1974 VW Volkswagen Thing Type 181 Convertible – Rebuilt Engine

This 1974 Thing has been a joy of ours for several years. But we don't get the time to run around in it like we used to and hope somebody else can enjoy it and give it a good home.

  • Rebuilt engine with less than 100 miles on it. We haven't started it for two years or so and it currently does not start – probably the starter/solenoid. But once you get it running, the engine should be in good shape. The engine costs us approx. $3000 for purchase and installation.
  • Floor pans were replaced with aluminum plate by the previous owner to cover up floor pan rust.
  • The body has rust spots, primarily on the fenders (a few pictures of examples are shown).
  • Convertible top generally in decent shape, although it pulls up slightly on the front passenger side above the frame and has a small patch about the passenger area (both are evident in the photo showing the front of the roof).
  • Interior seats are in good shape with no tears but they are only partially mounted to the aluminum plate floor board. Includes standard VW seat rails (extra, never installed).
  • The pins of the passenger-side rear door need replacing along with the side mirrors. The other door handles/latches are tight and need lubricant/work.
  • Front windshield is cracked.
  • Side windows are in good condition (side curtains as they are called in VW Thing lingo).
  • No actual mileage because the odometer was removed before we bought it.
  • Comes with a printed owners manual.
  • Includes a replacement front end (extra, never installed), a spare wheel (no tire), and a replacement emergency brake (never installed - the emergency brake had been removed before we bought it).

If you are willing to put some work and TLC into this car, it will be the perfect beach car or run-around car. We will miss it. But want it to get the use and enjoyment that it deserves.

North American production of foreign marques to jump in 2014

Sun, 23 Dec 2012

Wards Auto has released its North American Light Vehicle Production Forecast for 2014, and the report predicts foreign manufacturers will increase production on the continent some 3.9 percent by 2014. If accurate, that should see 123,000 additional cars, trucks and vans produced in North America, swelling the total number of units produced both by domestic and foreign manufacturers to 16.9 million light vehicles from a projected 15.6 million in 2013. Much of the increase can be attributed to the fact that Toyota intends to produce another car at its Blue Springs, MS plant as well as a new Lexus model at its Georgetown, KY facility in a year's time.
Likewise, Volkswagen intends to move production of a currently imported model to its plant in Puebla, Mexico. Daimler, Honda, Nissan and Mazda also plan to build additional models on North American soil for the first time. Around two-thirds of the new North American manufacturing will take place in Mexico, helping the country soak up a full 20 percent of the content's automotive production for the first time. You can head over to the Wards Auto site for the full report.

Autoblog Podcast #327:

VW exec calls US ops a 'disaster'

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

Today in the Tell Us How You Really Feel file we have Bernd Osterloh, head of Volkswagen AG's Group Works Councils and member of the company's supervisory board, labeling the company's US operations "a disaster." Why? Because Osterloh believes VW of America doesn't have the models it needs to be competitive here, hasn't been decisive enough about its plans and German higher-ups still don't understand the US market.
In truth, the top labor rep at the German conglomerate is echoing sentiments we've heard from VWoA executives for years, and there's been the same commentary from dealers: Germany doesn't pay enough attention to what the US market really wants. Even ex-VWoA CEO Stefan Jacoby, who preceded the recently departed Jonathan Browning, said early in his tenure that one of his tasks was to get his German bosses to start delivering what the US market demanded. New CEO Michael Horn is saying much the same thing seven years later, telling Sky News that it has to increase "the speed at which we bring new models to the market and innovation to the market."
Osterloh wants to get "more models" here, including a pickup truck, but we'd wonder if the economics have changed from when Jacoby said they'd need to sell 100,000 per year to make money. Osterloh also wants a decision on where the CrossBlue will be built. Although it looked as if the Chatanooga, TN plant would get the call, the Puebla, Mexico plant is still in the running because of lower operating costs. No matter what happens right now, Osterloh thinks the situation won't get better for another two years when revamped models arrive, but at least the company can start taking the steps for a better US future.
