1953 MG TD

Up for sale is a 1953 MG TD Roadster

Assembled in Abingdon, England, the MG TD is a manual transmission, rear-wheel drive roadster. It represents the state-of-the-art in engine, transmission and suspension design for british cars of the period.

Following in the footsteps of the TC, the TD has been substantially redesigned.  This version of the T-series Midgets has a completely new chassis design, much sturdier and stiffer than the TC. The car is also 5 inches wider giving it more stability. Coupled with a modified rear axle, a new independent suspension and the use of 15 inch pressed steel wheels rather than the old 19 inch spindle wheels, this MG was a much more comfortable ride than any of its predecessors.

All of these improvements did not however take away from its elegance. The traditional Edwardian roadster look born in the J-series was upheld with the use of the upright radiator, cutaway doors, flowing separate fender and the wooden dashboard and rear mounted spare wheel. For the first time, an MG was equipped with bumpers in the front and rear which gave the TD a more ‘civilized’ look.

This little British sports roadster was a favoured ‘club racer’ like its older cousin the TC. Nearly 30,000 MG TDs have been produced during its 4 year production run. Over 23,000 of these were exported to North America. The MG TD was the most popular sporting MG at the time outpacing TC production 3 to 1.

This specific TD has been owned by a single owner for thirty years. It was cared for and stored in a climate controlled area. This MG is solid and rust-free. It was very well maintained over the years. The chassis and floors are in great shape. The convertible top is complete and undamaged. The 4 speed manual gearbox and clutch operate smoothly. The car runs and drives very nicely. The car does not have its original motor, it has been professionally modified to include a more modern and reliable MGB 1.8 Liter engine. Both the current engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt. This is a fine example of the sports roadster, a real head turner and a great investment.
