Reviews:

Daughter`s car has been there for two visits. FIRST VISIT: replaced the brake caliper assembly on front right wheel. Also `cleaned the back brakes`, total charge $500. Car quit running two days later, due to a hole in a spark plug wire. Coincidence 1? - I went to Raleigh and got the car and replaced the spark plug wires. After 1000 miles, brakes started surging. I had my daughter bring the car home for inspect... view moreion in my shop. In that brake caliper, there was only one bolt holding it on (it takes two). Lug nuts had been installed improperly, which caused the surging. One lug nut was crossthreaded. I fixed. SECOND VISIT: Car running rough. Asked to call us before fixing. They didn`t... `fixed it` without asking, $350 for a coil replacement, a radiator cap? and a `head set` ?? Car quit running three hours later - Coincidence 2?. I went to Raleigh and got the car, brought it home. I pulled off the distributor cap and found lots of aluminum oxidation, retarding the spark. Car started up, but now needs a head gasket....

Great Little Shop!
If you`re like me, you always have a sense of hesitation when you decide to check out a new mechanic shop. Even if you know your way around a car, you can still feel condescended to when talking to professional mechanics. Well...not at Modern Service! From the time I walked in the door, I was treated as though I`d been going there for the past 30 years. Everyone I spoke to was knowledgeable, friendly and HONEST. ... view more I`ve never felt like Modern Service has tried to B.S. me. In fact, I recently had several repairs done and someone at another mechinc told me that I had several other problems with my car. Well, the guys at Modern Service checked behind the other mechanic and told me that there were some things that may need to be serviced/repaired later down the road, but tha tthey weren`t urgent. I could tell they didn`t just care about doing as many repairs as possible just to make a buck. Overall, I give this place 5/5 stars.

My advice: DON`T GO THERE!!!
I went to Modern Service because my car`s check engine light was on and when I went to another shop for inspection, I was told that there maybe a leak somewhere in my car. I`m not really educated when it comes to cars so I figured I could go to Modern Service since it was close by and they`d be able to check and let me know what I need to do. I get there and talked with the older gentleman behind the counter and he... view more tells me that he will ""check on it first to see where the leak is"" so I asked him specifically how much it will cost for him to do what he need to do or if there is a problem, how long it would take him to figure it out...He tells me that he will personally take a look at it first and it should take about 20-30min. then he will let me know if there is in fact a leek how much it would be for repair. Another guy finally gets to my car 30min later and I guess he started working on it...An hour and half later, another guy comes up and tells me they are still checking for a leak. Minutes go by and he comes back to tell me that they didn`t find a leak but there were two parts that they couldn`t get to and he was going to order the parts anyways and it would cost me $500.00. Then, he proceeded to tell me it will cost $90.00 or so for the labor they did for that hour and half. You can`t imagine how upset I was. And the guy that I spoke with originally tells me: ""yes, remember I told you that it would take an hour and you would be charged for labor...??"" I may not know about cars but I know when someone is trying to take me for a fool... I was so upset!! I told the guy if I had known he was going to make me wait for an hour and half to check on a leak that may or may not be there and charge me 90-something dollars I would have walked out along time ago. I told him I will NOT pay a dime... I don`t have that kind of money laying around and if he thought that he was going to charge for for something that was suppose to take 30min max it was NOT going to happen. So, he had no choice but to give me my car keys so I can leave... People, be aware!! These people have no problem taking advantage of you. They will try to get what ever money they can out of YOUR hard-earned money. My advice, DON`T GO THERE!!!

Good Reputable Shop
I`m new to the RTP area and had to find a shop to do some work on my car. Based on the reviews here, I decided to check out Modern Service. I have in the past, done a lot of work on my own car, so I have a good idea of how much parts and labor should cost. They charged a fair price for the work performed and were willing to use some parts that I had bought from a wrecker. Some shops will put up a lot of resistanc... view moree if you want to supply your own parts, so I appreciated that. After I got the car back, it developed a minor problem that may have been related to the work that had just been done, but there was no way to tell for sure. I took my car back in and they did the repair for free. To me, this is a classic example of how a good reputable shop operates. They could very easily have said the problem was not their fault and charged me 2 hours labor but they did it all for free, just to be on the safe side. Also, since I`m into fixing cars, I like to see what`s going on during a repair and the mechanic didn`t mind me nosing around a bit while he worked. I could tell he know what he was doing as he zoned right in on the problem and got it fixed up quickly

Fan for 26 years
Been using Modern Service ever since moving here in 1984. Ownership even changed and I`ve seen no downgrade in service. They always fix the problem and don`t jack up the price by finding something else wrong. Plus, when there`s nothing wrong they won`t gouge you. I`m even comfortable sending my wife there with car without having to check up on them. Thanks for many great years of service.

