1970 Chrysler Imperial Coup

1970 Chrysler Imperial Coup

The 1970 Imperial was the second year for the fuselage styling. The initial introduction of these cars created quite a stir. The styling matched the overall theme of the car which was a large, better handling, less ostentatious American luxury car. The two doors were just massive in their dimensions from the fenders back. They create an incredible presence and if you read my auction on my 1971 Imperial, you will know that people walked right by my Hemi Cuda to stare at this gorgeous, gigantic, Imperial. Only 1,803 of these cars were built in 1970 and this one is a prime candidate for an easy (no rust) restoration.

This car is what I usually start with - clean, California car, needing a lot, but with a great foundation. I will drive it, fix the items that it takes to enjoy the car AS IS, and thoroughly get to know the car. Then, I will tear the car down completely, taken care of not only what is to be restored, but fixing as many as the factory defects as I possibly can. What you see in the pictures is an original paint, California Imperial Coup from 1970. It has its original interior, trunk lining, and engine. What I have done to the car so far is to make the engine perform faultlessly with a replacement of a carburetor and installing of an electronic ignition. Repaired the brakes, and installed a high torque starter, replaced shock absorbers. If any of you saw my 1971 Sun Roof coup that sold for $24,500.00 on eBay, that is the car that I bought that stopped this project. The original paint will buff out but still needs repainted. I haven’t touched it yet with wax or buffer – that is the original from Chrysler paint on stripe that you see remnants of. However, the dent on the right front fender is not going to buff out. I had my body man look at it and it can be repaired without replacement. It is deep and long. Kinda like when the Titanic rubbed up against the iceberg.

This is a good, honest project, and from the photographs you can see there is no rust in the trunk and from my inspection, there is no rust in the floors anywhere. All the moldings are on the car, it will need to be chromed, and the interior which is there is completely drivable but needs to be replaced especially the left seat. Door trim panels and quarter trim panels are beautiful. Glass is good, original, and needs no replacement. Door weather strips can be reused but trunk weather strip needs replaced. The LeBaron interior enclosure around the rear window needs what I have had to do to all of my other LeBaron’s which is to pull down the fiberglass, reinforce it with a piece of aluminum (glue) and re-apply. Three of the four hub caps are dented (not bad) but are easily restorable. All the switches work but when I pulled this car out of storage, the right front window quit working. I can hear the motor spin but it doesn’t move so we have lost the transmission in the motor assembly (easily repairable).

Ultimately, this car will need a complete interior but if you fix the driver’s seat, it will be fine for driving right now. Make no mistake, this car needs a restoration, but it’s not rust, it’s not an engine, it’s simply paint, interior, weather strips and chrome – or drive it like it like it is and enjoy an extremely fast, highly styled, rare, Imperial Coup.
