1958 Porsche 356A Sunroof Coupe Silver Black

1958 Porsche 356A Sunroof Coupe

Up for NO RESERVE auction! Very rare 1958 Porsche 356A T2 Sunroof Coupe with original floors, longitudinals and battery box. Wearing older repaint in original Silver Metallic. Black leatherette interior. California car. Upgraded with newly rebuilt 912 engine and 741 gearbox. New brakes. Original US bumpers. Original glass. An excellent and award winning driver that pulls the crowds away from the concourse restored cars at any show. For years the 356A has been the preferred body style for the 356. Nice 356A Coupes are now very difficult to locate, let alone one with a factory sunroof.

The following is a detailed description of the car, along with over 100 photos and 1 video in the Engine and Transmission section below. iPad and iPhone viewers can access the photos by clicking HERE. Please email or call us at 415-205-0716, if you have any questions.

Body, Trim and Paint

The upper body shows no serious rust.  Opening panel gaps are very good with the exception of the hood which has a  kink on the driver side.  Hood and doors are originals.  Rear deck lid is not the original and rear body panel shows evidence of an older clip repair. The chassis number is 104205 which is  stamped in the trunk floor, plate on door hinge cover and chassis plate riveted next to the left of the gas tank. Original gas tank is date coded 5/58 and is in good condition. Looking at the undercarriage, the battery box appears to be original and solid inside with some of the typical rust at the outside bottom. It's rare to see an original battery box. The floors are original with only some   minor surface rust on the inside surface of the passenger side rear floor. Closing panels are solid. Overall, the  undercarriage is very solid and it's quite rare to find a 356A with it's original undercarriage.

All major trim parts are present and in original condition. All chrome parts are present and original. All glass is original with correct Sigla and Sekurit markings and is clear with no obvious chips. Front and rear light lenses show no cracks. Rubber weatherstripping is present and in  fair condition.

The original color was and currently still is Silver Metallic. The paint is an older weathered paint job that gives the car that just right survivor look that attracts the crowds at local shows. The car has garnered a Peoples Choice award in the last two shows it's been entered in. Leave your concourse show queen in the garage and enjoy the attention you'll get driving this one down to the local coffee shop.

Interior

The  interior  is Black leatherette, which is likely the original color.  The interior  is in fair condition overall. Seats are supportive and are date coded 4/58 and 6/58. The gauges, switches and knobs on the face of the dash are all present. All interior door handles are present.

Electricals

Headlights (low and high beams), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, wipers and horns are functional. Generator and oil pressure warning lights are functional. The odometer is functional and currently reads   80,427 miles.  The electrical system is the correct 6 volt system.

Engine and Transmission

A newly rebuilt 912 engine (number 830045) is currently installed with only 200 miles driven since the rebuild. The rebuild was compeleted by a very experienced local 356 restorer. A new set of NOS NPR pistons were installed during the rebuild to increase displacement to 1720cc.  Engine starts easily, holds a steady idle and accelerates smoothly with excellent power. A pair of rebuilt  Zenith NDIX carburetors are  installed and provide  smooth power progression.  The prior owner purposely didn't repaint the engine components during the rebuild as his goal was to keep that "barn find" look. Note that the rear engine tin is not currently installed, but will be installed prior to delivery to the next owner.

A later 741 type transmission with improved syncros is installed. The gearbox is mated to a correct 644 nose.  The transmission shifts smoothly into every gear with no grinding or unusual noises.

Suspension, Wheels, Tires and Brakes

Steering is light and precise as it should be. This is a T2 series 356A, so steering response is much improved with the ZF steering box. Front end is nice and tight with no vibration. All four  shocks are in good condition.  Wheel alignment is correct with no wheel vibration at high speed.

Correct size 15" x 4.5" chrome wheels are installed with the correct Normal baby moon hubcaps. Spare chrome wheel is included.

Four radial tires are installed  and are in  good condition with no cracks and good tread.

The brakes are functioning well with new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, hoses and brakes shoes installed. The emergency brake is correctly adjusted and holds tight.