Best Mechanics Ever!!!!
I was really delightfully surprised that they were able to get my engine light off and fix the issue with my evap canister for about 150 less than another place in Cary! They were so good about explaining the issue and didn`t jack up the price of the part, not like the quote that I got from the other place. It`s great that they don`t try to rip you off, and being a woman walking into a service station, is just aski... view moreng for trouble. They were reasonable, and even did a diagnostic even though I had paid for it at the other mechanics and told them what needed to be fixed. They had to be sure that was all that was wrong with my car. They test drove my car and let me know that the shimmy bump bump is not my car but my tires and suggested that I purchase them soon since they were worn. I`m saving up and it`s my next major purchase. This place was recommended to me by 3 of my girl friends. And all of the old folk of Cary go here. They are so sweet and offer a nice diversion while waiting for my car. Very good service, very good price, very good mechanics! Oh, and it`s only a block from the drugstore, which has the best chocolate malts!

Modern Service Repair Shop
I started becoming a customer three years ago when I first moved to Cary. My automobile which arrived via transport carrier had some damage on one side and Modern Service repaired it promptly. Since then, I have been back for numerous repairs and maintenance issues. I have always been impressed by the friendliness of the staff and their honesty. Once, to save money, I had an oil change done at the AAA on Chapel Hill ... view moreRoad. They came back to alert me to the fact that there was an ""oil leaking onto engine"". Cost of repair approx. $280. I told them that I have my own repair shp and Modern thoroughly inspected my car and there was no leak in sight. I have been there on numerous occasions when my engine light was on. They always did something to turn it off and one day, one of the young mechanics had the courage to tell me why that light was on in the first place. Direct result of me not closing my gas tank properly. It must be closed to the point of hearing several clicking sound. How would I know? They have not charged me numerous times and I expressed my gratitude by buying gift certificates for the ""guys"" to go to lunch. They are honest, polite and not above explaining something in the simplest terms to me who is clueless about cars other than to make sure to get oil changes every 3,000 miles. During those visits, the guys will let me know what might need to be done now or at some time in the future. They don`t oversell a customer! They helped me buy a new car by checking it over (again free of charge) and inspecting it for me before leaving on a car trip. Mr. Wayne is the salt of the earth and I trust him completely. I should note, that I don`t trust easily. With Modern, I am protected from car shysters who might talk me into unnecessary repairs or take advantage by inflating prices. I recommend them to anyone I know and It should also be noted that I do not recommend lightly; only, when I am truly impressed.

Not the same Modern Service
Be forewarned, the owner with whom we`ve been happily dealing for many, many years is sick and not running the business any longer. The guys who are running it now are slipshod mechanics and crooks. They don`t do even basic diagnostics and mark up the parts they use well above retail price. They took advantage of a 78 year old woman. My mother brought her car into this shop recently because it was leaking power stee... view morering fluid onto the exhaust manifold and smoking a lot. The trick was, you had to drive the car around and make turns in order to make the fluid leak. These clowns replaced her oil pressure sender (which was also leaking - but leaking oil and no where near the exhaust manifold). They marked up the price of the parts well above even the more expensive retail and charged her a lot for labor. Obviously, the car was smoking once again the next day. We took it back and ripped them a new one about the entire experience. To their credit they did finally fix the car and did it for free - but they wouldn`t have unless we raised the kind of commotion we did. Once shouldn`t have to do that and certainly my mother, being the gentle Southern woman she is, wouldn`t have defended herself and would have been charged excessively again. Be careful who you trust and do NOT trust these guys.
