1948 MG TC Roadster

The MGTC is the quintessential British sports car that started an American love-affair that lasted for generations. Despite the slump nearly all automakers faced at the end of WWII, the British manufacturers found a niche in the market – American GIs with military pay in their pockets and an eye for foreign sports cars. MG capitalized on this niche, using essentially recycled parts and designs from their pre-war cars to create a car that stole the hearts of American enthusiasts and led to an unprecedented production of 10,000 TC models. The result was a car that has remained instantly recognizable 70 years later.

Upon first inspection, it is clear that this particular example was restored relatively recently. The plush leather interior is brand new and gorgeous. Unfortunately, the car’s previous owner passed away and it sat in the garage under a cover for a few years. When the TC arrived at our shop we undertook a sensitive recommissioning to get her back to the state in which she went into the garage after the restoration.

Our work included taking the head off, replacing the valves and seats, rebuilding the SU carburetors, and replacing the wheel cylinders and the brake lines, as well as general maintenance like replacing the fluids etc., before we fired her up and put her back on the road. The result is a reliable British classic that is ready to pass into its next long-term owners hands and promises many years of enjoyment. All the work has been done to make a dependable example. The car drives exceptionally well – flows smoothly through all 4 gears and maintains good oil pressure. The interior is well-preserved and luxurious and the supple leather seats and the canvas top are in smart shape. This car also comes with 5 new tires – a product of the previous restoration – as well as a number of other new parts.

Unfortunately, the repaint was not a bare-metal job. The result is a presentable British classic that looks great from 5 feet, but that doesn’t live up to the level of scrutiny as the carefully restored interior. Although there are some imperfections in the paint, they could be drastically improved with just a wet-sand and a buff. Although the car will likely never be a concourse example, it is an attractive car that can be driven, enjoyed and shown with pride. Very few British sports cars attract the attention that an MGTC does, and at a time when pre-war British sports cars are selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars, this classic model, that turns 70 next year, offers the same journey back in time for a fraction of the price. With concourse examples trading hands for $45,000.00, this clean, presentable, honest car represents a relative bargain at the price of $28,500.00.
