Facts & Features

In 1987 (1988 for the US market), Toyota introduced a supercharged engine for the MR2. Based on the same block and head, the 4A-GZE was equipped with a small Roots-type supercharger and a Denso intercooler. T-VIS was eliminated and the compression ratio was lowered to 8:1. It produced 145 horsepower (108 kW) and 140 pound-feet (190 N·m) and accelerated the small car from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 6.5 to 7.0s. The supercharger was belt-driven but actuated by an electromagnetic clutch, so that it would not be driven except when needed, increasing fuel economy. Curb weight was 2,494 pounds (1,131 kg) for supercharged models, a new, stronger transmission, fuel selector switch was also added in some markets, to allow the car to run on regular unleaded if required to. In addition to the new engine, the MR2 SC was also equipped with stiffer springs, and received special "tear-drop" aluminum wheels. The engine cover had two raised vents (only one of which was functional) that visually distinguished it from the naturally aspirated models. It was also labeled "Supercharged" on the rear trunk and body moldings behind both doors. This model was never offered in European or Australian markets, although some cars were privately imported.

MR2's legacy

The press received the AW11 with open arms and praised its innovation, great feeling, and responsive engine. American car magazines Road & Track and Car and Driver both chose the MR2 on their lists of ten best cars which included some tough competition, such as the Ferrari Testarossa. The Australian Wheels magazine chose the 1988 MR2 as its favorite sports car. The MR2 was Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year. (It is worth noting that the MR2 was not eligible for the Car of the Year award, because only vehicles produced in the US were eligible until 1999. The 1985 winner, the Volkswagen GTI, was produced in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania.) The MR2 was also on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1986 and 1987. In 2004, Sports Car International ranked the MR2 in the top ten on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s.

1988 Supercharged Toyota MR2. One of less than 2000 imported into the united states in 1988.

“Road and track still declares this car one of the best sports cars ever made”

Here is an article from the Chicago Sun Times : October 26,2003 The 1985-89
Toyota MR2 sports car was Japan's first mid-engine production auto and had the ingredients to be one of few autos from the 1980s that are classics. The race-style mid-engine design contributed to the MR2's nimble handling. The little two-seat MR2 put serious heat on other affordable two-seaters. It was one of the best sports cars -- regardless of price. Road & Track magazine called the supercharged 145- horsepower version of the 1988 MR2 one of the world's 10 best cars, along with the $100,000-plus Ferrari Testarossa. The supercharged MR2 hit 60 mph in just 6.8 seconds, The supercharged model arrived for 1988 saying it "is the essence of sporting fun: quick, agile and always eager for a fling. It has the soul of a Ferrari factored down to four-cylinder affordability."

MR2 VS Ferrari

A quarter of a century has passed since the first issue of AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE arrived on newsstands. It seems like only yesterday to many of us, but surely that cannot be so, since the 1986 Toyota MR2 that graced the cover of our premiere issue has migrated to the back of the book. Once a cover model, the first-generation MR2 is now a Collectible Classic.

The AW11-chassis MR2 It had already been on the market for more than a year, but that made it a spring chicken compared with the Ferrari 308 parked next to it, which was in its twelfth year. In that first issue, we did the unthinkable, pitting a Toyota MR2 against a $54,300 Ferrari. Then, we lost our minds and declared the Japanese car the winner.

"God help the Italians if the Japanese ever decide to build supercars," wrote David E. Davis, Jr. Time, the Acura NSX, and the Lexus LFA would prove that divine assistance is not yet required for Ferrari, but it's still true that the MR2 was a very special car. Special because of its looks, performance, mid-engine layout, and, above all, because it was so unexpected, coming from a conservative company like Toyota.

Still, the MR2 was very much a Toyota. Whereas the cabins of other mid-engine cars were crammed with more compromises than cubic feet, the MR2's cockpit was a model of ergonomic perfection, if somewhat less than aesthetically perfect. The dashboard's multiple pods and appendages appear, in retrospect, to be an attempt to torture interior designers, but all of the important controls are placed within easy reach, the view out is better than that from a modern convertible with its top down.

Despite the MR2's microscopic dimensions, the cabin feels quite spacious. Highly adjustable seats are so supremely comfortable that you've no choice but to forgive the oh-so-1980s scrunchie-accordion-rubber doohickeys on the headrest uprights. The pedals are placed properly in front of the driver (rather than pushed toward the right because of wheel-well intrusion, as in many mid-engine cars). The two-spoke steering wheel was pretty back then, but it's attached to something we seldom see in cars today: a manual steering rack. With fewer than 1100 pounds on the front axle, the steering isn't unduly heavy, even at parking-lot speeds, but flick the wheel on a back road and the MR2 reacts with notable aplomb. That is no surprise, since Toyota recruited Dan Gurney to help with the final chassis tuning.
