INTRODUCTION TO CLASSIC CARS LTD. EBAY AUCTIONS

Thank you for visiting our eBay auction. We appreciate your interest in the Porsche 914 "2.0" and feel that it is important that we provide some basic information relative to our business philosophy and utilization of eBay to offer our collectible & classic vehicles to a worldwide audience.

We must say that we have a long standing "relationship" with Porsche 914's. We have owned several and our good friends have, as well. Good 2.0 Liter examples are great fun to drive and provide excellent handling and solid performance. At just over 2,100 lbs, the car is light and with the 2.0 liter has very good power to weight ratio. The mid-engine design makes them handle extremely well and subtle and tasteful mechanical improvements make this particular 914 a tremendous car to drive. We're showing our age, but we were able to drive a friend's 914 when he purchased it new and have loved the car ever since.

For over to 20 years, Classic Cars Ltd. has operated a "Brick & Mortar" showroom located in Pleasanton, CA. just outside of San Francisco California. We have sold hundreds of unique, classic and collectible vehicles and regularly deal with buyer's that have not had the experience of purchasing a large (both physically, and monetarily!) item on eBay, or through an Internet source. Our eBay feedback is 100% positive on all vehicle sales from customers around the globe and is a reflection of our commitment to accurate, complete, and thorough vehicle descriptions.

While we have had comments about the length of our narrative on each vehicle, most serious buyers appreciate the detailed photographs and descriptions and believe that "more is better." However, if you are looking for a brief summary of the vehicle, please view the photographs and scroll to the very bottom of the listing where you will find a summary of the car for sale including; Make, model, mileage, specifications, etc.

Please keep in mind that we will gladly...

1. Answer any questions over the telephone and take the time to guide prospective customers through the buying process (925-846-1451).

2. Assist with locating a quality, suitable transporter at very competitive prices.

3. Provide proof that we are licensed, bonded (for the financial transaction), fully insured, and operate from an established showroom environment, not a warehouse or a private home.

4. Provide feedback from previous buyers, and specific references for vehicle purchases in your area (we also ask that you view our detailed eBay feedback by clicking on the number to the right of the eBay user name)

5. Offer additional information including specific photographs or clarification of any part of our description of the vehicle

Thank you again, please let me know if I can be of assistance.

Cheers and Happy "eBaying"!

I. PORSCHE 914 - A BRIEF HISTORY

By the late 1960s, both Volkswagen and Porsche were in need of new models; Porsche was looking for a replacement for the Porsche 912, and Volkswagen wanted a new range-topping sports coupe to replace the Karmann Ghia. At the time, the majority of Volkswagen's developmental work was handled by Porsche, part of a setup that dated back to Porsche's founding; Volkswagen needed to contract out one last project to Porsche to fulfill the contract, and decided to make this that project. Ferdinand Pi?ch, who was in charge of research and development at Porsche, was put in charge of the 914 project.

Porsche decided during development that having Volkswagen and Porsche models sharing the same body would be risky for business in the American market, and convinced Volkswagen to allow them to sell both versions as Porsches in North America.

It appeared to be a perfect win-win situation. On March 1, 1968 the first 914 prototype was presented. However, development became complicated after the death of Volkswagen's chairman, Heinz Nordhoff, on April 12, 1968. His successor, Kurt Lotz, was not connected with the Porsche dynasty and the verbal agreement between Volkswagen and Porsche fell apart.

In Lotz's opinion, Volkswagen had all rights to the model, and no incentive to share it with Porsche if they would not share in tooling expenses. With this decision, the price and marketing concept for the 914 had failed before series production had even begun.

Volkswagen versions originally came with an 80 hp fuel-injected 1.7 L flat-4 engine based on the Volkswagen air cooled engine. Later models received an increase in engine size along with fuel injection for US models to improve performance, reliability and efficiency. The engine was placed amidships, in front of a version of the 1969 911's "901" gearbox set up for mid-engine operation. Karmann manufactured the rolling chassis at their own plant and installed most components in house.

A Volkswagen-Porsche joint venture, Volkswagen of America, handled export to the U.S., where 914's were badged and sold as Porsches. In Europe, the four-cylinder cars were sold as Porsches - Volkswagens at VW dealerships.

The 914 was Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1970 and a 914 was piloted by Frenchmen Claude Ballot-Lena and Guy Chasseuil won the GTS class and finished sixth overall at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans.

IV. 1974 PORSCHE 914 - CONDITION SUMMARY

We regularly look for exceptional Porsche 914's and, while we come across them from time to time, frankly, most of the cars do not meet our standards. Most off the examples are cars that we would not consider for any price and include those that have been mistreated, modified with inexpensive / incorrect components, or are fitted with small, less desirable (1.7 or 1.8 liter) engines. Additionally, as Porsche enthusiasts, we pass on any car with significant rust that resulted in many 914's (especially cars that spent time in "Salt Regions" around the world). Still other Porsche's show signs of repaired (or existing) body damage of obvious inexpensive "$39.95 re-paint specials" in previous years. We know that our customers are looking for the "Best of the Best" in 914's and we are confident that this example will exceed the expectations of the most discriminating Porsche aficionado / enthusiast.

Not only is this Porsche 914 a documented, limited owner California car, it is virtually rust free as the extensive undercarriage and exterior / trunk & engine photos reflect. Also, the car is finished in a rarely seen optional Porsche black exterior that is absolutely striking. This is anything but a "typical" re-paint on a Porsche 914. Considerable effort went into the preparation of an original, totally straight damage free Porsche to ensure that the end result of the paint and body exceeded the high standards of the professional auto enthusiast who commissioned the work. The body was hand blocked several times resulting in exceptionally straight sides / panels and a brilliant, high quality complete repaint.

