When you're looking for the ultimate combination of luxury and power in a pickup, your search will begin and end with the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. It has set the standard in the truck world and this '06 model 3LT so it's the top of the line package with every possible option. It's a 4x4 with the Z82 off road package as well as the Z85 towing package. Best of all, it runs perfect and has NO BLOWBY. EVERYTHING WORKS. It even has a nice set of Toyo 265-series tires that let it sit up like a proper 4x4 truck should but don't worry with chrome nerf bars it's still easy to get in & out.

Power is from the legendary 6.6 Duramax diesel engine that runs perfect. It starts right up hot or cold with no rough running or smoking. It's so quiet you would mistake it for a gas engine yet it delivers so much power that you can pull anything you've got to the nerve to hook to it. The 6-speed Allison automatic put it all to the ground plus features a towing mode as well as a manual shift mode so you can shift up or down with a push of the button. Some of the other features include spray-in bedliner, outside heated power-adjustable mirrors with integrated turn signals, heated leather memory seats, and more. There isn't much else you could order that isn't included on this truck!

Don't let the 245k worry you, this Duramax is barely broken-in! We've put nearly 1000 miles on it just driving it daily, moving some campers around, etc. and can find absolutely no problems. It was just traded-in by the at a local franchise dealer on a new one. It belonged to one of the managers of a large contracting company. They pulled it all over the country from jobsite to jobsite. We wouldn't be surprised if half the miles on this truck were just from being pulled around plus we wouldn't hesitate to get in and drive this truck ANYWHERE. There are no rips or tears in the seats nor are there any smoke or pet odors. This truck has clearly spent its life on the highway. 2006 GM Duramax Heavy Duty Trucks

General Motors isn’t waiting until its next-generation fullsize pickup comes out to offer a significantly improved Duramax 6600 diesel engine. Redesigned and re-engineered Chevy and GMC fullsize pickups aren’t expected to hit the dealerships for at least another year as 2007 models. But GM is giving the current generation truck a majestic going-away party as the heavy-duty models now get the most powerful diesel engine available to pickup consumers.

The new 6.6-liter Duramax V8 is rated at 360 horsepower at 3200 rpm with an impressive peak torque of 650 lb-ft at 1600 rpm. That beats the Ford Power Stroke, which is rated at 325 horsepower and 570 lb-ft, and the Dodge Cummins, which is rated at 325 horsepower and 610 lb-ft. For now, Chevy and GMC own the bragging rights as king of the torque mountain.

But wait, there’s more.

Backing up the increased power is a new Allison 6-speed automatic transmission. With an additional overdrive gear, engine speed is reduced by 250 rpm at 60 mph to help with fuel economy and range. This new tranny also offers such innovative features as tap shifting for easier manual control of the gears and a low-traction mode to help limit tire slip on wet or icy road surfaces.

Making this power combo even more impressive is a long list of refinements that have smoothed out and quieted down vehicle operation. But those perks may get lost in the rush of acceleration and pulling power now available in Silverado and Sierra 2500/3500 pickups.

I spent an afternoon driving a variety of heavy-duty models, some with trailers, up hills and over a closed road course at the GM Proving Grounds near Milford, Michigan. My first impressions are without criticism at this point. Driving an empty 2500 Extended Cab is like piloting a sport truck. Stab the throttle at 60 mph and in a short distance you’re pegging the speed control at 96 mph (limited not by engine power but by the engine-management computer saying that’s too fast for the tires). Towing 10,000 pounds, I had no problem reaching Interstate speed or accelerating from 40 to 70 mph in a passing exercise. I also towed up a 7.2-percent grade with ease. GM officials set up acceleration contests with comparable models from Dodge and Ford. I’ve been to at least 10 vehicle introductions where similar drag races are held, and host manufacturer has never lost.

