1949 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible

Chrysler, always considered one of the big three with Ford and General Motors was the company that was always remained at the bottom of the big three list in terms of sales volume.  Post-war Chrysler was known for its conservative styling and engineering but was considered to be the top of the line of the big three in terms of quality of craftsmanship for their cars.

The head of Chrysler Corporation of course was K. T. Keller, he was a no nonsense president who had taken over from Walter Chrysler, the founder of the Chrysler, in 1935.  Keller was always one to shun fad and instead focused on a tall, roomy car that a man could easily enter and drive while wearing his fedora.

The 1949 Chrysler convertible was kind of a hybrid for Mr. Keller in the sense that it had lots of style and yet plenty of room and the quality of production was that of the high level that Chrysler had become known for post war years.  The under the hood horsepower seemed to be under rated and the car actually performed very well.

There is a reason that the New Yorker made its mark as the longest running American car nameplate because these cars have always been synonymous with luxury and was Chrysler’s flagship model.  In 1949 the New Yorker used Chrysler Corporation’s new postwar body with pontoon and three-box styling with a 323.5 cid straight eight coupled to Fluid Drive and the Prestomatic four-speed semi-automatic.  Wheelbase was increased to 131.5.

When it comes to collecting the sophisticated car collectors have become somewhat bored with the 1950s car and have been turning to the cars of the late 30s and postwar 40s cars.  They seem to have a certain attraction and have not been seen very much at the shows so they are always fresh and interesting.  A car like this convertible will always attract a crowd.

The owner of this car is an elderly gentleman who has made part of his life work to care for this car and improve it and occasionally show it.  The car is capable of a cross-country trip and it makes an unbelievable impression in person.  Just check out the pictures and you will realize that this could be a car that you need in your collection.  It is a great car that will give you plenty of pride of ownership and it is also a car that will impress everybody at the Saturday night drive in.  This is also a car that you can take on a few hundred-mile tour and you will find it to be very dependable and comfortable.

If you have grown a little jaded with all the fifties and sixties cars that you have been seeing constantly for the last three decades at just about every car show you may find this a very refreshing car to add to your collection.  You can bid with confidence.