The black interior and top add a beautiful contrast to the cars excellent "Patina free California" chrome and aluminum trim. While the car received a re-paint several years ago, it was completed by a Bay area custom paint shop to a very high level as a "complete" with all the body panels being removed and all trim removed and replaced as required. The paint is truly exceptional with a laser straight body that is free from all but the most insignificant imperfections that requires close inspection to be noticed even by the most critical "Porschephille." The interior received a total and professional restoration and is simply the nicest that we have seen on a 914..more on that later in the write-up.

The exterior trim is in superb "California Condition", free from ANY rust and any signs of pitting. The period style alloy wheels are very attractive and are also in beautiful condition. The tires show virtually no wear and are high quality P185/65 15" radials that fill the wheel wells but do not rub or interfere with the wheel well openings.

The panel fit on the doors is and the gaps on the front and rear trunk are simply as good as it gets. There is none of the often times seen, characteristic "bowing" in the front hood from larger items being placed in the trunk. The hoods (front & rear) open and close properly and both have remote releases inside of the vehicle.

The car is extremely solid and the exterior is free from any major body damage. The Porsche is virtually free from door dings, scratches and damage to the body. Any very minor imperfections are just that, very minor and require close, critical inspection to be noticed. They are difficult to locate and in no way detract from the appearance of the car. This car rates extremely high by all of the Porsche enthusiasts that have seen the car.

It is important to note that this 914 is totally free from any signs of rust through, rot or body rust. It is as rust free as any 914 example that we have seen including the rocker panels, fenders, engine bay area and other typical 914 rust prone areas. The car reflects a VERY high level of care by enthusiasts and has seen indoor storage for its entire life.

The interior is in unbelievable condition having been 100% restored by a professional upholstery shop at considerable expense. The entire interior remains in the factory correct configuration with the exception of a few items limited to the smaller and very attractive Momo steering wheel and a wonderful in-dash mounted sound system powered by an Alpine CDA-9851 receiver that is MP#, WMA and satellite ready. The Porsche is also fitted with a multi-disc CD player mounted in the front trunk area. It is in absolutely fantastic condition with no seat tears, damage to the door panels, center console or dash. Even upon close critical inspection it is difficult to locate minor imperfections. The dash is totally free from cracks and imperfections; an unusual "reality" for 914's!

The interior carpet was also replaced with high quality material and remains in virtually perfect condition. The Targa top was completely re-done including new seals. It is in very good condition and all of the fasteners are in place and work properly.

Originally, the 914 received its required and recommended service at the local Porsche dealership. Subsequently, the car was serviced by Porsche specialists with receipts in the file documenting the work.
The previous owner, an automotive professional, used his many resources to maintain the car and reported that the engine and other major components were completely rebuilt approximately 20,000 miles ago. Certainly the inspection of the mechanical condition of the cars major components (engine, transmission, clutch, brakes, & steering) gives credence to this statement. The 914 is not a "leaker" and the underside of the car remains free from excessive oil and fluids often found on poorly maintained Porsche 914's.

The recent inspection (within 100 miles) by one of the Bay area premier Porsche specialists revealed that this Porsche 914 represented a rust free car that has had excellent maintenance during the course of its life. The underside is straight, free from damage and rust. A safety inspection was performed and the car passed with no issues including brakes, steering components, lighting systems, tires, exhaust system and other required California safety items.

This particular Porsche 914 is a great car to drive! The 914 starts immediately whether cold or warm and, with the 2.0 liter engine, produces considerably more power than the smaller displacement 914's. The power is smooth throughout the rev range and the shift lever operates properly as do all of the "syncros" in upshifts and downshifts. Even the characteristically weak first gear can be used for downshifts at reasonably high speeds. There are no signs of weakness in the cars Porsche "901" factory fitted transmission. Unlike many examples of modified 914's, this car retains the factory fitted fuel injection system not unreliable, incorrect aftermarket carburetors.

The brakes are excellent and stop the car straight and sure with a functional hand brake. The steering is responsive and light as was typical on the mid-engine 914. There is no noise in the drive-line, the clutch engages properly and does not slip, chatter or exhibit any problems. The car comes with a file of receipts and registration slips that document repairs and, most important, the cars long time California lineage.

The odometer currently reads 22,239 miles and the odometer is functional. Based on the excellent condition of the car's interior, body and overall condition this 914 2.0 certainly shows like a car with just over 100,000 California miles (actually a car with 50,000 miles!) but, given the fact that it is 40~ years old we are unable to certify the miles. However, we will be the providing the owner with copies of the receipts that document maintenance / repairs over the years.

A significant amount has been invested in this car to make it the nicest 914 that we have had in 20 years. While the Porsche 914 remains one of the more affordable Porsche's of the 1970's they have been targeted by many Porsche experts as cars (especially the original correct 2.0 liter cars) that are sure to continue to appreciate in the collector car marketplace. The car is offered at a very fair price considering its superb overall condition, California lineage and long term ownership history.

Please contact us at 925-846-1451 if we can answer any questions.

V. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER

- As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to:

- How much experience do they have with collector cars?

- How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive eBay feedback)?

- How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle?

- Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance?

- Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction?

- What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license?

- Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances?

- Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation?

- Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