The GM trucks were easy winners on flat roads and up the hill, but that’s not the main point that needs to be stressed. Maximum GCWR of the Big 3 heavy-duty trucks are similar so that most towing consumers are going to get enough truck to do the job within those ratings. (Ford, 26,000 lbs.; Dodge, 23,000; GM, 23,500 lbs. But remember, ratings vary between vehicle configurations and maximum tow capacities change due to axle ratios, vehicle trim levels, type of hitch and transmission choice.) The bigger selling points that need to be considered are vehicle comfort, drivability, reliability, utility and the capability of outfitting your truck to suit your needs.

The Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab with the Cummins diesel engine can accelerate briskly without a load. But the overall experience appeared more pleasant in the GM truck during this comparison because of the engine and transmission refinement. Gear shifts are more precise and harmonious with the engine speed and torque. I had no way of actually measuring noise levels, but the Silverado felt quieter, especially over the Super Duty. And it’s not just dB levels. There are quality levels to noise. Some frequencies are just more irritating than others. Dodge has made significant improvements in its 2006 cab to isolate road noise, and the F-150 is among the quietest trucks on the road. It's going to come down to the details and personal preferences as pickups become more SUV-like in their ride and comfort.

The new Duramax achieved its higher power ratings mainly through an upgrade in the fuel system and a new engine control unit (ECU). The Bosch common-rail fuel system now offers 26,000 psi, up from the previous maximum of 24,000 psi. New 7-hole injectors allow up to five separate pulses or events per combustion cycle, up from three events in the previous Duramax.

“This gives us the ability to tailor the combustion pressure characteristics to reduce the noise and emissions in the cylinder,” explains Charles Freese, executive director of diesel engineering at GM Powertrain.

The new ECU is based on a Bosch 32-bit controller that is much more precise than the previous Delphi unit in controlling the fuel system. Other improvements to the new Duramax include:

  • Increased thickness (by 4mm) in firing deck of the aluminum cylinder head
  • Stronger materials used in cylinder block
  • Lower bearing and skirt areas of cylinder block strengthened
  • Upgraded main bearings
  • Piston bore diameter increased
  • Stronger connecting rods
  • Aerodynamics of turbocharger revised for quicker response
  • Air induction system re-tuned for quieter operation

GM Powertrain also lowered the compression ratio from 17.5:1 to 16.8:1 with redesigned pistons. The lower compression helps with emissions and reduces stress on the engine with a lower peak cylinder firing pressure, which in turn allows more turbo boost and more fuel to be burned. Lowering the compression ratio can also mean trouble for cold-weather starts. So GM directed the fuel spray directly over improved glow plugs that heat up faster and also introduced a 1000-watt grid heater in the air intake.

On the transmission side, the added gear is for highway cruising. First through Fifth gear ratios are carried over from the previous Allison while the Sixth gear is 0.61:1. At 60 mph, Fifth gear (0.71:1) engine speed is 1800 rpm while the new Sixth gear is 1550 rpm. Tow-haul is carried over but now it’s complemented by a tap-shift option. Drivers can pull the main shifter down to M and then control gear selection manually using a thumb-activated toggle on the shift lever. The range selection holds the gear of choice but there are electronic safeguards to keep the engine from over revving. Grade braking and cruise grade braking are available only when the tow-haul mode is selected and the transmission is not in the range-selection mode. A new low-traction mode is now standard on all vehicles equipped with the Duramax. When the driver selects Second gear and wheel slip is detected, then the transmission torque-manages the engine to limit tire slip. The Allison also gets a new 32-bit controller, new solenoids for better torque converter lockup and shift feel and quieter oil pump.

What's New for 2006

For 2006, a diesel engine upgrade is the most significant change to the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. The Duramax 6.6-liter engine receives a host of power and refinement upgrades, as well as reduced emissions. Additionally, the Allison automatic transmission is now a six-speed, and features a tap-shift range selection mode. The only other noteworthy updates are a new design for the optional power camping/towing exterior mirrors and slightly updated front-end styling.

