OVERVIEW

 

 

Yes, it is true. I literally go out of my way to find the nicest pickup trucks in the Country because I am a certifiable TRUCK NUT! I just love a well-done, fully restored classic truck, and think they are the perfect vehicle to add to any collection.

 

When Hank Groves, owner of the STREET ROD CENTER in Woodstock, IL, and part-time seasonal resident in our area made me aware that he was going to part with his magnificent, freshly completed FORD F1 show truck, I couldn’t buy it fast enough!

 

This is a PRO-BUILT, 100% fully restored and freshly completed truck less than 2 years old and with under 2,300 miles, 1300 or so of which were from Hank driving it to Florida from Illinois a few months ago.

DESCRIPTION

 

 

Known for his stunning 1932 Ford Roadsters which eek out of his nondescript shop in Woodstock, IL, Hank Groves and his team at STREET ROD CENTER are serious about turning out top-quality restorations and builds, with a money-is-no-object philosophy that lets them do whatever they need to create a masterpiece on wheels with each project.

 

When Hank first bought this truck, it was a frame, cab, and front fenders with a good title. The end result you see in the 100 EXTRA-LARGE photos below is the culmination of an almost two-year build that left nothing untouched, and created one of the finest examples of an F1 Truck I have ever personally seen.

 

The finish on this machine is PPG blended 2001 Chrysler Sapphire Blue, and it is STUNNING on the truck! Deep, rich, and wet looking, the finish is only about 2 years old, and still shows like it was just done.

 

Yes, if you get down on your hands and knees and start peeking at it with your snout an inch or two away, I am sure you will find a small stone chip, little scuff, or other blemish from being driven almost 2,300 miles, but NOTHING that sticks out, and needs attention called to it. Most sellers would simply say PERFECT, but I hate that word, so I will just say that you probably could some blemishes on the truck somewhere, but overall it presents like the show-ready truck it is.

 

The body has tons of little modifications and custom features that you may, or may not, notice, like the fact that the rear fenders were custom made to be 2” wider than stock, to give it an aggressive look and really cover up those 17” rims.

 

The antennae was hidden inside the passenger side rear bedside side, and is cleanly installed.

 

The rear tailgate was smoothed, and its unobtrusive pushbutton release and chains were hidden inside the bed for a cleaner look.

 

Custom LED brake and signal lights were encased inside the rear of the bedrolls.

 

The MAGNAFLOW exhaust tips exit in front of the rear wheels through custom made fender cut-outs.

 

The smoothed and painted bed floor is broken up by multiple show-polished stainless steel slats that match the ones on the running boards. The bed is protected by an all-weather SkidGuard bed mat from Protecto.

 

The tail gate was treated to hand striping, including the STREET ROD CENTER web address, and they were done OVER the clear, making them easily removable if you don’t like them.

 

All of the stainless trim on the truck is either new or fully restored, with the exception of the hood vents/opener which are original and show light patina. The rest show like new, including:

The custom chopped bumpers were show-chromed and installed closer to the body for a cleaner look.

 

All of the welting, weather strips and seals, fuzzies, and regulators were new as well.

 

Glass is new all around the truck, and shows zero issues anywhere.

 

Headlamps are retro-looking with much higher intensity than the stock units, and the LED tail lamps are tucked up close to the rear pan for a clean look, and super bright display.

 

Finally, the billet aluminum license plate frame tucks away when at shows, and comes down when driving thanks to vacuum assist.

 

Overall, the exterior of the truck is a 9.70 out of 10, because I don’t think AY car is ever perfect. This one comes REALLY, REALLY close to it, as the 100 EXTRA-LARGE photos below will attest.

 

The stock frame on the truck was stripped, walnut blasted, trimmed and de-tabbed, and then painted black before being treated to all new suspension components, drop spindles up front, a lowering kit in the rear, new springs and shocks all around, an 8” FORD rear with 3.27 gearing, a “REAL” HEIDT’S Mustang II front end with power rack, and disc brakes.

 

It is all neat and finished, but does have almost 2,300 miles of road grime under it, so plan on power-washing, touching up, and wiping everything down before you grab the car show mirrors.

 

A FORD C4 transmission was built from the case in with all new internals, seals, and gaskets, and it shifts fantastically thanks to a mild shift kit, and LOKAR shifter.

 

It is matched to a FORD 302 V8 that was a fresh, bare-block build with an eye towards longevity, reliability, and ease of maintenance. It has a mild cam, WEIAND intake, 600cfm EDELBROCK carb topped with a K&N show-polished Butterfly air intake.

