1980 MG, Excellent condition, Many Pics, No Reserve!

Up for sale is my 1980 MG Roadster.   The car is sporty, elegant and fun to drive.  Up for sale is a beautiful 1980 MGB Roadster that looks awesome and that runs and drives excellent.  The 1.8 liter inline 4-cylinder engine runs super smooth.  The 4-speed manual transmission shifts flawlessly through all gears.

The arctic white paint has a deep mirror like finish with very few imperfections.  The chrome trim shows nicely.  The convertible top is original and in good condition.  There is also the original parade boot cover for a cleaner look, and this is stored in the trunk.  The interior shows very nicely with very minimal wear.  There are no cracks in dash, and there is new black carpet in the car as well.

This MG Roadster is a lot of fun to drive and it gets great gas mileage (around 35 miles per gallon).  It's the perfect vehicle to drive around town, go shopping or just enjoy the open air.

Below there are 24 photos showing the highlights of the car.  I also provide below written description of these highlights and the current condition of the car.

HISTORY:

This is a car with two owners.   The original owner pampered the car in Annapolis, MD.  I have also pampered the car and driven it only during the summer months.  I have alot of the records and repair receipts for the vehicle.   The car is now fully titled, insured and registered in Virginia.

DOCUMENTATION:

The car comes complete with;

  • The factory original top boot cover,
  • The original full tonneau cover,
  • a full car cover.
  • Orignial jack and lug wrench.
  • Original Limited Edition Owners Manual
  • Two shop / repair manuals.

BODY AND PAINT:

In May 2000, the car was professionally painted for $3200.  The car was painted with the original white paint that came from the MG Factory in England, some 34 years ago.

Overall the body is very straight and there is no record that the car was ever in an accident.  The paint itself is very good overall with a nice luster.  With a professional machine buffing, the car will look even better.  From 5 to 10 feet away, the car still looks awesome.  Factory MG racing stripes have been installed and above the rocker panels on both sides.

Underneath the car and undercarriage are in good shape and all wheel openings and door seams are without rust.  The rest of the body and undercarriage, floor boards, frame rails, etc., also appear to have escaped the ravages of time, in no doubt due to the warm garage the car sat in during the winter months.

INTERIOR/TOP:

Like the body and paint, the interior is very nice for it's age. Seat upholstery is original and tear-free.  Door panels are in excellent shape.  Carpet is brand new.  All of the gauges work, even the quartz clock, which is pretty amazing despite the British Lucas reputation.  Windshield is the original Triplex.  There is an aftermarket Pioneer stereo in the dash to improve the sound system.

The top is original vinyl and it looks great, but the rear see-through urethane has yellowed slightly and could be replaced.  The top can be put down or the tonneau tops in the trunk can be used, for a sleeker profile when the car is in the driveway.

DRIVETRAIN/ENGINE:

The car has 131,758 original miles on it, and it gets approximately 36 miles per gallon.  The car accelerates smartly and shifts smoothly.

Under the hood is also completely original and unmolested.  It still maintains all the original equipment and original shielding. The engine is clean and has no leaks.  It was just serviced which included a tune-up, new radiator hoses, heat sensors, and coolant flush.  Runs very cool, great oil pressure, no unusual noises, no smoke, no leaks, runs and drives great.  Overdrive works perfectly.

DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:

The car rides on it's original Limited Edition alloy wheels with newer radial tires.  The wheels show well but do have minor imperfections under close inspection, but again, still look great, as seen in the pictures.

Overall, the car rides and handles very well.  It is a real pleasure to drive, and one can easily imagine driving stylishly through the English countryside in it. Suspension is tight and handling feels just as it should, no surprises.  The exhaust system is newer and it sounds like a classic British sports car.

EXPENDITURES:

During the entire time I have had the car, it has been serviced by MGB Mount Joy’s Classic Sportscars in Hyattsville, MD.  Mount Joy’s is Washington DC’s quintessential British car specialists.

What does the car need?

Not much of anything really.  The car will easily pass inspection.  The left front blinker light lens is in the glove compartment.  The rear chrome luggage rack is in the trunk and that can easily be re-installed to the rear trunk lid.  Seats need to be fully bolted down on new carpet.  Car is complete with good spare tire, jack stand and two sets of tonneau covers.

SUMMARY:

Otherwise, the car can be driven cross-country right now.  With proper maintenance, it will give you years of enjoyment.  Is the car perfect?  Of course not. If it was, it would easily be around $20,000.  It's a 34 year old British classic that turns heads wherever it goes and attracts crowds and smiles from young and old alike.  Beyond that, it's really a question of where you want the car to be. You could drive it for years for just the sheer pleasure of driving a British classic sports car, or you could do a complete restoration for the concours, if you want.

This is NOT a $20K fully restored trailer queen.  It IS however a solid, great running and driving , unmolested, original example of an MGB.  One does not find many original unmolested cars like this anymore.
