1979 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser

I buy/sell big 4X4 oil industry fleet trucks which is not super exciting but sometimes I get my hands on older 4x4 vehicles that I know and love, like this FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser. I have owned 40s, 60s, 80s and 100 series cruisers, close to 70 in the last 32 years. These are fantastic, heavy duty 4x4 vehicles, very popular here in the high (no pun intended) Colorado mountains. If you are local (and a real buyer) I urge you to inspect this Land Cruiser in person, it will impress you as it does me, it deserves a new owner that will take care of and appreciate it.

The Story:

I found this Land Cruiser sitting in a yard off a rural road way down in New Mexico, it hadn't been started or driven in 6 years. My mechanic said this rig appears to have been very well taken care before being parked, the over all condition and parts on this Toyota supports his opinion. This FJ40 is very tight, it starts, runs and drives great, this rig will make someone very, very happy to own it.

My List Of Repairs:

we drained the fuel tank of old gas and refilled

changed the oil and filter

dismantled, inspected, cleaned and adjusted the front/rear brakes, they are in like new condition

replaced the spark plugs and tuned the carb for altitude

Some things I see in the log book that were done in the past 11 years:

July 03 purchased with 76400 orig miles, replaces steering knuckles, clutch, master/slave cylinder, ignition switch, changed fluids and had it painted.

Oct. 04 Installed new flowmaster muffler.

Feb. 05 installed new alternator.

Mar. 05 installed new oils seals in transfer case.

Nov. 05 installed new heater valve.

Jan. 06 installed new radiator.

Mar. 06 installed new plugs, points, timed, tuned, installed new back up lights, dash lights.

Apr. 06 installed new rotors, brake pads, master cylinder, flushed and replaced fluid.

May 06 installed rear brake cylinders and pads, new windshield washer tank and pump.

June 08 previous owner moved to Hawaii and left the cruiser parked/stored in NM where I found it.

It look like the previous owner always ran Castrol oil, used quality filters and parts etc.

and I'm sure there's more that I'm missing...

The Good Stuff:

Equipped with factory power steering, a perfect hard top with the straightest rain gutters I have ever seen, uncut rear fenders, stock drive train, the 31/10.5/15 Khumo Road Venture AT tires on chrome wheels are like new, the interior is very stock, non smoker, has the original headliner in excellent condition, the factory radio hole has not been cut, and everything works as it should. There is a very rare Conferr (remember them? they built really good heavy duty old school off road gear) rear seat with built in tool box (tool box has some spare belts, parts etc. inside) even has the arm rests which are harder to find than the seat itself. The heavy duty front bumper is from Cool Cruisers in Texas, KC supplied the off road lights, has headlight guards, a Conferr super heavy duty rear bumper, all very good stuff. This cruiser has an engine performance kit installed consisting of an after market Weber carb/air cleaner, header and if I remember right, a distributor.

The Not So Good Stuff:

If you are not familiar with how a big, heavy duty FJ40 runs, drives, handles and stops, I urge you to educate yourself (in real life, drive some, not on the net) before you buy this or any other FJ40. This Land Cruiser is 36 years old so there are some negative things to be expected, most in this case are only cosmetic. I am being very "nit-picky" on some of this stuff no matter how small because I value my reputation/feedback and no one likes "surprises" buying a car on-line. I'm not perfect and things can fail but I try to go above and beyond, am super blunt and candid, my feedback and reputation speak for themselves.

there are cracks and "wear" on the front seats (Specter Off Road sells excellent replacement seat covers, see photos)

there is some shallow dent, scrape, damage to the lower drivers door and below, my PDR guy is looking it over tomorrow (see photos)

there is some chipping and scratches on the front bumper (see photos)

the true mileage is unknown, the 10th dial rotates but the odometer does not. I have a detailed logbook where the previous owner indicates he "reset" it, it appears to be a low mile cruiser but I'm still trying to figure out what he did and when.

there is a hole cut in the frame where the exhaust was routed to protect it (see photos)

there is some rust/corrosion in the usual and well known 79 FJ40 places, under floor boards, a little inside rear corners etc (see photos)

all of the original smog equipment has been removed, if you live in a big city where a smog test is required, run away or move up here to the high mountains (see photos)

the factory door stops are missing, have been replaced with some very nice yellow rope (see photos)

Aside from the above list, some overall age related, normal used old Cruiser type stuff this is an excellent rig, super hard to find a 79 or newer and will make someone very happy to own it...

Please read all of the ad above, enlarge and study the photos before calling me with questions or offers. I'll always give you blunt, candid answers, I am happy to photograph anything you would like to see closer as time allows. I reserve the right to end this auction at anytime without warning as this Land Cruiser is for sale locally.
