1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello

This is an absolutely stunning 1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello. The 550 was Ferrari's return to the classic front-engine V12 layout, not seen since the 365 GTB/4 Daytona in the early Seventies. The V12 engine is an absolute masterpiece, producing 485 hp and 419 lb-ft of torque, with an almost completely flat torque band and that inimitable Ferrari V12 sound. A perfect 50/50 weight distribution creates a wonderful handling balance, which only gets better at speed. Finally, the 550 was the last Ferrari to have a 6-speed gated manual gearbox as the only transmission choice, before Ferrari started the inexorable transition to automated manuals.

This particular 550 is a wonderful example of this iconic car. In a very rare color combination of Le Mans Blue over luxurious Crema interior, this 550 has only covered 24,760 miles. With the exception of a few very tiny rock chips on the front of the car, the paint is in almost flawless condition. There are no "sticky" plastic parts in the interior, and there is no shrinkage of the dash leather; two common problems with these cars.

Mechanically, this car is also in fantastic shape. When we received the car, we had Sphere Motorsports do a complete annual service, including all fluid and filter changes, so all maintenance is up to date. The last major belt service was done in 2011, so the next belt service is not due until 2016. The Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires are a couple of years old, but are at almost new tread depth.

The only aftermarket modification to the car is a Tubi exhaust system, almost a "must have" on the 550/575. With the Tubi, the V12 can actually be heard, at idle sounds deep and rich, and at full bore just sounds amazing.

I have personally driven this car, and it is an extremely solid car. The engine is incredibly strong and keeps pulling like a freight train to redline. Steering is sharp and true, the handling is perfect, and the powerful brakes stop the car on a dime. There are no rattles or other untoward noises.

Ferrari 550 prices have leveled off over the past few years, and are now starting to increase for quality examples. The model now has the recognition of discriminating buyers, as a true grand tourer in the classic Ferrari tradition, and is widely seen as a very collectible Ferrari in future years.