Introduction

Chevrolet's modern full-size pickup has been around in one form or another since the early '60s. Now into its sixth generation, the Silverado, as it's now called, boasts classic styling and some of the most powerful drivetrains available anywhere. A perennial competitor to the full-size offerings from Ford and Dodge, Chevrolet typically finishes a close second in sales, mostly due to the fact that it shares customers with the virtually identical GMC Sierra.

Often first to market with exclusive features, the Silverado 2500HD continues that tradition by offering XM Satellite Radio and Bose audio systems. Chevy trucks also offer the OnStar communications system that provides the convenience of 24-hour on-call assistance for everything from tow truck requests to dinner reservations. Combine this with attractive styling on the outside and thoughtful features on the inside, and the Silverado 2500HD presents a compelling package for anyone in the market for a no-holds-barred work truck.

Solid as the heavy-duty Silverado is, it's definitely worth your while to shop around in this segment, as Ford and Dodge both have strong diesel power plants that give their trucks higher tow ratings (properly equipped, a Silverado 2500HD can tow up to 12,000 pounds (16,000 with a fifth wheel). GM's truck is still a fine choice for use around the worksite and home, just make sure you assess your needs carefully before making a decision.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2500HD is available in regular, extended- and crew-cab body styles. From there, you can pick two- or four-wheel drive and a short or long box (except for regular cabs, which are long boxes only). There are five trim levels: Work Truck, LS, LT1, LT2 and LT3. Work Trucks offer manual dual-zone air conditioning, a 40/20/40-split bench seat and ABS. LS models come with a tilt steering wheel, cruise control, a CD stereo, an upgraded driver message center and tinted glass. The LT1 adds power windows and locks, and keyless entry. The LT2 includes a power driver seat and Bose audio. The LT3 includes leather seats and a CD changer.

Powertrains and Performance

The HD's base engine is a 6.0-liter V8 rated at 300 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet offers two even more powerful options: an 8.1-liter V8 and the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel. The 8.1-liter engine boasts an impressive 330 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, while the updated-for-'06 6.6-liter diesel V8 makes 360 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission for the 6.0-liter V8 is a five-speed manual with a heavy-duty four-speed automatic optional. The 8.1-liter V8 and 6.6-liter diesel can be hooked up to either a six-speed manual or a heavy-duty Allison six-speed automatic. Being heavy-duty trucks, these brutes can certainly pull: Trucks properly equipped and fitted with the 6.0-liter V8 can pull around 10,000 pounds; the 8.1L and Duramax V8s bump that figure to 12,000 pounds. Adding a fifth wheel for trailering gives a HD the ability to pull 16,000 pounds.

Safety

All heavy-duty Silverados include four-wheel antilock disc brakes as standard equipment. In frontal crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Silverado earned a three-star rating (out of five) for driver protection and four stars for the front passenger. In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's frontal offset crash test, the Silverado was given an overall rating of "Marginal," the second lowest score.

Interior Design and Special Features

Inside, Silverado buyers will find a logically laid-out interior, with an easy-to-use climate control system and clear, uncluttered gauges. Materials quality is unimpressive, and build quality, though improved over the last few years, is still behind the competition. The large cabin offers plenty of room, comfortable bucket seats and a four-door configuration on extended-cab models.

Driving Impressions

The 2500HD is a reasonably comfortable truck for everyday use, but don't expect the plush ride of its light-duty siblings. Any of the three available engines provides swift acceleration and ample towing power, but the diesel V8 is probably the best choice for those who tow heavy loads.

This covers our costs for a notary, Fedex charges, and other paperwork. Lousiana, Canadian and other foreign buyers must pay a $149 Documentation Fee to cover the extra Fedex and other expenses associated with doing international (and Cajun) paperwork. We do have Mississippi temporary tags available if you desire one for an additional $50. However, we've sent hundreds of vehicles all over the country without them & nobody has ever had an issue driving home.

We no longer will deliver vehicles after-hours or on weekends. Occasionally things pop up like a blown fuse or a headlight going out and after hours a mechanic isn't there to fix it.
