that had burnt out in my tail light. Since I`m not a car person, someone ""helped"" me pick out my bulb. They picked out the wrong one, but I didn`t know it. I couldnt` replace the bulb on my own because I didn`t have the proper tools, so I had them do it. I was told it would be a 30-40 minute wait. After an hour and a half, I asked about the progress of the car. I was told that I had the incorrect bulb (even though a car pro had picked it out and assured me it was correct) and that not only was th bulb incorrect, they didn`t have any of my bulb in stock and DIDN`T EVEN FIX IT AND DIDN""T TELL ME AFTER AN HOUR AND A HALF OF WAITING!!! This by the way, was the manager`s fault. A regular staff member told me that the manager said he would tell me and never did. So I drove away with my car unfixed. At that point I vowed to never go to that Pep Boys again, but unfortunately, since I was going on a long trip, I needed to have my oil changed, and this location was the easiest to get to, so I went one last time. HORRIBLE. I was told again, the wait would be 15-20 minute because it was 9:00am on a week day. I also ordered the ""free"" brake check. The girl who helped me, her name was Angelica or something like that, was unfriendly and took her time. Well after another hour and a half, I got up to ask about my car. I figured they would take longer with the brake check, but not this long. The girl, Angelica, ignored me standing there. Another nicer girl helped me out, but I still had to wait forever to find out if my car was done. It was, but she didn`t know whether or not my brakes were ok. What was the point of getting them checked if they weren`t going to tell me anything???? So I had to wait until she checked. Then I had to pay at the register before I could get my keys. Over at the register I discovered that Angelica had charged me $10 for the ""free"" brake check. The cashier was very nice and she told me that it was only free if you had a rewards card, so she gave me one. Then I went back over to retrieve me keys, only to wait forever because the nice girl was busy and Angelica was fiddling around and ignoring me standing at the service area. I actually had to stand there and say ""EXCUSE ME, CAN I HAVE MY KEYS TO LEAVE??? I DON""T WANT TO WAIT, I SEE THEM THERE!"" Angelica told me I couldn`t leave because I was missing some paper, but the nice and hard working girl came back and told me I didn`t need it and she rolled her eyes at Angelica. So I went for routine work and ended up spending TWO HOURS THERE. Can you believe it? That place is CHAOS and run by ignorant managers and lazy staff who are rude to their customers (with the few exceptions of course). They act like you aren`t standing there waiting to be helped and they always tell you something will be done in 20 minutes when it takes hours for routine things. COME ON! Despite it being next door to me, I will NEVER return here and will find other places even if it`s a drive. DON`T GO HERE.

TOTAL RIP-OFF!
My car is driven less than 2000 miles annually and has never had a problem with inspection. My usual mechanics were on vacation and I decided to run the car to PEP Boys for the usual flawless inspection. My wife followed me in her car all the way there. We waited more than four hours. After their so-called ""inspection"" they informed me that my brake lights were out and would cost more than $400 to repair! My w... view moreife insisted that the lights were all operative the whole way there! Of course, the brake lights don`t work now! I`ll wait for my own mechanics! DON`T LET THESE PEOPLE ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR CAR! I would have given them zero stars, but the lowest score is one. They don`t even deserve that!

Could be better, could be worse
I gotta say, my experience both times with these guys was really horrible which kind of surprised me especially from a chain. First time I was left hanging over a couple of tires that I question i actually needed and then it was an oil change that i knew i needed but shouldn`t have taken 2.5 hours. Very ordinary.

Why do I go back?
Most recently I brought my car in for inspection. I was informed that my car had failed and the diagnostics alone would cost me $455. One reason I had failed was that my reverse lights were out. They wanted to hook my car up to an electrical diagnostic.. instead of replacing the light bulbs.
The previous time I went (I really should learn but sometimes I have no choice but to go here!) - I came to pick up the car.... view more They gave me my keys, I started my car and tried to drive away. My stick shift was a noodle. Turns out some new kid they let work on my car didn`t know how to put a VW in reverse.. and broke it. Then they let me try to drive it off the lot.

Please take your car elsewhere.

worst service department
the mechanics there would not be able to fix a toy car let alone a real one. why corporate headquarters lets these guys rip people off is beyound me. I guess they are making a lot of money for the company. Whatever you do please do not go here you will be sorry. The only reason I gave them 1 star was because I had to.

do not go here
I was on a visit to philly when my car suddenly seized and stopped working. I always use the same mechanic back home, so when pepboys told me my car had a broken time-belt i became concerned and contacted a mechanic i knew i could trust. At pepboys insisted that they looked at it and there was no additional damage. but after telling them that my mechanic said that would be impossible they admitted that they woul... view moredn`t know about further damage until after the time belt and water pump were replaced. if there was more damage they said it could be at least $2600. luckily my friends in philly hooked me up with someone who could do the whole job for $1600. except when i had my car towed out of pepboys they wanted $90 just for the diagnosis (something my regular mechanic confirmed could be done in 15 minutes by opening the hood).

Worst Place on Earth!!!
I took my van to Pep Boys on Columbus Blvd. for a check up since the temperature gauge didn`t seem to be working. It was something minor that shouldn`t have taken more than a few hours, but I was busy that day so I told them to call me when my car was ready and I would come back instead of waiting for it.
A few hours later, I still had not heard back so I called them only to be put on hold for over 15 minutes... view more before I hung up.
This went on for DAYS!!! Every time I called, they put me on hold for no less than 5 minutes at a time and when someone finally did pick up, they would end up transferring me and/or giving me the run around. They have not once, and I repeat NOT ONCE called me to give me an update. I have called them every day for the past 8 days now and my van is still not ready.
And then there`s the price...they have had to ""order"" a lot of parts which is making the bill get higher and higher every time I finally get someone on the phone. Then they charge for labor to install the parts, so there`s that cost as well. I`ve seen people wreck their cars and not only get them back sooner than this, but also for cheaper...
I run a delivery service and this van is one of my main delivery vehicles. As a result of Pep Boys, I have missed deadlines due to the lack of enough vehicles which has caused me to lose clients and in a time like this, I cannot afford that. I will never go to Pep Boys again.

False charges, misleading, long wait, rude
I spent 6 hours waiting for my car for vehicles and emission testing. My car passed in flying colors the year before, and I had only driven it 4500 miles in the interim.

This time, there were over 700 in charges for my car to pass. Some of the charges seemed bogus, and I was pretty skeptical. I still had to pay 60 dollars for them just to check the car.

I brough the car somewhere else and it passed ... view morein flying colors.

Also, they were smoking cigarrettes in my car. I never smoke, and my car smelled like a cloud of smoke when they were done with it. No one apologize, no one cared.

I would definitely avoid this place!
