For sale is the coveted, long wheelbase, best and final year 912 coupe. With the wheelbase stretched to help tame the tail-wagging 6-cylinder, the 912 is more balanced than a 911 and has exceptional handling. The ’69 912 has always been praised for the way it stays glued in the twisties. Except for rebuild time, the chassis and motor have been together since the day the car was born; coincidentally the same day the Beatles released launched their Yellow Submarine album. Just felt compelled to throw that bit of trivia out there. To confirm some of this information see the Certificate of Authenticity.

This 912 spent the first third of its life touring the California coast  (see California registration and matching plate in photos) and in 1985 it arrived on the east coast of Virginia where it has been pampered with climate controlled garages, fanatical maintenance, and rain free drives. It remains registered for road use and is driven on special occasions only.

Drivetrain: With about 5,000 miles since its only rebuild that included new old stock heads and a matched set of Mahle pistons and barrels, the engine runs great and idles smoothly at very low rpms. Original Solex carbs were replaced with a rebuilt set, then a new set, then I tried Dell’Ortos. The second set of Webers finally made me happy. Call me fussy; I am. Just look at that carb photo! Precision Matters full flow oil filtration, an MSD ignition, Earl’s hoses and fittings were added for good measure. The transmission was concurrently rebuilt and shifts nicely with new synchros and no complaints.

Suspension: New torsion rod bushings front and rear, sway bars front and rear, and slightly lower than stock.

Brakes: 911 calipers and ventilated brakes on all 4 corners. Braided stainless lines. Pedal cluster re-bushed with bronze.

Body: The 901 body was single-handedly designed by Butzi Porsche. So yeah, it’s beautiful …and that goes clear to the bone. I have known and then owned this car for decades and have never detected any rust. The body and entire undercarriage are extremely clean and very solid. It can be jacked in all the right and wrong places with no worries. Weather stripping is also excellent. Paint is a Murano pearl laquer http://www.superstreetbike.com/features/murano-pearl-paint-back-day and after nearly 30 years has some crazing and few cracks, but shows very well. To be clear, the 912 is not painted with any paint ever offered by Nissan.

Interior: Charcoal gray carpet, black leather seats, dash, door panels, etc., are all in excellent condition. Radio is a modern upgrade (plays MP3s) with dials that match the gauge centers for a near original look. All gauges, switches, and indicator lights work. Clock is the original magnetic inductor type. It works but reliably loses a minute a day. Easily adjusts with the turn of a knob. It is way roomier and easier to enter/exit than my larger and way heavier 996.

Do Not Buy This Car as an investment just because values have been soaring, buy it because it will make you smile just to look at it and grin when you drive it.

Porsche Cayman, Boxster caught in GTS trim

Sat, 18 Jan 2014

A few months ago, we reported on some leaked information from an internal presentation for upcoming Porsche models. This included details about the Macan and the 911 Targa, which we now know to be true, but there was also talk about GTS versions of the Cayman and Boxster.
Well, it appears we're now getting our first look at these GTS models, as our spy photographers have just snapped a pair of Porsche prototypes out testing - one Cayman and one Boxster.
Right off the bat, we can see that both GTS-branded cars will get a slightly tweaked exterior with new fascias (bringing LED daytime running lights to the Cayman) and air diffusers at the rear. The true gem of these cars will be the added horsepower to the tune of 340 horsepower - a 15-hp bump. A manual transmission will likely be standard, as will Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

Listen to the Porsche Macan's exhaust note ahead of its LA debut

Fri, 08 Nov 2013

As if we need further proof that the Porsche Macan won't just be another small CUV, it'll be a small Porsche CUV, the German automaker has released a video of the vehicle's raucous exhaust note. In short, the Macan will sport a far racier soundtrack than most of its competitors.
The raspy sound coming from one of the Macan's two turbocharged V6 engines sounds great (the video isn't clear as to whether we're listening to the base 3.0-liter or the Turbo model's 3.6-liter engine), and it's accompanied by a nice crackle on overrun. It isn't like a 911 or other flat-six model, but it is more or less what we expect a Porsche to sound like. We'll have all the details on the newest member of the Porsche lineup when it debuts later this month at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show. Scroll down for an official press release from Porsche, as well as the video of the Macan, and be sure to turn your speakers up.

Will Roegge makes 4K art of Jeff Zwart's 911 build and run up Pikes Peak

Sun, 17 Aug 2014

Will Roegge has turned his camera on Jeff Zwart and provided another gem, this time documenting Zwart's run up Pikes Peak and BBI Autosport. Bertim Besha dropped out of high school, then worked his way up to founding his own shop, BBI, that gathers a crew of tuners who are just as fastidious about their work as the customers are about their cars.
They prepped the 991-series Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Turbo, the product of combining a 911 GT2 that was the most powerful car Zwart drove up the mountain with a GT3 Cup that Zwart thought had the best handling. Two TiAL turbos and a lot of fettling make for a 3.8-liter flat-six with 700 horsepower, 700 pound-feet of torque and a 7,800-rpm redline. Zwart drove it to a heartbreaking second place this year, finishing less than 1.2 seconds behind the Time Attack 1 class winner when his car suffered its first mechanical issue of the week.
The first video below covers Besha, BBI and the build, the second is Zwart's run. As if the visuals weren't enough, sit back and enjoy the shrieking of the "Hill Climb Special," which is what the constellation Sirius would sound like if it could bark.