 

Chrome valve covers and other billet and chrome goodies trim it out nicely, and a custom fabricated aluminum radiator with a HUGE electric fan, alongside tranny and oil coolers, keeps this machine cool even in the hot Florida sun.

 

A modern serpentine belt system is simple to maintain and line-up, and gets the needed energy to all the accessories, while and EDELBROCK electric fuel pump and new lines gets the fuel from the new gas tank to the motor with ease.

 

Professional grade distributor, alternator, and other parts all work together to create a motor that has more than enough power, without sacrificing long-term reliability and ease of maintenance.

 

Custom headers take the exhaust fumes on a trip through the custom fabricated stainless exhaust and through a set of MAGNAFLOW mufflers before expelling them out of the aforementioned side exhaust fender cut-outs. The truck sounds EXCELLENT, with a throaty burble at idle, and a nice bark under acceleration.

 

All that power transfers to the road courtesy of a stunning set of show-polished STREETER SHOWWHEELS rims that are like new from every angle. They are wrapped in modern street radials sized 235/45R17 up front, and 235/60R17 tires in the rear. All of the tires have just under 2,300 miles, no damage, and no prior repairs or plugs.

 

The truck starts, idles, and runs fantastic, with no known issues at this time.

Snick it into gear and hit the gas, and it will head you down the road in a hurry!

 

It has plenty of power on hand to “smoke the tires” if you want to, but is as mild mannered as a newer V8 pickup for everyday use.

 

I have driven the truck about 110 miles, in a mix of both city and highway driving, and it is a stable, easy to steer, solid handling truck with a nice ride.

 

Braking is solid and sure, and it stops without any excessive fade, modulation, or pulling.

 

It does NOT get hot, thanks to the gigantic electric fan and aluminum racing radiator.

 

It is very easy to drive, and I think anyone would feel confident behind the wheel of this truck.

 

Speaking of being behind the wheel…. The best seats in the house for enjoying this incredible truck are inside the completely redone cab.

 

The clean and painted dash looks magnificent, and is fitted with a custom set of DOLPHIN gauges with a cream backround, black lettering, and orange dots. The gauges are, from left to right, SPEEDO/ODOMETER, VOLT, OIL, FUEL, WATER. They all appear to be functional and accurate, although I have not personally calibrated each one.

 

Also on the dash are switchgear for HORN, ELECTRIC WIPERS, LIGHTS, MASTER A/C SWITCH, and the IGNITION.

 

The center of the dash is home to the massive chrome FORD logo with speaker cover, that looks like new, and really sets of the inside of the cab.

 

The ashtray is still functional, but no one has ever smoked in the truck since the total restoration.

 

Glove box opens to reveal the hidden KENWOOD KOC2484 head unit with AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA/USB INPUT/ AUDIO INPUT. The system sounds great, and can play practically any medium of music currently available, and charge items from the USB as well.

 

Under the dash, controls for the fan and temperature are mounted in a custom housing. Everything works as it should to provide cold air, and hot heat for the occupants of the cab.

 

Dual power driver and passenger seats from a 2004 LEXUS GS sedan were recovered in deluxe leather with custom hand stitching. They are both 6-way power adjustable with power recline, and look perfect in the truck. The seats are like new, and show only the correct patina expensive aged leather acquires.

 

The same hide and stitching techniques were applied to the door panels, kick panels, visors, headliner, and full back trim panel as well. They are all in like-new condition with no signs of damage, wear, seam pulls or issues.

 

Thick, banded German weave carpeting was custom cut for the truck, and installed over layers of heat and soundproofing material. It is full carpeting, and is in exceptional condition with no issues or damage.

 

A set of matching floor mats was also made for the truck, and they are in exceptional condition as well.

 

A LOKAR tall shifter with billet topper was installed with a matching leather boot and polished trim ring.

 

LOKAR also supplied the vintage spoon style gas pedal, while the brake pedal is a NOS vintage FORD unit.

 

The original FORD steering column was smooth and refinished, and topped with a 3-spoke custom steering wheel that looks great, and is much smaller in diameter than the stock unit, allowing for more room in the cab.

 

New NOS window rollers and door pulls look fantastic, and the original vent window handles and rearview mirror were refinished and show well too.

 

The truck is equipped with 3-point shoulder belt equipped seat belts, and they are correctly installed for safety and durability.

 

This is a really, really nice F1 pickup, and it is ready for someone who will drive, enjoy, show, and shine it.

 

You can fly in and drive home if you want, or I can assist in arranging quality, inexpensive transport, as we ship vehicles all across the globe on a monthly basis.
