Overview

odometer: 325 VIN: 1102408702 Engine: 1776cc Flat 4 Transmission: Manual Paint: Metallic Black Interior: Tan Leather

Up for auction with no reserve is my factory built Vintage Speedsters 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster replica with 325 actual miles since completion. Vintage Speedsters has been building one of the highest quality, best detailed Speedsters on the market and this one is heavily factory optioned with an extensive list of upgrades:

Metallic black paint upgrade ($400)
Tan leather interior upgrade ($800)
Trunk carpet upgrade ($150)
Tan coco mat upgrade ($100)
Tan vinyl tonneau upgrade ($200)
1776 Engine upgrade ($900)
Dual carburetor upgrade ($350)
Special exhaust upgrade ($350)
3:88 Transmission upgrade ($350)
Front disc brake upgrade ($350)

In addition to the factory installed upgrades, this Speedster has a Memphis Audio hi-fi sound system and Viper alarm cleanly integrated into the interior. The sound system includes an Alpine AM/FM/CD/MP3 (Bluetooth capable) receiver feeding two Memphis amplifiers on a custom rack mounted under the hood and wrapped in matching tan square-weave carpet. The first amp runs 2 Memphis mids mounted in custom pods below the dash. The second amp runs 2 10-inch Memphis subwoofers in an indiscrete enclosure behind the seats. Very clean and clear sound, even at 70 MPH on the freeway with the top down.

Vintage Speedsters uses a custom built, jig welded, 2x4 inch 11-gauge steel frame. An original 1970 VW pan was restored, shortened and welded to the new steel skeleton at the Vintage Speedsters factory. The rigid new structure retains the original VW pan designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche and integrates the largest frame possible. All of the Vintage Speedster cars easily pass the jack test meaning that they are not going to twist when jacked up under one corner . In addition, the steering wheel is offset slightly, just as an original Porsche Speedster.

With the upgraded 1776cc engine, 3:88 transmission and disc brakes this Speedster drives out incredible. I have a garage full of vintage VWs and this one is by far my favorite to drive. The car has good power, sounds great, tracks perfectly and stops on a dime.

As I drove the car out to shoot the pictures, I really started doubting my thoughts of selling it. This was always my must have "bucket list" car, but I have a mid-restoration 1956 Lowlight Karmann Ghia that is way overdue to get back on the road. There is no way that my Ghia is going to be on the road this summer without the proceeds of the Speedster, so here it is. Ready for the proud new owner. If you havent owned a Speedster you are in for a huge treat. There is nothing else in this price range that is such a blast to drive and turns heads everywhere.

I purchased the Speedster from the original owner who had an interesting history with the car. He had custom ordered the car directly from Kirk Duncan of Vintage Speedsters in 2002. When the car was completed in July 2003 he had it shipped directly to Gervais Engines for a fuel injected turbo motor. On his first significant drive, the turbo motor failed and the car was transported back to his home. With less than 100 miles on the odometer, the speedster was covered up and tucked away in a carport where it sat relatively untouched for the next 10 years.

After 10 years under a cover this Speedster became a prime example of why to spend a little more on a high quality, breathable car cover. The owner covered the car up with a cheap cover that trapped in moisture and the solvents from the factory fresh paint job. This caused small 2-5mm blisters to form in the paint from end to end. The majority of the paint blistering is on the rear half of the car, but its prominent throughout. Please look through the detailed close-up photos towards the bottom of the page. These photos capture the blisters very well. Before I purchased the car, I wanted to make sure that the blisters were in the paint and not deeper under the surface so we lifted the paint from a small area on the deck lid. We did verify that indeed the blemishes are in the paint. The gel coat and fiberglass looked great below the paint. Please note that this is about a one square inch area that is covered up by the Pegasus decal on the deck lid. My original intention with the car was to have it repainted. The body and gaps are great on the car so it would be a simple prep and respray, but as odd as it sounds the paint imperfections really grew on me. That little touch of patina gives the car a feeling of being a real survivor steel body Speedster.

When the previous owner decided to sell the car he had Park Place LTD pull the defective turbo motor and reinstall the 1776cc motor that Vintage Speedsters had originally built the car with. This motor runs flawless and sounds great with the upgraded hidden exhaust.

As to be expected with such a low mileage car, this Speedster is turn key ready to go enjoy. There is a few simple nitpicky items on my to-do list that I never got around to, so Im going to pass them on to the new owner. The left front exterior trim strip and Speedster emblem could be replaced. The radio could use a hidden antenna if you want AM/FM. The tachometer isnt reading and the wiper switch needs to be replaced. I always had my iPod plugged in, shifted by sound and never drove it in the rain so these items never made top priority. I just dont want anything but good surprises for the new owner.

Theres a few items worth mentioning that didnt make the photos but are included with the Speedster. The tan coco floor mats, Sparco seat belt harnesses and the matching tan leather rear seat base. The seat base will sit on top of the subwoofer enclosure but is rather useless. The US Forces license plate belongs to my Ghia and does not go with the Speedster. It comes with a Washington state collector vehicle license plate if you are a Washington state resident. The speedster is titled as a 1970 Volkswagen so it can be registered as an emissions exempt classic in most states. I have the title in my name and posession with no brands or liens.
