1983 Volvo 240 Diesel - Very Rare - Restoration Project - 244, 245, 300td, 240d on 2040-cars

I was transferred on my job, and had to give up my shop...so I'm going to sell my diesel 240. It's been stored and worked on inside until recently.

This is a rare Volvo 240 with an original diesel engine. It's had a lot of work completed on it, and a lot of money spent doing it right.

The body's in great condition, and just needs to be prep'd and painted. The interior is in really great shape also, but I was going to do a complete interior change out, and at the same time install a cutting edge stereo system, and speakers. I was going to also install a turbo to give the car that extra zip. Even though the tires still have some life left on them, I was going to put some new tires on it also.

I restored one of these 240 (non-diesel) and drove it for over 5 years without any problems at all...just gas, oil, and tires...(sold it before transferring). I'm actually on the opposite side of the country now, and driving a Volvo 240. I buy these cars because they have a great, solid, safe, ride...and when driving these cars you sit up off the floor, unlike a lot of cars that has the driver almost level with the floor.... and the safety records of these cars is legendary.

Please don't get me wrong. I own a SUV & a truck...but when I drive to work, grocery store, flea market, etc...I drive my trusty Volvo. And, I should point out that if I'm going somewhere that I need to leave something of value in the car, or park it for extended periods.., Christmas shopping, Cloth Shopping, etc., or parked at the Airport for extended time, the Volvo 240 is a must. In the 25 years I've owned one of these cars, not once has anyone broke into one, or damaged one in any way.

My 240 is also my loaner car for my daughters, nephews, etc...when they visit.  In other words, if you start out by making one of these cars really nice, and keeping it that way...there isn't a better car to have as a budget primary or backup car (IMO)....and there really is a reason these were one of the top mother cars ever made. There's a lot of room in these cars, and extremely easy in & out.  And speaking of a top picks, these cars (Volvo 240) were voted one of the top 10 best cars ever made...and I strongly agree with that!!!

As to the diesel engine that Volvo put in these cars:  Some don't like them, and some love them...

- There are 2 main reason why someone would not like these engines: 1) Because they are the ones that have to work on them.  2)  The owner/driver doesn't do the easy/basic maintenance on it, and has problems with it....( then it's back to (1) the person that has to work on it, and in most cases because the basic maintenance isn't done by the owner/driver).

- Those that really like them:  They get really good fuel mileage, they are cheap to maintain (no plugs, plug wires, etc..), and they will last for hundreds of thousands of miles without any major work.

Ok, so the work that's been done to get this 240 ready for it's owner to cruise for several hundreds of thousands of miles without issues:

  • The head was removed, clean, tested for cracks, valves put in- then pressure tested.
  • New glow plugs installed.
  • Rebuilt injectors installed.
  • New head bolts.
  • New timing belt.
  • New fuel pump belt.
  • New water pump.
  • New fuel return lines.
  • Radiator was tank cleaned, pressure tested, painted and re-installed.
  • New battery
  • New struts
  • New shocks
  • New wheel bearings
  • Rebuilt break calipers
  • New brake rotors (all)
  • New brake shoes (all)
  • New master cylinder (brakes)
  • New drive shaft carrier bearings
  • New U-joints
  • Newer exhaust and muffler was already on the car when I got it.

  * Of course there's a lot of the smaller mechanical support items that I haven't listed...but they were rebuilt or replaced. Center caps for the rims are in the car.

Sorry, but I don't have better pictures. As I said, I'm on the opposite coast from the car.

The car is located in Blue Lake California, and will come with a clear Oregon title.

Volvo unveils all-new user interface destined for next-gen XC90 [w/video]

Thu, 27 Feb 2014

Take a close look at the cabin of the Volvo Concept Estate shown above. One of the big features on the fancy, brown shooting brake is an all-new user interface called, well, it doesn't really have a name, at least not one Volvo is revealing.
The refreshingly nameless system looks seriously impressive based on the short video that accompany's the system's press release. The jewel of the whole interface is a sizable touchscreen that manages most every in-car function save for a few vital functions like volume, hazard lights and other systems that still demand a more tactile interface.
"The basic idea is to organize controls and information in a perfectly intuitive and user- friendly way. Everything is exactly where you expect it to be, making the drive more enjoyable, efficient, and safe," Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo's Senior Vice President of Design, said in a statement.

IIHS says these are the safest cars of 2013

Wed, 02 Jan 2013

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed its annual list of Top Safety Picks, an award that highlights automobiles it says offer "superior crash protection." A new and still more significant award, the Top Safety Pick+ honor, is given to those vehicles that earn good ratings for occupant protection in four out of five areas of measure. And while some 117 vehicles were given the TSP seal of approval for 2013, just 13 passed muster for TSP+.
To be fair, IIHS only evaluated 29 vehicles with its new testing procedures for TSP+ (we'd expect that the number of qualified cars will rise substantially for 2014). Luxury and Near Luxury midsize cars were the first groups evaluated, followed by midsizers in the Moderately Priced Cars category - unsurprisingly, it's only midsize cars that you'll find among the class this year.
Only two luxury sedans made the list of 13 for 2013: the Acura TL and Volvo S60. The other 11 cars on the list included entries from domestic, Japanese and German car makers: Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord (sedan and coupe), Kia Optima (but not its close kin, the Hyundai Sonata, strangely), Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Suzuki Kizashi and the Volkswagen Passat all made the grade.

Volvo offers up more details on 2015 XC90 and its new infotainment system

Tue, 03 Jun 2014

We have more details on the 2015 Volvo XC90 and the all-new, touch-heavy infotainment system that will debut with it. An expansion of the Sensus system, as we've shown you before, we now know the new system won't only sport a large, vertically oriented touchscreen, but a head-up display and the ability to manage the systems via wheel-mounted buttons.
Key to the entire experience are the large, portrait-oriented touchscreen, a head-up display and the thumb controls you can see on the face of the steering wheel in the image above. Volvo is claiming that this combination will be easier to use and, fittingly for the Swedish manufacturer, safer.
"Using the screen is so logical that it will become part of your muscle memory very quickly," said Dr. Peter Mertens, Volvo's senior vice president of research and development. "Information, navigation and media are high up and easy to check. The phone controls, application icons and climate controls are located low, comfortable to reach and touch. All of this logic is based on extensive usability and user experience research and the latest technology."
