Up for sale is a Silver 1989 Volvo 245DL with blue leatherette interior. This survivor has 149,014 miles showing on the working odometer. This vehicle came to my Volvo repair shop in need of some TLC that the former owner was unable to provide. The poor little car was on its way to the great beyond. Being a volvo technician for the past 30 years, I could see beyond the maintenance needed and offered to purchase the vehicle. The owner and I reached a number and the work began to bring this Swedish jewel back to its former self. The car has been garage kept for most of its life, hence the immaculate paint and no rust to be found. My staff and I started with a bath and went on from there. We did all work necessary to make it reliable and safe just as Volvo did. We replaced any suspect brake component, including front brake pads, rotors, calipers and brake hoses. Rear brake pads, rotos and calipers. Brake master cylinder and junction block. We did a complete tune up including valve adjustment, Spark plugs, distributer cap, rotor, ignition wires, PCV valve, air filter, throttle plate service and adjustment. We replaced the timing belt, tensioner bearing and front engine seals. The radiator, water pump, thermostate and coolant flush were done for good measure. Before buttoning up the front we installed new drive belts. The rear tail lenses have been replaced and the tailgate got new wiring harnesses. The suspension bushings are in good shape with plenty of miles left, the rear shock absorbers are recent. The air conditioning is in excellent working order and blowing nice and cold. The paint is original and shinny, this car has never been in an accedent, the interior is in fantastic shape with no tears in the seats or carpet. This is an extremely stand up 245 ready to give many many more miles of driving pleasure and should need nothing to be a reliable car for its new owner. Please see list for a complete list of all repairs and maintenance done.

Volvo XC90 First Edition sells out in 47 hours
Fri, 05 Sep 2014Two days ago, Volvo opened the order books on its completely new 2015 XC90 crossover, and just like that, all of the 1,927 First Edition models were reserved in a scant 47 hours. According to Volvo, most of the vehicles were reserved within one hour of the online ordering site launching, and at its peak, seven cars were being sold each minute.
First Edition models wear a unique Onyx Black exterior, and ride on eight-spoke, 21-inch wheels. Inside, amber nappa leather covers the seats, the dashboard is lined in charcoal leather, and there are walnut inlays throughout the cabin.
Under the hood, the XC90 First Edition can be had with either a four-cylinder Drive-E gasoline or diesel engine (if you live in markets outside the US, of course). The twin-charged T6 petrol model comes with 320 horsepower, and sends its power to the ground via all-wheel drive.
Top torque-to-weight ratios under $100k, $50k and $25k
Tue, 07 Oct 2014Horsepower may steal a lot of headlines, but the always-more-complex torque figure is often a critical one for both the workingman and the motoring playboy. The measure of rotational force represents the twist that can liquefy one's tires or haul one's horse trailer. Good stuff.
It follows then, that as with the horsepower-to-weight list that we assembled for you a few months ago, a list of cars that offer the most pound-feet with the fewest pounds to carry, is an interesting one to break down. Sure, there's a big difference in how the torque is applied from a turbocharged six-cylinder in a Swedish luxury sedan and a massive heavy-duty truck's turbo-diesel. But being the car/stat geeks that we are, we think it's kinda neat that those two vehicles rank near each other where torque and weight intersect.
As with the horsepower list, we've given you figures as pounds per every one pound-foot. Again broken down into broad price categories, we've got a mixed bag of 2014 and 2015 models here, too. Every effort has been made to select the most up-to-date prices and specs, and we've also to omitted some '14 cars that won't be re-upped after the ongoing yearly changeover.
Volvos will brake for bicyclists with new detection technology
Thu, 07 Mar 2013Anyone who pedals a bicycle knows that one of the biggest dangers to riders is a motorized vehicle - Volvo estimates that nearly 50 percent of all cyclists killed in European traffic have collided with a car. In the United States alone, 618 riders lost their lives in bicycle/motor vehicle crashes in 2010, and the number of injuries surpassed 52,000.
To help drop those numbers, Volvo has just announced Cyclist Detection with full auto brake - a technology that detects and automatically applies a vehicle's brakes when a cyclist swerves in front of a moving car. The basic components of the system include a radar unit integrated into the front grille, a camera fitted in front of the interior rear-view mirror and a central control unit. The radar is tasked with seeing obstacles in front of the vehicle and calculating distance, while the camera is responsible to determine what the object is. The central control unit, with rapid processing capabilities, monitors and evaluates the situation.
The technology, which will be sold bundled with its Pedestrian Detection and called Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, will automatically apply full braking when both the radar and camera confirm a pedestrian or cyclist are in the immediate path of the vehicle. According to the automaker, the technology will be offered on the Volvo V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80 models from mid-May in 2013.
